Joining up with the NOJHL champions for the seventh game of the league final late last month, the former OHLer from Garden River had three assists in his debut in a Cubs jersey. Moore maintained that momentum at the Centennial Cup national junior A hockey championship in Calgary with five goals and two assists in only four games, including a game-winning power-play tally in a 2-1 win over the Kam River Fighting Walleye on Wednesday.

Nolan Newton also scored, Lucas Signoretti had two assists and Karsen Chartier made 28 saves to propel the Cubs to a 2-2 record, good for third place in Group A and a berth in the quarter-final round on Friday.

They'll hit the ice at either 6 p.m. ET or 9:30 p.m. ET, likely against the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Easton Debray had the lone goal and Ashton Sadauskas made 24 saves for the Walleye, champions from the Superior International Junior Hockey League, on Wednesday. Kam River finished outside the playoff round despite opening the event with an overtime win against the Trenton Golden Hawks, first-place finishers in the group.

Greater Sudbury became the first NOJHL team to advance past the prelims at the national championship since the Soo Thunderbirds in 2012. The T-Birds fell 3-0 in the semifinals to the eventual winners, the Penticton Vees.
Prior to that, the Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats made the final in 2000, when the event was known as the Royal Bank Cup, and were edged 2-1 by the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday in the rubber game of the weekend series. Cubs bid to ignite offense in series finale vs. Pirates

And though they still struggled in a 3-1 victory against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, the Cubs hope the come-from-behind win will provide a boost in the rubber match of the teams' three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Seiya Suzuki knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning before Nico Hoerner drove in another run in the inning for insurance. 'When the lineup's been struggling a little bit, these games are a great opportunity to create momentum,' Suzuki said via an interpreter. 'The hope is we'll keep it going.' Chicago has been held to three runs or less in 10 of its 14 games this month. 'This is a good baseball team that's proven itself,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'We haven't scored some runs in a little bit of a stretch here. We will, because this is a good offense. That makes me optimistic, and it makes me know that we will score runs. We will be a good offense.' Kyle Tucker is one of those looking to get back on track. The right fielder has struggled since the All-Star break, hitting .198 in the season's second half. In August, he's managed just a .170 average in 13 games. He went 2-for-4 on Saturday after going 0-for-14 in his previous four games. 'We're still a really good team regardless of how the last couple weeks or whatever has gone,' Tucker said. 'We're still in a playoff hunt right now and in the playoffs currently. ...
