Man, 81, in epic charity drive after life-saving op
A grandfather who underwent innovative life-saving lung surgery is preparing to drive the length of the UK in his classic car for charity.
Dave Whittington was diagnosed with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension - a relatively rare disease where blood clots block the lung's arteries - in November 2020.
The 81-year-old, from Shepshed, Leicestershire, underwent a procedure that involved his heart being stopped and all the blood being drained from his body.
He said he had been through a "long and difficult" recovery but was now determined to challenge himself further by driving his 57-year-old MGC from John O'Groats to Land's End.
Mr Whittington and his wife Thelma, 79, will start the epic journey on Monday to say "a huge thank you" and raise money for two charities that helped him.
Mr Whittington, who has 10 grandchildren, underwent life-saving pulmonary endarterectomy surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire.
It is the only centre in the UK offering the procedure to remove the clots and scar material by stopping the patient's heart and draining all of the blood from their body.
To do this the team cools the body from 37C to 20C to prevent damage to the organs, including the brain.
The couple hope to raise awareness of the disease and the specialist surgery while raising money for the Royal Papworth Charity and Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK).
They are due to travel 1,178 miles from Scotland to Cornwall via a number of pulmonary hypertension hospital centres over four days.
Mr Whittington said: "My road to recovery has been long and at times difficult but I am determined to challenge myself further in aid of what I feel are two hugely worthwhile causes.
"This driving challenge is my way of saying a huge thank you from myself and my family.
"Plus, my bucket list is starting to get rusty so now is the time to do the road trip I've always wanted to do."
David Jenkins, a consultant in cardiothoracic surgery at the hospital, performed Mr Whittington's surgery.
He said: "It has been great to see Dave looking so well and be given the chance to look around his classic car.
"All the hospital staff involved in his treatment and care wish him and Thelma the best of luck."
Dr Iain Armstrong, chair of PHA UK, added: "We are hugely grateful to Dave and Thelma for supporting us with this challenge.
"It's a wonderful way to celebrate the success of Dave's surgery and the new lease of life it has provided, and we wish them all the best for their adventure."

Unearthed Instagram posts from the mother who was charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter before being found unresponsive in her jail cell have revealed a dark decline. Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, was charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter Sophia Rose, who was allegedly stabbed 'multiple' times in the front yard of their home in Moore Park Beach near Bundaberg on May 26. Days after entering custody, Flanigan was found unresponsive in her high security cell at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre and rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition. She died on Sunday night. Though few photos of her life before children were publicly shared, Flanigan's online posts before having her first child in 2021 were filled with joy and carefree fun. She spent time across Queensland, from the beaches at Currumbin to a hike through Mount Glorious and Mount Ngungun with her friends. She fell pregnant with her first child, Sophia, at the tail end of 2020 and shared the news with her Instagram followers in February 2021. '16 weeks pregnant and totally loving becoming your mama my sweet girl,' she captioned an Instagram selfie cradling her bump. Comments of support flooded her social media following her announcement, prompting Flanigan to joke about her morning sickness and dreaded weight gain. 'I am enjoying pregnancy a lot more now that I am in the second trimester and not feeling sick all the time haha!' she wrote. 'Just not looking forward to the weight gain but I guess it's all part of it lol.' Two months later, Flanigan shared an image of her baby bump and discussed the 'rapid transformation' she experienced 'mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally'. She said 'becoming a mum is the most amazing journey'. Two weeks before Sophia was born, Flanigan shared a final pregnancy selfie, again cradling her growing bump.'Can't wait to hold you in my arms,' she wrote in anticipation. A little under three weeks later, the first picture of Sophia was published on social media. She was wrapped in a floral swaddle and wore a matching bow headband. The words '7 days old' were written on wooden blocks besides the sleeping baby. Then, for nearly three years, her Instagram account went dark, with no posts she was seen in other posts attending the Moore Park Beach Festival with a friend and fellow mother in August 2023. Her young son was strapped to her chest and she held Sophia's hand as she beamed towards the camera. January 2024 marked the return to Instagram for the mother of three, sharing a selection of date-night images with her ex-partner. 'Believe In Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and above all things, Love,' she captioned the revealed that she had her third child in September last year in a photo shoot with her 'divine babies', including her son, newborn daughter and eldest child Sophia captured snuggling next to her little sister and dancing around the room in a soft pink tulle and lace dress. In May, eight months after her previous post, Flanigan posted a selfie alongside religious images. 'Today I rise,' the post read. 'Clothed in fire. Covered in grace. Armoured by God.' Former DC school worker arrested on child sexual assault material charges
The Brief A D.C. man, Devonne Keith Brown, 56, was arrested by the FBI on child sexual abuse material (CSAM) charges after allegedly soliciting explicit images from minors in Prince George's County using CashApp. Court documents detail how Brown, using the alias "Joseph," met a minor at a local grocery store, sent her money for ice cream, and later received nude photos via Instagram and iMessage. Brown, a former health teacher at IDEA Public Charter School and track coach with Project Impact Sports, is no longer employed by the school, which says there's no indication any IDEA students were involved. WASHINGTON - A D.C. man was arrested by the FBI Washington Field Office on child sexual abuse material (CSAM) charges. What we know Devonne Keith Brown, 56, was accused of soliciting CSAM from a young girl in Prince George's County, Maryland. According to court documents, Brown allegedly used CashApp to send payments to minors. "for snacks ? more photos otw" was the comment on one $15 CashApp request sent to Brown from a minor. Another minor told the FBI that she met "Joseph," an adult male, at a Giant grocery store near her home. She stated that he sent her money for ice cream on Cash app, and that she communicated with him via Instagram and iMessage, sending him nude photographs of herself. "Those who prey on minors to solicit the production of CSAM are morally reprehensible and will be held accountable for their heinous crimes," said Steven Jensen, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. "The FBI remains committed to protecting our children and ridding our communities of this grievous scourge." Brown has been identified as an employee of the IDEA Public Charter School as a Health teacher. He's also believed to be involved with a track club called "Project Impact Sports." IDEA Public Charter School in Northeast D.C. issued the following statement: "IDEA Public Charter School is deeply concerned by the serious allegations involving a former employee. This individual is no longer employed by the school. The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and supporting their ongoing investigation.
