13th annual Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium sees over 500 Cyclists compete on Saturday

Chicago Tribune28-07-2025
Under the threat of rain, over 500 racers took part in the 13th annual Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium in downtown Lake Bluff on Saturday, for an all-day racing event from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium was the ninth race in the Chicago Grit 10-race series, offering courses across greater Chicagoland, from West Dundee to Winfield, Elgin, and Fulton Market in Chicago, and taking place over 10 consecutive days.
'Lake Bluff not only provides a bucolic backdrop for Saturday's race, but this is a town where residents rally around their public events, like the block party tradition which takes place on the Village Green in tandem with the Criterium,' Drew Irvin, administrator for the Village of Lake Bluff, said.
Saturday's full-day racing lineup featured 9 pro and amateur men's and women's bicycle races with cyclists from more than 42 states and many foreign countries.
'Over the years, the Criterium brings thousands of cyclists and sporting enthusiasts into our town on race day, elevating exposure to our entertainment and business district, and giving little Lake Bluff a chance to showcase all it has to offer,' Irvin said.
Jan Van Mieghem of Evanston says he is an avid racer with two sons in Saturday's first race, in the Men's Novice category.
'We've been watching the weather closely; the threat of rain can make the course more challenging, and if the corners get slick, it really increases the crash threat,' Van Mieghem said.
Ron Oesterlein is co-director of the Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium and owner of Lake Bluff Hub & Cycle.
'The Grit strength race is so exciting to watch, every 45 seconds or so, you can see 100 racers come past you – the racers just fly by,' Oesterlein said.
Families were encouraged to join in the Criterium fun by participating in the Family Fun Ride, sponsored by Lake Forest Bank & Trust, Lake Bluff, at 6:15 p.m. on the pro racecourse.
'Biking really brings our community together, and the Family Fun race is a big deal for the kids because they get to experience a professionally run track, and the high energy of the crowd — quite a thrilling moment for them,' Oesterlein said.
Oesterlein says Northwestern Medicine was the title sponsor and official healthcare provider for the Lake Bluff Criterium.
'We believe good health starts with strong, healthy communities and are hopeful that this world-class sporting event inspires our neighbors to lead more active, health-focused lifestyles.' Seamus Collins, president of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, said in a news release.
Northwestern Medicine also provided on-site healthcare professionals to care for racers and spectators in need of medical attention, all part of their first-aid station set up at the Lake Bluff Fire Station.
In addition to Northwestern Medicine, title sponsor for the 13th consecutive year, other sponsors included: pace car sponsor Knauz Automotive Group, Lake Forest Bank & Trust, Lake Bluff; ULINE; Lake Forest Country Day School; DiVinci Painters; Pasquesi Home & Garden; and EJ's Place Restaurant.
The Lake Bluff Crit Party took place on the Village Green from 4 until 8 p.m., featuring live music by the Nic Barnum Band, Lake Bluff food vendors Bangkok Tokyo and Duffer's Pub, plus the Sweet Memories ice cream truck. Craft beer from Nightshade and Dark's Pandemonium Brewery – with a special batch of IPA brewed just for the event called 'Drunk and in Charge of a Bicycle,' with a portion of the proceeds from beer sales donated to the Roberti Community House in Waukegan.
Twenty-year-old Marcus Van Mieghem of Evanston took first place in the Men's Novice race.
'I learned early on how important it is to try and conserve energy during the race while staying among the group of lead racers,' Van Mieghem said.
'I prepared for the Criterium, with hard 20-minute training to build a strong base and build the stamina to take on the longer 30-minute course,' Van Mieghem added.

$15K Grant from FHLB Dallas and Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Will Help New Orleans Resident Weather Future Storms

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A longtime New Orleans, Louisiana, resident is rebuilding nearly two decades after Hurricane Katrina damaged her home, thanks in part to a $15,000 Disaster Rebuilding Assistance (DRA) grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas). The DRA grant was awarded through FHLB Dallas member Gulf Coast Bank & Trust to provide a new storm-resistant roof for Gail Micken. Ms. Micken, a retiree, moved into her home in April 2005. Just a few months later, Hurricane Katrina swept through Louisiana, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Fortunately, her home, situated on higher ground, was spared from severe flooding. However, the roof sustained significant damage that worsened with time. 'After Katrina and all the smaller storms since, my roof just kept getting worse, and it's a big house, so I had to fix it in pieces,' Ms. Micken said. 'With prices going up and insurance getting harder to afford, this grant was a blessing. It gave me the help I needed to make my home safe again. This program is making a difference for people like me on a fixed income.' Administered through FHLB Dallas member institutions, DRA provides grants for the repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction of owner-occupied housing affected by disaster events in federally declared disaster areas within FHLB Dallas's five-state District of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas. Ms. Micken's new roof meets FORTIFIED standards by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), designed to withstand hurricanes, high winds, hail and severe thunderstorms. 'We're proud to play a role in helping lifelong New Orleans residents like Ms. Micken repair their homes after a natural disaster,' said Brittainy Fields, CRA officer at Gulf Coast Bank & Trust. 'Through these grants, we're not only preserving housing but also strengthening safety and storm preparedness for the future.' Since 2024, Gulf Coast Bank & Trust has awarded $347,000 in FHLB Dallas DRA grants. 'A FORTIFIED roof is a proactive investment in the quality and longevity of our housing stock,' said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and Director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas. 'By helping homeowners improve and maintain their properties, we're supporting community stability and giving residents the security and comfort they deserve.' For 2025, FHLB Dallas set aside $4 million for the DRA program. Learn more about DRA. Attacking Versatility & ‘Grit' At The Heart Of Cristian Chivu's New Inter Milan

Attacking versatility and 'grit' will be the elements at the heart of the new-look Inter Milan under coach Cristian Chivu. This is the view in today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Cristian Chivu has now had some time to settle in at Inter Milan. When the Romanian took over as Nerazzurri coach, he was replacing Simone Inzaghi on the fly. Therefore, that meant that at the Club World Cup, Chivu stuck with Inzaghi's system by and large. He didn't have time to really implement his own ideas. But now, Chivu has had the preseason training camp with which to put his stamp on the Nerazzurri. Attacking Versatility & 'Grit' Key To New-Look Inter Under Chivu SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 21: Cristian Chivu, Head Coach of FC Internazionale Milano, looks on during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between FC Internazionale Milano and Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field on June 21, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) According to the Corriere dello Sport, the most notable change to Inter between Inzaghi and Chivu will be a greater versatility in attack. Under Inzaghi, there were virtually always two strikers. And then supporting them was a midfield trio, and two wingbacks. This led to Inter really focusing on using the wide areas to stretch and move up the pitch. On the other hand, the Corriere note, Chivu is less wedded to any particular formation. The 44-year-old has certainly shown a willingness to use Inzaghi's 3-5-2 shape. However, 3-4-2-1 and 3-4-1-2 are also possibilities. Inter could even line up with a back four at times. The idea for Chivu is to mix the attack up, but always have plenty of options to get the ball into the penalty area centrally. Therefore, players as diverse as Davide Frattesi, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Luis Henrique are among the options that Chivu could deploy as attacking midfielders. Meanwhile, the Corriere note, Chivu is also focusing more on physicality and winning the ball high. He wants Inter to regain their 'grit' and intensity.
