Shaun White kicks off new league with visions of snowboarding riches on the halfpipe
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Shaun White's next trick might carry more risk than the flips and twists he pulled off for decades inside all those halfpipes he used to dominate. This time, it's about making magic — and money — for the generation of snowboarders who looked up to him for all those years.
This week in Aspen marks the debut of The Snow League — a $1.6 million, four-stop halfpipe tour dreamed up by White and backed by deep-pocketed sports investors.
If successful, it will bring order to snowboarding's otherwise confusing competition schedule and usher in a new age for a sport that, for generations, held a wary view of riding for medals and money.
'I want to make it so you can have a decent season on the tour and make a great living, that's the goal,' said White, expressing what seems obvious for almost any pro sport but hasn't always been so clear-cut in the world of halfpipe.
'I'd like to see a pathway,' he said. 'In traditional sports, it's like, you start as an amateur, then you play high school, and then go to college and get into the pros. For this, I want the same.'
The world's most famous rider takes on a new role
White kicked off action Friday with an exhibition run through the halfpipe. His last official trip is now more than three years in the rearview mirror, when he capped off his fifth Olympics with an emotional farewell at the 2022 Beijing Games.
With the next Winter Olympics less than a year away — the first time since 2002 they won't include the sport's biggest star — it's clear the 38-year-old's three gold medals don't fully speak to the impact he's had on snowboarding, both on and off the mountain.
His appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone in 2006 was the opening salvo on a mission to portray snowboarders as more than stoner kids in baggy pants taking over resorts.
'It was giving attention to the sport and making it feel more professional,' White said. 'Like, every time I showed up on a talk show, I'm in a suit. I'm trying to carry a professionalism that would hopefully resonate within the sport.'
Being the best has little to do with being a 'world champion'
Not everyone went along for that ride.
A moment that stuck with White — and in a way led to what went down Friday on a sun-splashed halfpipe dug into the same mountain as the Winter X Games he once dominated — came when he was 16.
'I had an undefeated season — halfpipe, slopestyle, rail jam, big air, everything,' he said. 'I got to the end of the season and an interviewer said 'Great season, but how does it feel to not be the world champion?' I wasn't upset, but it was a clear picture of how disconnected all the events are.'
Aside from the Olympics turning into the sport's centerpiece, not much else changed in the ensuing 22 years.
Great riders span the globe, but rarely convene at the same time. There are crystal globes awarded for the best snowboarders over a World Cup season, but that circuit has never been considered the most prestigious in an ecosphere filled with the Dew Tour, X Games, Burton U.S. Open and other stops.
White's league is trying to solve one problem, by linking with other circuits to offer qualifying points for the Olympics — a move that gives riders incentive to participate.
The other is the $1.6 million prize pool for Season One — 'a starting point,' White calls it. The Snow League will pay out $50,000 first prizes for both men and women, along with a $50,000 prize for the champion of the four-event series that, in its inaugural run, will spread over 13 months, ending in March 2026.
More notable might be the $5,000 appearance fees for every athlete, along with a guaranteed $2,500 minimum win for the eight riders who make the final. By comparison, eighth place at a World Cup event in Switzerland last month was worth about $800.
'We put a lot of time and effort and obviously, we're all professional athletes,' said Maddie Mastro, the best American rider this side of Chloe Kim and among the favorites in Saturday's final. 'It's not as casual as some might think. We're working our butts off to make this our career, make this our life, and it's nice to have more support and feel valued.'
White's model puts new spin on 'progression' in the halfpipe
The word 'progression' infiltrates snowboarding's world of flips and spins on a daily basis.
The ethos of pushing the envelope might be best encapsulated by Ayumu Hirano, the 26-year-old Japanese superstar whose 'triple cork' — three head-over-heels flips — won the Beijing Olympics and redefined what was possible on a halfpipe.
Among White's biggest coups as he put together his league was to get Hirano to sign on. The Snow League will add halfpipe skiing at its next event, in China in December, and if White can close a deal to bring Olympic champion Eileen Gu onto that circuit, he'll have arguably the biggest star in action sports.
'The fact it's run by Shaun would generate huge interest in his events,' Hirano said. 'And because of this, many snowboarders will improve their performances and encourage more young athletes in the future.'
Hirano also gave a nod to a new competition template White is introducing with the goal of rethinking a judged sport that is difficult for non-experts to understand.
In the finals, riders will be placed into brackets for four rounds of one-on-one showdowns. Each round will be best of three, and riders must enter the halfpipe from opposite sides for the first two rounds. (It's harder to recognize on a snowboard, but it's the equivalent of skiing in forward for one run and backward on the next.)
The format lends a new element of strategy to the proceedings — what do you do if your opponent goes first and lands a killer run? — and forces riders, who often spend a season perfecting their two or three most comfortable routines, to imagine new ways of heading down the halfpipe.
'I wouldn't view it as a stresser, but it's definitely something different,' Mastro said. 'It probably will be a challenge tomorrow.'
A trip out of the comfort zone for White and the rest of snowboarding
White has spent a career trying to lift both himself and his sport out of their comfort zones.
Though he is no stranger to business — he's had apparel lines and even another snowboarding/music tour, Air & Style — this one holds extra weight. White is putting his name behind a concept that could change the sport or, if things don't go well, fade into obscurity and leave snowboarding fractured.
As with every risk he's taken on the halfpipe, White knows there's no going in halfway when making a move that feels like all-or-nothing.
'Having that clear path for the next generation is great,' he said. 'It'll give people the confidence to lean into this sport, and give them a place to perform, and to me, that's what's so exciting.'

The newly-crowned European champion can add the world title to a trophy haul that also included a French league and cup double this season. PSG had already qualified for the rebooted Club World Cup in the United States, but its Champions League triumph may still have come as a relief to FIFA. That's because, while the winner of the bumper tournament will officially be crowned the best club soccer team in the world, there are some notable absentees from the 32-team roster. Some big names are missing The Club World Cup will be without the champion of the most popular league in the world — the Premier League — given Liverpool's failure to meet the qualifying criteria. No place either for current Asian champion Al-Ahli from Saudi Arabia or Pyramids — the African champion from Egypt. Had either of the losing semifinalists — Barcelona or Arsenal — gone on to lift the trophy, then the flagship new tournament would have been without the reigning champion of Europe as well. The qualifying criteria were based on winners of continental trophies in the four years prior to the tournament, but not including the season directly before it. Chelsea is arriving at the Club World Cup with a new team, coach and even owners since it won the Champions League four years ago. The club is one of 12 from Europe, including stellar names like Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter and Juventus. South American clubs are Europe's top rivals Some of Latin America's biggest teams are in the tournament — including reigning Copa Libertadores champion Botafogo from Brazil. Three other Brazilian teams have qualified: Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense. Advertisement Argentina's famous rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors will also be there — and are expected to be backed by thousands of fans traveling to the U.S. It is the Latin American contingent that likely will likely present the biggest challenge to the European teams. 'Everyone wants to compete — the question is how you prepare to win, to try to win. That's what challenges me,' said Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate head coach. 'I want to win. I don't want to just go and see what happens.' Will it work? FIFA president Gianni Infantino believes the tournament is what the sport has been waiting for — a world championship for club soccer. In its previous format, which involved a mini-tournament of just seven teams instead of 32, it never fully captured global interest. Played in the middle of the season for Europe's top leagues, it had the feel of an exhibition, rather than a serious tournament. European teams dominated the modern era, winning all but one of the last 17 editions. The new format will be a much more exacting examination of the eventual winner — not least because there are so many teams from Europe, but also because there has been a marked drive to improve levels in countries like the U.S. and Saudi Arabia following a slew of star signings such as Lionel Messi, who has transformed Inter Miami. However, it remains unclear how much of an appetite there is among fans for another elite tournament in a calendar that is already saturated. Advertisement Details on ticket sales have not been released, but prices have dropped as the tournament has drawn closer and seats for the opening game between Al Ahly and Inter Miami on Saturday were still available this week. Marriott Bonvoy, a U.S. Soccer Federation partner, has been offering free tickets to some of its elite members for some games. It also remains to be seen what the television viewing figures will be, with the tournament broadcast globally on streaming service DAZN, which has also made 24 matches available with English-language commentary to TNT in the U.S. Eye-catching matches Al Ahly vs. Inter Miami, June 14, Miami Advertisement Five years after its MLS debut, Inter Miami — the team owned by David Beckham — will kick off in the first game of the Club World Cup. Its opponent in the opener is Egypt's Al Ahly — the winner of a record 12 African championships. It's likely to be party time at the Hard Rock Stadium, but the chance of Al Ahly spoiling Miami's big day is very real. PSG vs. Atletico Madrid, June 15, Los Angeles It will be an early test for PSG against Atletico. This is the type of match that could grace the later stages of any Champions League campaign between two of Europe's finest. Chelsea vs. LAFC, June 16, Atlanta Advertisement LAFC got in through the back door via a playoff against Club America of Mexico and its reward is an opening game against two-time Champions League winner Chelsea. Real Madrid vs. Al-Hilal, June 18, Miami The anticipation around this one would have been so much more intense had Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal not released Neymar in January, but it still has other star signings like striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. Madrid has a new coach in Xabi Alonso, who can get off to a flying start by winning the world title. PSG vs. Botafogo, June 19, Los Angeles Champions League winner against the reigning Copa Libertadores champion. This is the type of match that would have been the final in the tournament's previous guise — the best of Europe vs. the best of Latin America. Expect an electric atmosphere with Boca's fans likely to massively outnumber those cheering on German champion Bayern. Argentine President Javier Milei receives Israel's Genesis Prize
JERUSALEM (AP) — President Javier Milei of Argentina received the $1 million Genesis prize in Jerusalem on Thursday in recognition of his support for Israel as it faces a mounting international isolation over the war in Gaza. A statement from the Genesis Prize said Milei will donate the award to launch an initiative aimed at improving diplomatic relations between Israel and Latin American countries and fighting antisemitism in the region. It said the goal is to replicate the Abraham accords — a U.S.-brokered set of agreements aimed at winning broader recognition of Israel in the Arab world — with Latin American states. Breaking decades of policy precedent, Milei has gone further in his support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government than perhaps any other world leader, as Israel faces growing isolation over its bombardment and invasion of Gaza in response to Hamas-led attacks on Oct. 7, 2023. Milei also has pledged to move Argentina's embassy to Jerusalem, joining a handful of countries, including the U.S., to recognize the contested city as Israel's capital. Canada Olympic hockey: Projecting the men's First 6, big questions about the rest of the roster
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — As one of the top performers in this Stanley Cup Final, Brad Marchand is obviously dreaming about winning a championship right now. But he also has another important item placed at the top of his list of short-term goals: pulling on a Team Canada sweater at the Winter Olympics in Milan next February. Advertisement 'It's one of the biggest things I think about and that I care about,' Marchand told The Athletic on Wednesday. An impressive playoff run where he's been just a shade under a point-per-game for the Florida Panthers will certainly help his cause. The fact that he's 37 years old and coming off a regular season where he endured some health setbacks will not. As a result, Marchand is not expected to be among the first six players named to the team when Hockey Canada finalizes those selections. The first six roster choices for each participating country could be announced as soon as Monday. However, he's still very much in the mix for a spot on the final 25-man roster, due to be picked by Dec. 31. The Olympic tournament is so prominent in Marchand's mind that he only plans to take a couple of days of rest following the conclusion of this Stanley Cup Final before diving into his offseason training regimen. Never mind that his actual season is going to extend into at least mid-June. Marchand is among the generation of NHLers hurt by the league's decision to pass on participating in the 2018 and 2022 Games because they fell in his prime and were held immediately after he made his best-on-best debut at the 2016 World Cup. 'I feel like we got robbed of going to the last two,' Marchand said. 'It's an opportunity that I never ever thought that I would even come close to having. When you get in the NHL, that's like the pipe dream. That's the be-all or end-all. To be considered for that Olympic team is such a completely different level than anything you could ever really dream of when you're younger. 'So, yeah, when it became a possibility it's one of the things that I strive for. That's one of the things that I think about when I'm training and when things get tough.' Marchand was among the first six players selected by Team Canada last June for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Advertisement However, the veteran winger also went through three separate surgical procedures over the summer to fix issues with his elbow, groin and abdominal area. He missed three months of training as a result and saw a dip in his production to 51 points in 71 games split between the Boston Bruins and the Panthers. Marchand has effectively erased memories of a challenging year with his superlative playoffs, which have included two overtime winners and a series-leading four goals in the Stanley Cup Final. Plus he says there were other mitigating factors — like the fact the Bruins struggled on the power play — that contributed to his offensive dip. 'You go from being a point-a-game guy to 0.75 and it's (viewed as) the end of the world, but there's a lot of different factors that go into that,' Marchand said. 'I never overthought that stuff. I don't get caught up in how the outside world perceives my play or anything like that. It's just about coming in, working hard. If you do the right things long enough sometimes you get the right bounces.' So who would replace Marchand if he's not a member of the first six players announced? Here's our projection. Connor McDavid: Safe to say the guy that scored the McGolden Goal at the 4 Nations will be this team's centerpiece in Italy. Sidney Crosby: Captain Canada will get to play with another roster full of teammates who grew up idolizing him. Nathan MacKinnon: The NHL's third-highest scorer across the past three seasons and the 4 Nations MVP is another easy selection. Brayden Point: A favorite of head coach Jon Cooper highlights what an embarrassment of riches Canada has down the middle. Cale Makar: Fresh off a second career Norris Trophy, Makar is a lock to represent his country for the next decade. Devon Toews: There are multiple attractive options to go with on the final pick, including Sam Reinhart and Mitch Marner, but locking in another defenseman who just happens to be Makar's regular partner in Colorado makes a ton of sense. Pietrangelo was initially named to the 4 Nations roster but wound up missing the tournament to deal with an undisclosed injury and then endured a difficult end to his season with the Vegas Golden Knights. That begs the question: Will the right-shot defenseman's body still allow him to compete at an Olympic level? Advertisement The same thinking applies to Doughty, who was a last-minute injury fill-in at the 4 Nations after missing several months recovering from a broken left ankle. He's a beloved national team player who will need to prove something to management with his play in the opening months of next season. Among the notable younger blueliners knocking at the door for an opportunity behind them? Start with Thomas Harley of the Dallas Stars and Evan Bouchard of the Edmonton Oilers. It's pretty rare for a teenager to get the call from Team Canada, but Celebrini has a legitimate shot after capping an impressive rookie NHL season by hitting it off with Crosby at the IIHF World Hockey Championship. Some of Canada's most impactful hockey voices are already big fans of Celebrini's game – making the only real question 'when' he'll represent the country in best-on-best competition, not 'if' he will. However, the depth of Canadian talent at forward is enviable and management will be cognizant of using the final roster spots to fill specific roles. That Canada will bring 14 forwards to the event is worth noting because it opens the door to the possibility of carrying a younger player as an extra in case of injury or performance needs. Connor Bedard could theoretically be in the mix for that kind of job as well but would need to have a major breakout in the early part of next season for the Chicago Blackhawks. The consternation about the state of Canada's goaltending ended up being overblown because of how well Jordan Binnington played at the 4 Nations, particularly in the championship game against Team USA. We can safely pencil him into the No. 1 job for now with an important caveat that the position is often volatile and unpredictable. Advertisement That means the door remains open for any breakthrough performers in the first three months of the season to grab jobs. That includes Vegas' Adin Hill and Montreal's Samuel Montembeault, who were the Nos. 2 and 3 at the 4 Nations, but also a list that includes Vezina Trophy finalist Darcy Kuemper of the Los Angeles Kings and Logan Thompson, who had a strong year for the Washington Capitals.
