Arunachal Cong chief meets Kharge, seeks support on critical state issues
2
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bosiram Siram on Thursday met Congress president
Mallikarjun Kharge
in New Delhi and sought the party's support on several critical issues affecting the frontier state.
During the meeting, Siram sought the party's support on the need to amend Article 371(H), opposition to the proposed 11,000MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), and the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
The APCC also submitted a memorandum outlining concerns over what it termed as the "inadequate" constitutional safeguards provided under Article 371(H) of the Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Act, 1986.
The provision, Siram said, fails to protect tribal customs, land ownership rights and the interests of indigenous communities in terms of natural resource management. He contrasted this with stronger protections available to neighbouring states such as Nagaland and Mizoram under Articles 371(A) and 371(G) and urged the party to push for constitutional amendments.
Raising the alarm over the proposed SUMP, Siram informed Kharge that the 11,000-MW mega dam with a proposed height of over 300 metres poses a serious threat to the ecology, cultural heritage, and demographics of the Siang region.

He warned that more than 27 villages could be submerged, displacing nearly 1.5 lakh indigenous people, and leading to irreversible environmental damage. He flagged concerns over the use of Central Armed Police Forces to push forward survey and drilling activities without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of local communities — a move he described as reminiscent of "colonial-style dominance".
While reiterating the Congress' commitment to development, he maintained that such projects should not come at the cost of indigenous lives, livelihoods, and heritage. "We are not against development, but we are against destructive development," he said.
Siram further called for the rollback of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and the reinstatement of the OPS, arguing that the NPS leaves govt employees vulnerable to market fluctuations and fails to guarantee post-retirement security.

OPS keeps options open for alliance, asks followers to expose BJP, DMK
CHENNAI: Keeping his options open for alliance for facing 2026 election, former chief minister O Panneerselvam on Sunday directed his followers not to speculate about alliance. However, OPS asked his followers to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the central government' as well as the problems faced by the people from the DMK government. This statement of Panneerselvam indicates that he is weighing his options for the poll alliance. A few days ago, after holding discussions with Chief Minister M K Stalin for about 30 minutes, he triggered speculations about aligning with the DMK with his remarks: 'There are no permanent foes or friends in politics. That has been the history. When the elections approach, anything can happen.' In a statement, Panneerselvam said after the demise of former CM J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK has been losing its credibility among the people, facing recurring defeats at the hustings. 'We have been struggling to retrieve the AIADMK from a 'group of betrayers' by establishing the AIADMK Cadres' Rights Retrieval Committee with the hope to win the cases pending before the courts,' he added. Panneerselvam directed his supporters to organise public meetings to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the centre' and the problems faced by the people from the current regime in the state, besides how the AIADMK is being led on a destructive path. However, he did not name Edappadi K Palaniswami. Meanwhile, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran on Sunday told the media that the national leaders of the BJP in New Delhi should make efforts to bring Panneerselvam back into the NDA-fold. Dhinakaran also said Panneerselvam should withdraw his decision to leave the NDA. Talking to reporters in Chennai and Madurai, Panneerselvam showed the messages he sent to BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran about his wish to meet PM Narendra Modi, who visited Tamil Nadu recently. Already, Nagenthran had said that he indeed approached Panneerselvam a day ahead of the PM's visit to TN, but the latter could not be reached. TTV bats for OPS AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran said BJP's national leaders in Delhi should make efforts to bring Panneerselvam back into the NDA. Dhinakaran also said Panneerselvam should withdraw his decision to leave the alliance

'Really horrible war': Trump tells Russia to 'get deal where people stop getting killed'; again takes credit for India-Pakistan ceasefire
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US counterpart Donald Trump (File Image) US President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested a new way for Russia to avoid the sanctions, and that is to get a deal "where people stop getting killed." Trump on Friday warned Russia with new sanctions over the Ukraine war. He said, "Russia -- I think it's disgusting what they're doing. I think it's disgusting," AFP quoted Trump saying. "We're going to put sanctions. I don't know that sanctions bother him," he added. While talking with reporters, Trump said that in both the countries Russia and Ukraine a lot of people are being killed. He claimed that in Ukraine the number of deaths are lower than Russia. "Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed. They had a number that just came out that a tremendous number of Russian soldiers are being killed. And likewise Ukraine, a lower number, but still thousands and thousands of people. And now we're adding towns where they're being hit by missiles. So it's a lot of people being killed in that ridiculous war," Trump said. Trump again took the credit for stopping the war between India and Pakistan which Indian officials have already denied in all the public platforms. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo However, Trump seems to stick to his claims. He not only took the credit for India-Pakistan war, but also said that he stopped Cambodia Thailand, and Congo-Rwanada. "And, you know, we stopped. We stopped a lot of countries from war. India and Pakistan, we stopped a lot of countries. And we're going to get that one stopped, too, somehow. We're going to get that one stop. That's a really horrible war. You heard about Cambodia and Thailand. We got that one done. We got the Congo, which was going on for 31 years. Rwanda, that one's done. We stopped a lot of wars," Trump said. "This is the one we seem to be mission be the easiest to stop. And it's not. I mean, Rwanda and Congo were going on 31 years, and I got it stopped. Eight million people dead. At least that's what they have. But I think the number is much higher. And the leaders of each country, Rwanda and the Congo, they were great. They were great and they wanted it stopped. 31 years it went on. We stopped a lot of wars. Serbia, Kosovo was going to be happening, and I don't believe it will now. So we stopped. That would do," he added. Since May 10, Trump has claimed multiple times that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after US-mediated talks. However, officials have firmly denied any US involvement in the recent ceasefire. Even in the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar refuted Trump's claims and said that there was no foreign mediation.

South Korea starts removing anti-North Korean loudspeakers on border
South Korean authorities began removing on Monday loudspeakers blaring anti-North Korea broadcasts along the country's border, Seoul's defence ministry said, as the new government of President Lee Jae Myung seeks to ease tensions with Pyongyang. Shortly after he took office in June, Lee's administration switched off propaganda broadcasts criticizing the North Korean regime as it looks to revive stalled dialogue with its neighbour.
