Why you should always put a shoe in your hotel safe: A travel hack explained

Time of Indiaa day ago
When travelling, it's easy to forget valuables in hotel rooms, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. A clever hack shared by flight attendants is to always leave one shoe in the hotel safe along with your important items.
This simple trick works because you won't want to leave the room wearing only one shoe, prompting you to check the safe before you go. It acts as a natural reminder to collect passports, wallets, or electronics stored inside. This small but effective habit can help prevent the stress and hassle of leaving belongings behind during your travels.
A flight attendant named Esther, who has spent countless nights in hotels due to her job, shared a clever travel tip in a TikTok video aimed at frequent hotel guests.
In the video, she highlights a simple yet often overlooked step that every traveler should do immediately upon entering a hotel room.
While most people remember to secure valuables like passports, cash, and credit cards in the room safe, many forget to retrieve these items when checking out.
How placing a shoe in hotel safe protects your valuables
The core idea is straightforward: place one of your shoes inside the hotel safe along with your valuables. Because no one wants to leave a hotel room wearing just one shoe, this acts as a natural prompt to remind you to check the safe before you leave.

This visual and physical cue ensures that you won't accidentally forget items like passports, wallets, or electronics stored inside.
Hotel safes are designed to keep your possessions secure during your stay, but many guests make the mistake of locking something valuable away and then rushing off without retrieving it. By keeping a shoe in the safe, you force yourself to pause and think before checking out. It's an easy psychological nudge that makes it far less likely you'll leave behind important belongings.
This simple practice can save you from potentially costly and stressful situations.
What to put in the safe besides a shoe
While a shoe is the most common and practical item used for this trick, any item you would never want to forget works just as well. Some travellers choose to leave a jacket, headphones, or even a charging cable in the safe to trigger their memory. The key is to use something personal and essential, something that naturally encourages you to make a final check before leaving the room.
Extra travel tips from flight attendants
Flight attendants are often treasure troves of travel wisdom, sharing practical tips that go beyond the shoe trick. For example, some recommend using shower caps to cover the soles of shoes or protect remote controls from germs during your stay. Others suggest keeping a USB charging cable handy for charging devices via the hotel TV when power outlets are limited or incompatible. These little hacks make hotel stays more comfortable and convenient, while also helping travellers stay organised and safe.
Why this small habit makes a big difference
Travel can be hectic, with packing, airport procedures, and time pressures all working against you. By adopting the simple habit of leaving a shoe, or another essential item, in the hotel safe, you add a layer of security that is both easy to follow and highly effective. This small step reduces the chances of accidentally leaving behind valuables, ensuring a smoother, less stressful end to your stay.

Visa applications jumped 32% for travel during the mid-August long weekend

MUMBAI: The recent Independence day long weekend spiked visa demand by 32 % as compared to regular weekend. Nearly 60% of the visas booked for this break were for short-haul destinations such as Bali, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Dubai, and Thailand (DAC), countries that combine quick flights with simple, hassle-free visas, said Altys, visa processing platform, referring to the applications the company received. "These destinations stood out for their mix of accessibility and experiences, making them the ideal choice for a holiday that could be planned at short notice. For many Indians, the Independence Day weekend was a chance to step out of the country without the burden of long waits or complicated paperwork. The influence of social media has amplified this trend, with Bali cafés, Vietnam bike tours, and Dubai nightlife shaping top-of-mind choices for travellers looking for vibrant, share-worthy escapes," said the company in a press statement. The surge was visible across the country. Tier 2 cities like Surat, Jaipur, and Mohali recorded 35% higher activity, while major metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore continued to dominate volumes. Millennials accounted for the largest share at 57%, followed by Gen Z at 22%, highlighting how younger demographics are driving this wave of weekend travel, it added. "What we're seeing is a mindset shift. Indians are no longer waiting months to plan a holiday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo A long weekend is now enough reason to cross a border. The destinations driving this surge, from Bali to Dubai, all share easy visa access, and that convenience is redefining how India travels. Atlys is committed to making international trips as seamless as domestic ones, unlocking access for every Indian,' said Mohak Nahta, Founder & CEO of Atlys. On the domestic front too, the Independence day, Janmasthami and Parsi New Year led long weekend increased demand to leisure and religious destinations as was indicated by higher airfares. The most noticeable change was on the Mumbai-Goa route. Airfares on the most popular non-metro destination out of Mumbai had cooled in the recent past with two airports in Goa offering travel options. But this year, last-minute planners wanting to fly out on August 15 morning or noon to Goa and return by a noon or evening flight, had to shell out Rs 23,000. The cheapest fare on the route was Rs 15,000, but that was for a red-eye flight that departs/lands around midnight. Last year, the cheapest 24-hour advance purchase fare to travel from Mumbai to Goa started at Rs 15,000, for flights with convenient timings. Leisure travel and religious tourism peaked for travel mid-August with last-minute fares to Kochi, Gaya, Ayodhya, Agra up. For instance: Mum-Kochi return fare was priced at Rs 12,000 for the Aug 22 weekend, it was Rs 25,00 0 for the Aug 15 weekend. Visiting Friends and Relatives' or VFR destinations don't go up in demand mid-Aug. A return ticket to fly non-stop from Mumbai to Kolkata was priced at Rs 14,000 which is a cheap option and so was the Rs 13,000 return for Mumbai to Delhi travel. In the coming weeks though, as the country enters the festive season phase, airfares from cities like Mumbai and Delhi to destinations like Kolkata, Varanasi, Ranchi, Madurai etc are set to go up several notches. PM set to launch power, tourism & industrial projects from Gaya today

Patna/Gaya/Buxar: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi's visit to Gaya on Friday is set to mark a major moment for Bihar with the launch and inauguration of projects worth nearly Rs 13,000 crore covering energy, infrastructure, tourism and industrial development. Prominent among them is the commissioning of the first 660MW unit of the Buxar thermal power project at Chausa, which will be virtually inaugurated by the PM from Gaya. Officials said a successful trial run was conducted last week and power supply would now flow directly to grid stations at Patna, Karmanasha and Dehri-on-Sone. "This moment marks a milestone not just for Buxar but for the entire state," said Pulak Chandra Upadhyay, in charge of commissioning. At the same event, the PM will inaugurate or lay foundation stones for projects linked to health, power, urban development and religious tourism. Deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary said, "The tourism sector developed in Bihar under the leadership of PM Modi and CM Nitish Kumar is opening new doors of prosperity. The new projects to be launched will play an important role in making the state economically and socially strong and will also expand employment opportunities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo " He said special focus has been given to boosting connectivity to religious destinations. These include a train service under the Buddha Circuit from Vaishali to Koderma, a 1.86-km-long six-lane bridge over the Ganga to improve access to Simaria Dham in Begusarai, and the Sultanganj-Deoghar railway line. Other schemes include the revival of Sikh sites such as Patna Sahib, the construction of five-star hotels at Rajgir and Vaishali, beautification of the Ramayana Circuit, and promotion of rural tourism through homestay programmes. HAM(S) national president and minister Santosh Suman said the PM's visit would give a major push to Gayaji's growth. "The PM will gift projects worth Rs 1,675 crore and inaugurate the proposed industrial corridor in Gaya," he said. The political significance of the visit is equally important with the Magadh region historically seen as a weak spot for the NDA. The sprawling Magadh University campus has transformed into a massive meeting venue. Spread over 38 acres, the site has been equipped with six waterproof mega pandals and more than one lakh chairs for attendees. East Gaya BJP president Vijay Manjhi said people were travelling from across Magadh as well as neighbouring Jharkhand districts to attend. "In view of the humid weather and expected crowd density, adequate medical and paramedical staff will remain on site," he said. Security has been tightened with the Special Protection Group sanitising and sealing the venue while air traffic will remain suspended during the Prime Minister's stay. Traffic curbs mean all but VVIPs and VIPs will have to walk over a kilometre to reach the site. Manjhi added that NDA workers had spread out to villages to carry the PM's message of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas". "The public response has been very good," he said, adding that allies JD(U) were also fully engaged. Senior JD(U) leader Lalji Prasad said working president Sanjay Jha had visited Gaya twice to motivate party cadres ahead of the rally.
