Maha restricts deletion of cemetery from urban DP
Mumbai: The state govt has issued directions under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) Act to all urban local bodies not to delete reservations for cemeteries/burial grounds from their development plans (DP). Any change of reservation of a plot reserved for cemeteries/burial grounds or deletion of such a reservation will now require cabinet approval.
Maharashtra has 29 municipal corporations, 232 municipal councils, and 125 Nagar Panchayats. In an order issued early this month, the state
urban development
department (UDD) observed that several urban local bodies have issued notices under section 37(1) of the MRTP for modification of their DP to delete reservations for cemeteries/burial grounds. Section 37(1) empowers the Planning Authority to modify a final DP, but only if the changes do not alter the plan's overall character. Also, these proposals are being submitted to the govt for its approval.
A senior govt official said the deletion of reservation for cremation/burial grounds is being increasingly sought from smaller municipal corporations and councils. "Often, these reservations are put on plots owned by private persons. Many do not want this reservation. We received proposals seeking change of use to Green Zone, Sewage Treatment Plant, and also deletion," said the official. The order states that as population in areas of urban local bodies is continuously increasing, reservation of graveyards/burial grounds is made in the development plan. "Exclusion of such reservations from DP deprives local citizens of the facility, hurts the religious sentiments of citizens, and creates law and order issues."
The order further states that in public interest, the govt has issued a directive under section 154 of the
MRTP Act
to prevent encroachment on existing graveyards and burial grounds, not to regularise encroachment no matter how old it is, and no change to be made to reservation.

Advocate Gayatri Singh said a particular process is followed by local bodies before reservations are placed in a DP and a similar procedure is to be followed to delete/change a reservation. "By issuing such a directive, state govt is taking away the rights of local bodies and is opening doors for change/deletion of other reservations. It is completely illegal," she said.

Inside Canada's biggest defence shift in decades: New spending, NATO's 5 percent pledge, and Arctic priorities
Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil sweeping new defence-spending plans this Monday,(June 9) sources close to the government tell The Globe, as Canada prepares for the NATO Leaders' Summit on June 24–25. Two senior officials said the package will include significant increases in military funding, positioning Canada to embrace a proposed alliance-wide target of 5 per cent of GDP, nearly triple the current minimum of 2 per cent. Defence ministers, meeting in Brussels on June 5, paved the way. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte publicly voiced confidence that leaders will back the bold new goal of 3.5 per cent for core military capabilities, plus 1.5 per cent for infrastructure initiatives to boost mobility. For Canada, which spent just 1.3 per cent of GDP in 2023 on defence, well below the existing 2 per cent target, the implications are striking. Among the bold initiatives being considered: a roughly US $4 billion investment in over‑the‑horizon radar for the Indo-Pacific and Arctic, and expanded military infrastructure in the North. Live Events Human stories behind the numbers Soldiers in yellow-purple Arctic parkas say the boost can't come soon enough. 'We're stretched thin,' says a reservist stationed in Yellowknife on the edge of the changing Arctic. 'More hardware, more training—it all matters.' Lisette, whose husband is a second-line mechanic based in Trenton, Ont, worries about the real cost. 'We're proud, but I'll feel it when budget cuts hit health or school programs. They need to explain it to families like ours.' At headquarters in Ottawa, military planners are quietly recalculating deployment schedules, with a senior source noting new commitments could include rotating multinational units through Latvia and Romania. Why the surge The backdrop of this surge is grim and urgent: Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, strategic ties between Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, and concerns that US withdrawal looms. Secretary-General Rutte said the alliance must 'turbo-charge our defence production and defence spending.' Trump has also pressured Canada, offering a 'Golden Dome' missile shield free of charge if Canada agrees to be the 51st US state. Carney has dismissed those remarks, asserting Canadian sovereignty and pledging to tilt toward European cooperation What comes next Carney's office promises 'substantial new spending plans' on Monday, and on June 24–25, in The Hague, all eyes will be on whether Canada and other allies sign on to the 5 per cent pledge. This marks Canada's most significant defence pivot in decades, amid growing global threats. It's a challenge of national identity and fiscal balance, one that Carney must navigate with clarity, transparency, and empathy.

Viksit Bharat vision: Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel hails India's transformative journey of growth and heritage under PM Narendra Modi
In the 2014 general elections, the people of India entrusted Bharatiya Janata Party with an overwhelming mandate under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji. After being sworn in as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, he embarked on a transformative journey, placing the welfare of the people at the heart of governance and rolling out a series of inclusive, welfare-driven schemes. Over the years, these initiatives have since transformed the lives of the poor. Under his leadership, India continues to set new benchmarks in economic and social progress. On 26 May 2025, the Prime Minister marked 11 years of devoted service; a period defined by good governance and a benevolent commitment to uplifting the poor and vulnerable. As India's growth engine, Gujarat is advancing rapidly in industry, trade, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and tourism. The state stands poised to contribute meaningfully to the vision of 'Viksit Bharat@2047' envisioned by the Prime Minister. I remember, during his tenure as Chief Minister, he gave the mantra 'Desh Na Vikas Mate Gujarat No Vikas' (Gujarat's growth for the nation's growth). Today, that vision continues to strengthen Gujarat's resolve to play an even greater role in fulfilling the vision of a Viksit Bharat. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, countless opportunities are being created to help young people transform their dreams into reality. Recognizing the tremendous potential of its youth, Gujarat has launched impactful initiatives across education, industry, and employment, achieving remarkable progress. Guided by the Prime Minister's vision, the state has established sector-specific universities such as Gujarat Forensic Science University (GFSU), Raksha Shakti University (RSU), and the nation's first Railway University. In 2020, the Central Government granted national importance status to these institutions, now known as the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU). Additionally, Gujarat has opened 22 new medical colleges in the past 11 years, adding 4,300 medical seats to support aspiring students. We have prioritized the development of emerging industries to increase employment opportunities for the youth. To this effect, the government launched the Gujarat State Electronics Mission to attract investments in the semiconductor sector. Due to these efforts, several leading semiconductor companies have chosen Gujarat as their destination, positioning the state as India's emerging semiconductor hub. Heralding a new era of cultural renaissance in India Since 2014, under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, India has embraced a remarkable cultural revival. Simultaneously, timeless Indian traditions like Yog and Ayurved have earned global acclaim.
