MediaTek to support mmWave spectrum band, 6G in India

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese wireless chipset provider MediaTek said that it would support millimeter wave or mmWave frequency bands in India that could also foster the country's next generation (6G) ambition. "MediaTek invests very heavily in cellular. That's our biggest segment. We believe in millimeter wave bands. From a cellular perspective, you need millimeter wave bands because we're all going to run out of frequencies and also 6G is also going to have even higher frequencies," Thomas Ho, marketing director, MediaTek said. Rick Tsai-headed fabless semiconductor company said that India's Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have millimeter wave airwaves in the 26 GHz band, and both incumbent telecom carriers are in the planning stage. "We know that Jio and Airtel have this frequency (26 GHz) band. And also the Indian government has requested to have some usage of this frequency band. So they are all under the planning to develop a product using this frequency band," the executive said. In the 2022 spectrum sale, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel acquired airwaves in the 26 GHz band. However, both service providers had to roll out 5G services based on mmWave range to meet minimum rollout norms. Last month, Jio sought approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to use mmWave spectrum for Wi-Fi technology. "India is a top-ranking Wi-Fi region, supporting diverse needs and driving innovation with Jio." The multinational said that it holds as much as 60% of the indoor Wi-Fi 6 router market, enhancing user experience with Jio and Airtel's Air Fiber rollout. MediaTek's Ho further said that MediaTek is a "big believer in millimeter wave range" and it did not take off not just India but worldwide due to various factors but the main reason is the cost versus benefit. "But, we are releasing, and we did release phones that support millimeter wave bands." In 2022, MediaTek unveiled its first mmWave 5G chipset, Dimensity 1050 system-on-chip (SoC) to power the next generation of 5G smartphones. "We also have 5G Continuous Delivery (CD) solutions that support millimeter wave, just like our competitor," he said, adding that the use of spectrum is a matter of economics, and the fabless chipset multinational said that it would support the Indian telcos. "The future, like 6G, is kind of partly built upon that." Early this year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), in a bid to open up more mmWave frequencies, had recommended the 37-37.5 GHz and 37.5-40 GHz spectrum bands for auction. The mmWave bands above 24 gigahertz (GHz) are considered as a valuable resource catering to densely populated urban areas. Airwaves in the high band offer an opportunity for service operators to offer low latency and high capacity. MediaTek claims to be the largest Wi-Fi supplier worldwide with over 2 billion devices shipped every year, and holds a leadership position in India's broadband market.

iQOO Z10 Lite 5G launching with 6,000mAh battery on June 18: Check expected price, specs and more

After introducing the iQOO Z10 and the Z10x in India last April, iQOO is all set to expand the Z10 series with the launch of the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G. The company has released an official teaser claiming the upcoming Z10 Lite 5G will have the biggest battery in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segment, i.e., a 6,000mAh unit. Apart from this, the teaser shows that the upcoming device is going to sport a dual-rear camera setup and will be powered by a Snapdragon chipset. For context, the standard iQOO Z10 is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, while the Z10x runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor. advertisement According to a teaser shared by iQOO India on X (formerly Twitter), the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G will officially launch in India on June 18. As seen in the image, the phone will come in a blue colour option. However, we do expect to see the phone launch in other colour variants as well. Interestingly, X accounts of Snapdragon India and Amazon India have also been tagged in the post, suggesting that the upcoming phone will feature a Snapdragon chip under the hood and will be available for purchase via Amazon. Other than this, no official details are known about the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G yet. When it comes to expectations, the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G could likely feature a 6.5 to 6.7-inch IPS LCD display, with an HD+ resolution and possibly a 120Hz refresh rate. Its predecessor, the Z9 Lite, launched with a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz screen refresh rate. advertisement On the inside, expect to see a Snapdragon processor, as mentioned above — possibly the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip, an SoC we've already seen in phones such as the Redmi 14C 5G and Poco M7 5G. The Z9 Lite was powered by the Dimensity 6300 SoC. iQOO has already confirmed that the battery capacity of the Z10 Lite 5G will be 6,000mAh, which is a notable bump from the 5,000mAh battery seen on the Z9 Lite. However, we expect the charging speeds to remain the same as last year's model, i.e., 15W, with a charger bundled inside the box. In terms of software, the phone will likely ship with Funtouch OS 15 atop Android 15. Finally, in terms of optics, we are not expecting major upgrades here. The iQOO Z10 Lite 5G will likely feature a similar camera setup as the Z9 Lite, i.e., a 50-megapixel dual-rear setup along with an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies. As for pricing, the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G is expected to start at Rs 9,999, qualifying it for the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. The phone would likely come with 4GB and 6GB RAM options, and at least 128GB of base storage, similar to its predecessor. We'll get to know more about the iQOO Z10 Lite 5G on June 18. Realme GT 7 Delivers With Its Performance And Workhorse Traits

Last Updated: Realme GT 7 has the latest chipset, a clean design that won't wow you much but has other features to keep you engaged. The Realme GT series has epitomised performance in a value for money offering. The GT 7 Pro has become the flag bearer but the regular GT 7 is no slouch either which becomes evident when you browse through its hardware and see it perform in daily use. Realme has made a habit of launching one too many devices that have similar traits but the GT series is its main focus, especially because that's where most people are buying their phones these days. Talking about the Realme GT 7, priced at 42,999, it has the latest hardware, the design focuses on practicality and you have a decent chunk of a battery packed inside. But does that translate into the GT value that we have become used to, we find out the answer. Not A Design Marvel Realme GT 7 will not wow you with its design like the Galaxy S25 Edge and that will be acceptable to most for the price tag. The textured panel at the panel is made of plastic but does not give you the cheap impression of the material and the build quality is solid enough to make you feel comfortable about its longevity. It is not compact in size by any means but that is not going to be an issue for people who need a phone for gaming and other heavy tasks. The GT 7 does weigh over 205 grams which can make it unwieldy for some users, and they should keep that in mind while considering this model. Performance Guaranteed Realme is using the new MediaTek Dimensity 9400e chipset which is a slightly toned down version of the premium variant but still has enough oomph and power to keep you going all day and night long. Pair that with 12GB RAM (12GB further via memory) and you have a device that can happily handle whatever you throw at it without breaking a sweat. It can run intensive games at highest settings and see no frame drop or lag to ruin the experience. While the hardware shines, we are less keen on the OS experience of the GT 7 even though the Realme UI 6.0 has cleaned up its act to some extent. The pre-loaded app situation doesn't change much here and the UI definitely needs a new coating or overhaul to match the premiumness of the device. The software is responsive and fluid overall but the lack of x-factor and clean UI still does not please us. Realme has not cut costs with the display and offering an LTPO AMOLED panel with 1B colours, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support is as good as it can get. The screen size of 6.78-inch makes it ideal for gamers and watching videos is also a strong point. However, we would have liked a better screen protection than the Gorilla Glass 7i which is fine for a phone in a lower price bracket. The colours are crisp and the deep blacks of the panel make it pleasing to the eye. The outdoor visibility is also adequate and won't have any complaints around it. The Imaging Hits And Misses Realme GT 7 goes with a duo of 50MP wide sensor and telephoto lens along with an 8MP ultrawide shooter. The primary sensor does well in good bright conditions with detailed photos and sharp contrast in play. The 50MP telephoto lens adds further versatility to the shooting chops and gives you the close-up shots with natural tones and right level of detail. Yes, the processing can be a mixed bag but overall performance is quite good and will keep you happy. However, the 8MP ultra-wide angle lens is basic and you should expect average photos if you really like using the angle. The low light photos in general lack the sharpness and the extra light from the sensor makes it look sketchy. Realme can fix these issues with a quick update. The Long Workhorse Carrier Realme has packed the GT 7 with a 7,000mAh silicone carbon grade battery that allows the phone to be as sleek as this with a large capacity unit. You also get 120W charging speed out of the box. The battery life is really good and you can be rest assured about the phone for well over 24 hours and still left with over 25 percent juice in the tank. top videos View all Our daily grind includes using the phone switching between Wi-Fi and 5G network to see if the device heats up and handles the fluctuations with a stable profile. The heating was minimum, which is good in most cases, and the screen-on-time is a good indication of how the battery manages different tasks. This new battery tech is really effective and the GT 7 thrives in its presence. Realme GT 7 is an impressive performer that handles the daily grind with a smile on its face and the long battery life adds up to the endurance needs of the users these days. The main cameras are reliable and usable in bright conditions but the low light imaging could use some work. A definite option for heavy users who don't want battery anxiety.
