WRD launches 38cr monsoon prep work across city, suburbs

Chennai: As the countdown to northeast monsoon begins, the water resources department (WRD) has taken up 38 crore worth of flood-prevention works across Chennai and neighbouring districts. From desilting major rivers to strengthening bunds and clearing encroachments near lakes, officials say efforts are on to complete all works by mid-Sept. The works include desilting major waterways such as Buckingham Canal, Cooum, and Adyar rivers. About 78 projects are underway in 15 zones, while 117 projects are being executed in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet districts. Senior officials, led by water resources secretary J Jayakanthan, inspected these sites to fast-track the progress and instructed officials to finish all the works by Sept 15. An official with the state disaster management department said WRD handed over three major macro drains to GCC for desilting. "In OMR, we asked TNRDC to coordinate with GCC and Metrowater to desilt the drain. Various drinking water utilities are obstructing desilting there. This will be completed by the end of Aug," said the official. They also kicked off sandbar removal in major estuaries at Muttukadu, Poonthottam, Cooum, Adyar, Ennore, and Pulicat to improve water flow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai At Kosasthalaiyar river, WRD is widening and strengthening the bunds near Vadaperumbakkam and Sayankuppam, which are prone to flooding every season, affecting 10,000 residents. Officials said the Puzhal surplus channels breach at this point and another point downstream where it meets the Kosasthalaiyar River. "Since the river carries both Poondi surplus simultaneously, it causes flooding. So, we are widening and increasing height of bunds by about three metres. It should reduce the impact." In suburban lakes at Radial Road and Chitlapakkam, WRD has focused on removing about 100 encroachments. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said they held a pre-monsoon meeting last week. "Next week, we are having a meeting headed by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. We will be asking officials to explain the progress in every constituency at that meeting. MLAs too have been instructed to go to the field and monitor status," he said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Flood alert issued across banks of Bhavani river in Erode

Erode: Water Resources Department (WRD) officials have issued a flood alert for people residing along the banks of the Bhavani river, as the water level in Erode's Bhavanisagar dam is expected to reach its maximum capacity today. As of 10am on Sunday, water level in the Bhavanisagar dam stood at 101.28ft. "Due to significant inflow into the dam, the water level is expected to rise to 102ft by Monday," said a WRD official. He added that surplus water from the dam would be discharged into the Bhavani river any moment. Hence, people residing along the riverbank and in low-lying areas have been urged to relocate to safer areas and undertake all necessary precautions to safeguard their property. Ganga, 5 other rivers in spate as rain lashes state

Patna: Incessant rainfall over the past 24 hours in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, including in the catchment areas of north Bihar rivers in Nepal, triggered a sudden surge in the Ganga on Sunday with the river flowing above the danger level from Buxar to Kahalgaon, except at Munger and Bhagalpur. Five other rivers were also reported to be above the danger mark at six locations. The situation along the Ganga was becoming increasingly concerning. On Sunday, the river was flowing 73cm above the danger level at Allahabad and 1.68 metres above at Varanasi. In Bihar, it was 8cm above the danger mark at Buxar. In Patna, the level at Digha was 7cm below the danger line, but at Gandhi Ghat, it was 51cm above the danger mark of 48.60 metres. It was also flowing 34cm above the red mark at Hathidah and 37cm above the threshold at Kahalgaon, according to the state water resources department (WRD) flood bulletin. The situation is likely to worsen from Monday. Among other rivers, the Kosi was also flowing above the danger level at two locations – Baltara (Khagaria) and Kursela (Katihar) – with water discharge at 1.76 lakh cusecs through the Birpur barrage on Sunday afternoon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Central Water Commission (CWC) projected further rise in the Ganga's level by 22 to 41cm by Monday morning. Twelve locations in Bihar recorded significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the CWC. These locations are Taiyabganj (Kishanganj, 152mm), Jhanjharpur (127mm), Mohammadganj (113mm), Birpur (100.6mm), Lalganj (Vaishali, 90.8mm), Gaya (90.2mm), Jainagar (90mm), Baltara (Khagaria, 84.4mm), Amour (86mm), Manjhi (69.8mm), Bachhara (Begusarai, 59.1mm) and Sripalpur (55.2 mm). Meanwhule, despite the flood threat, the widespread rainfall came as a relief to farmers, particularly those cultivating paddy. Rainfall between June 1 and July 30 had been 30% below normal, hampering agricultural activities. WRD principal secretary Santosh Kumar Mall had on Saturday asked all executive engineers to consult with farmers in their respective regions to understand their immediate problems and requirements. He also instructed that water from canal distributaries be made available to the tail ends for irrigation in command areas. Mall said, "The normal rainfall for the period from June 1 to July 30 in the state is 489mm, but only 343 mm was received – 30% less than normal." He, however, assured that farmers' suggestions, particularly regarding the desilting of canals and the removal of weeds and trees from canal beds and slopes, would be acted upon.
