Derby declarations move to 72-hour stage
The Betfred Derby will become a 72-hour declaration race in 2025 for the first time in its 245-year history, The Jockey Club has announced.
In a historic move, the world's most famous Flat race – which was first staged in 1780 – is the first Group One race held in Britain to introduce 72-hour declarations.
The Jockey Club said it hoped that bringing forward the declaration deadline to Wednesday, 4 June will "prove beneficial in building a sense of anticipation and excitement both domestically and globally".
Jim Allen, general manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: "This racecourse has been at the forefront of positive change and new initiatives in British horse racing for generations, with the Derby becoming the first race to be filmed back in 1896 and then the first sporting event to be broadcast in 1931.
"We're delighted to be able to introduce 72-hour declarations for this year's Betfred Derby, demonstrating that we are always looking for new ways to innovate and ensure that our sport's most iconic Flat race continues to stand out from the rest.
"Having consulted with a range of stakeholders on this issue we are confident that this change will not only help build anticipation for the world's most famous Flat race earlier in the week but also provide more certainty around the runners and riders on the day, driving more interest and engagement in advance of the start of the Betfred Derby Festival.
"We are hugely grateful to the British Horseracing Authority for their co-operation and help in order to make this change happen at relatively short notice, and to all those participants who have supported us in making this move."
The other seven races staged on Betfred Derby Day and all those taking place on Ladies Day will retain their 48-hour declaration deadline.

But assuming it's good to soft or quicker, ROYAL DRESS is the one to be on. She was an unlucky third in this last year before striking in this grade at The Curragh. She has since held her own in better races including when third at York last time. William Buick is an eyecatching booking too. Bermuda Longtail looked promising when beaten half a length in a York Listed contest last month and has much more to come. She gets plenty of weight for age too. Skellet progressed last season and is another who should be capable of better for Ralph Beckett. 1.35 DOCKLANDS has some fancy Group 1 form including his second in the Queen Anne at last year's Royal Ascot. He was sent all over the globe after that with solid results and ran a solid comeback at Ascot last time. He'll be fitter for that and has won on quick and slow ground. Persica didn't fire in the Lockinge last time but took a Newmarket Group 3 easily enough on comeback and has won here before. Ryan Moore's a good booking and he's a big threat. Royal Playwright gets the best part of a stone from his older rivals and didn't get the run of the race in the Dante last time. He could take a major step forward here. Royal Dubai wasn't disgraced at Ascot last time and looks the pick of the bigger prices. 2.10 AGAINST THE WIND could be the answer to this tricky puzzle. He has plenty of weight but has been running well with a Thirsk win followed by a fine York third last time. He gets away quickly so should be suited by this track. Naana's Sparkle ran a nice race at Goodwood last time when third and showed lots of pace. He looks on a fair mark. Ruby's Profit got the better of Mademoiselle in that race and they should both be right at home here too after showing a lot of boot. Tees Aggregates saves his best for Catterick so should love Epsom which is another tricky track. He may not be quite good enough to win but could be an each-way bet if you can get extra places. Blinky won a couple on the all-weather before a decent third at Chester last time. A repeat of that would put him in the place picture from what should be an ideal draw. 2.45 JER BATT always faced a tough task from a wide draw at Chester last time yet still ran a good race. He has some fine handicap form over this trip yet is still on a fair weight and the booking of Oisin Murphy is a plus. He'll be right there. Clarendon House is quirky but has enough quality to figure if he fancies it. He went well in the Group 3 Palace House at Newmarket last time. Last year's winner Dream Composer was also badly drawn at Chester latest but looked much better when second at Pontefract on comeback. He can figure again. Jm Jungle has been placed in hot York handicaps on his past two outings. He likes this trip and is a quick starter so has every chance. Vintage Clarets showed positive signs on the Knavesmire latest and is in the each-way picture too. 3.30 PRIDE OF ARRAS was a brilliant Dante winner at York and has more to come. French raider Midak looks overpriced, while Lambourn would have a say if the rain comes. And you never rule out Ryan Moore on Delacroix , especially as the jockey was simply brilliant on Minnie Hauk in the Oaks. Glasgow have their homework done ahead of Leinster rematch
It's eight weeks to the day since Glasgow Warriors were thumped 52-0 by Leinster at Aviva Stadium in the quarter-final of the Investec Champions Cup, and yet there's a sense that the Scottish side are returning to Dublin this weekend with those scars fully healed. In the immediate aftermath of that hammering in April, Glasgow boss Franco Smith kept an even keel. "For me, we've been winning quite a bit and pushing the players' boundaries and limits every week but today they found out what is still needed to be competitive in international rugby or the top end of club rugby," he said, after his side were "bullied" by their hosts. Smith wasn't the first coach to say his side would take their learnings from a big defeat to Leinster, but the evidence suggests those were not empty words. When they returned to Dublin three weeks ago in the final round of the URC's regular season, they put up a much sterner fight in a 13-5 defeat, and while the game was ultimately a dead-rubber, they frustrated a Leinster side whose confidence looked dented following their Champions Cup exit against the Northampton Saints. As they prepare to meet this Saturday, all of the pressure is on Leinster, who are desperate to end a four-year wait for silverware. Glasgow arrive into town off the back of a 36-18 win against the Stormers last time out, arguably their best performance of the season. "Leinster are the standard setters in this competition," Smith (above) said, after naming his side for Saturday's semi-final. "They finished top of the standings for a reason, and have consistently out-performed teams across the course of this season while showing their strength in depth. "It is a challenge that we know we will need to be at our best to meet, and the players are focused on the task at hand. "Training this week has been sharp and competitive, with every player working hard for each other to put this squad in the best possible position for tomorrow afternoon." If Glasgow are to retain the title they won last season, they will once again have to do it the hard way. Just as it was last season, Ireland and South Africa would be their semi-final and final destinations, should they go all the way. But Smith isn't thinking any further than the Aviva. "It's a semi-final. The mindset and approach and attitude in a final game is obviously the main ingredient," he said. "We've got to be on top of our game. They've got a world-class team. They've proven it in the Test match arena, they've proven it in this competition. "It's a class outfit. It's going to be a tough challenge. "The only way we're going to get better and keep on growing and progressing is if we challenge ourselves to be the best version of ourselves." While Leinster are without Caelan Doris, Josh van der Flier, Garry Ringrose, Tadhg Furlong and now Hugo Keenan, Glasgow are also dealing with a hefty injury list this weekend. Two of their British and Irish Lions squad members, Zander Fagerson and Huw Jones (above), are out injured, while Scotland internationals Matt Fagerson and Jack Dempsey are also sidelined. Sione Tuipulotu, who returned from a long term injury in Round 18 against Leinster, looked back to his best in the quarter-final win against the Stormers, and the Scotland captain shifts across to outside centre this week, Tom Jordan pivoting from out-half to first centre, and Adam Hastings coming in at out-half. "We've had a couple of outings in Dublin already this year, so we know what we're coming up against on Saturday," Jordan said. "We fully expect Leinster to bring their best and we know how strong they are across the field. "We know we need to get our mindset right and just have each other's back for 80 minutes – we're loving our footy at the minute and we want to leave it all out there for each other on Saturday. "All the players know deep down what we have to do. "We've got to relish these matches and we know what it takes in this competition. Everyone's excited to get out to Dublin, and we're ready to get stuck in this weekend."
