Trump Says Xi Jinping Assured Him China Would Not Invade Taiwan During His Presidency
The US President said Xi Jinping assured him China wouldn't invade Taiwan during Trump's term.
US President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him China would not launch an invasion of Taiwan while Trump is in office. Speaking to Fox News, Donald Trump recalled a conversation in which Xi Jinping promised restraint.
The US President said, 'He told me, 'I will never do it as long as you're president.'. I appreciate that. But he also said, 'I am very patient and China is very patient.'"
Donald Trump noted the assurance came during a phone call in June- the first confirmed conversation between the two leaders since Donald Trump began his second term in the White House. He had also previously mentioned another call in April, without providing details.
China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has vowed to bring it under its control, by force if necessary. Taiwan rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims and says only its people can decide their future.
Responding to questions, the Chinese Embassy in Washington reiterated that Taiwan remains 'the most important and sensitive issue" in US-China relations. Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu urged the US to adhere to the one-China principle, manage Taiwan-related matters prudently, and safeguard stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Although the US is Taiwan's primary arms supplier and political backer, it does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with the island.
Taiwan's government has yet to comment on Trump's remarks. However, Wang Ting-yu, a senior lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, wrote on Facebook that while Taiwan welcomes support from allies, 'security cannot rely on the enemy's promise, nor solely on the help from friends. Strengthening our own defence capability is fundamental."

India-US trade talks deferred? Negotiators cancel August trip to New Delhi amid rising tensions, says report
The proposed trade agreement between India and the United States has likely been delayed as a visit by US trade negotiators to New Delhi scheduled this month is called off amid rising tensions, Reuters reported citing sources. The visit was originally scheduled between August 25 to 29; and this development has now dashed hopes of a reprieve from the 50 per cent tariffs regime set to kick in from August 27, as per the report. The sources added that a new date for negotiations related to the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) is yet to be decided, it added. The report noted that the US embassy in New Delhi said it has no additional information on trade or tariff talks, adding that the matter is being handled by the United States Trade Representative (USTR); while the Union Trade Ministry did not immediately respond to queries. Earlier in August, US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, claiming that it is 'punishment' for India's continued trade ties with Russia. He further stated that India buying Russian oil is contributing to Russian President Vladimir Putin's offensive in Ukraine. The new import tax, which will come into effect from August 27, will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50 per cent — lining up India among the highest penalised trading partners of the US. After Donald Trump's hike duties, trade talks between India and the US collapsed despite five rounds of negotiations. The sticking point has been disagreement over on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that India is being unfairly singled out for buying Russian oil while the US and its ally, the European Union (EU), themselves continue to purchase goods from Russia. Uttarakhand Cabinet Clears Minority Education Bill Proposal: What Is It? What Next For Madrasas?
Last Updated: The legislation seeks to regulate minority educational institutions across the state. The ruling BJP says the move is aimed at safeguarding the Devbhoomi -- the Land of Gods After implementing the much-talked-about Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Pushkar Singh Dhami government is now set to introduce the Uttarakhand Minority Education (UME) Bill in the upcoming assembly session. The legislation seeks to regulate minority educational institutions across the state. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says the move is aimed at safeguarding the Devbhoomi — the Land of Gods. Cabinet nod for new bill The cabinet cleared the proposal for the new bill on Sunday. According to government sources, the legislation will pave the way for establishing an authority to oversee minority institutions – from approving fresh proposals to ensuring improved academic standards. The BJP hailed the cabinet's decision as a 'game changer." 'The Minority Education Bill is a big step towards restoring and protecting Uttarakhand's identity as Devbhoomi," said Mahendra Bhatt, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP. The authority will have power to decide on the curriculum for these institutions. Madrasa Education Board Act to be abolished In the same meeting, the cabinet decided to abolish the Madrasa Education Board Act, introduced by the Harish Rawat government in 2016. The Madarsa Board currently oversees madrasas – Muslim religious schools – and frames rules for Arbi and Farsi madrasas, which will now be scrapped. Reacting sharply, former CM Harish Rawat said there was no reason to oppose the Madrasa Board. 'Madrasas have a legacy dating back to the pre-Independence era and even contributed to the freedom movement. You may abolish the Board, but you cannot erase history," Rawat told News18. Currently, there are 452 registered madrasas in Uttarakhand. However, several unregistered madrasas are also operational, particularly in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, which have significant Muslim population. In recent months, the Dhami government acted against 237 illegal madrasas. As per the 2011 Census, Muslims constitute nearly 14% of the state's population, making them Uttarakhand's largest minority group. view comments First Published: News explainers Uttarakhand Cabinet Clears Minority Education Bill Proposal: What Is It?
