Thibaut Courtois signs new two-year contract at Real Madrid

New York Times19-07-2025
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has signed a new contract with the club until 2027.
The 33-year-old's previous deal was set to expire in 2026.
The Athletic reported earlier this month that Courtois was expected to sign a contract extension this summer.
Courtois' two-year contract, which puts him on an increased salary, marks a significant departure from Madrid's policy of giving players over 30 year-to-year deals.

He is set to become the second Madrid player to sign a new contract with the club this summer, after defender Raul Asencio extended his deal with the club through to 2031.
Courtois has been with Madrid since 2018, when he joined from Premier League side Chelsea. He has made 288 appearances for the club, keeping 113 clean sheets and winning three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.
He sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in August 2023 that caused him to miss the majority of the season, though he returned towards the end of the campaign and started the 2-0 Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund in June 2024.
Courtois' performances have come under increased scrutiny recently after an error in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona led to a Ferran Torres goal, with Madrid going on to lose 3-2.
However, he received plaudits at this summer's Club World Cup in the United States, where Madrid reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.
'Well, I thought we are so lucky that we have Thibaut in goal,' head coach Xabi Alonso said after Madrid's 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16. 'He is one of those keepers who makes you win games, and today he has been so decisive. He's a great influence, so we can be thrilled that we can have Thibaut in goal for us.'

Stoke City old boy lands huge Premier League transfer

A former Stoke City shot-stopper has landed a huge move to the Premier League, it has been announced. Angus Gunn, who played between the sticks at The Potters during a loan spell in the 2020/2021 season, signed for Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. The 29-year-old arrives as a free agent after his contract at Championship side Norwich City expired at the end of last season. Speaking to Forest's media team, he said: "I am really happy to be here. This is a historic club on an exciting journey and I'm looking forward to being a part of it and getting to work. "I'm joining a good group of keepers, and I believe my experience will add something to the team. I can't wait to get going." Chief football officer Ross Wilson added: "We are pleased to welcome Angus to Nottingham Forest today. "He joins a strong goalkeeping department and adds his experience to the group. 'I know how much Matz Sels has enjoyed his work with Rui Barbosa, and I'm sure Angus will enjoy that same coaching and support as he settles into the club." Gunn arrived at Stoke City on loan from Southampton in 2020 as their replacement for Jack Butland who left for Crystal Palace. He made his debut in October against Swansea City, coming on as a half-time substitute for the injured Adam Davies. The rest of his only season at the bet265 Stadium was disrupted with injuries, meaning he returned to the Saints at the end of the season. Speaking to the BBC about his sudden departure from Norwich earlier this summer, Gunn explained: "There wasn't a reason that I got. "Obviously the club just want to go down a different route and I accept that and appreciate that. As a fan and player, I would've liked a conversation to see what we could do. "But I'm a professional as well and I know what I'm worth and if this club is not going to align with that then I'm happy to go elsewhere. "For me to achieve what I've achieved here and play 172 games, I'm just happy I'm making my family proud."

Plymouth handed striker injury boost ahead of Bolton clash

Plymouth Argyle are expected to have striker Bim Pepple back available for their trip to Wanderers Pepple, who joined the Pilgrims over the summer, missed the opening day defeat against Barnsley due to injury. In his absence, midfielder Caleb Watts played up front and managed to get on the scoresheet. Watts also had a goal disallowed, although his efforts proved in vain as Tom Cleverley's tenure began with defeat at Home Park. "We will have Bim available for next weekend, we have missed him," Cleverley told Plymouth Live after the opener. Watts is another player who joined Plymouth this summer following their relegation from the Championship. When asked why he selected the former Exeter man to lead the attack, Cleverley replied: "The game is always about in possession and out of possession. When we think of our number nine, in possession can he score goals is always the first thing. READ MORE: Why Wanderers Women must be ready for 'fresh slate' this season "Out of possession you won't find a better centre-forward. The way he presses, he gives us control that way. 'We went back over his old footage, can he makes those channel runs, can he play on the shoulder, does he know where to be inside the box and he ticked all those boxes. "Malachi [Boateng] has had a great pre-season and freeing Caleb high up the pitch meant I could get Malachi in the team as well, that was important to me.' Owen Oseni is another attacking option in the Plymouth squad but Cleverley opted to introduce the 22-year-old from the bench following his switch from St Mirren. "We are certainly not disregarding Owen,' the former Watford boss insisted. 'He's a natural centre-forward but we are asking a lot of him this early in his Argyle career to be our number nine and take that responsibility. 'There is a lot of development left in him that one day we hope he can be. It has just come a little bit too soon for him."
