Davide Ancelotti to Rangers latest as further talks scheduled

The National24-05-2025

It's understood Rangers will not appoint the new manager by the end of the week despite vast speculation over Steven Gerrard or Ancelotti taking over.
Instead, as reported by The Rangers Review, further discussions will take place with Ancelotti over the position.
Reports in Spain had suggested Ancelotti was close to committing himself to Rangers, but it's thought that is not accurate.
The coach, son of Carlo Ancelotti, is highly-regarded at Rangers and a candidate to become the new manager but the process is not close to being finalised.
Ancelotti will join his father at Brazil for the matches against Ecuador and Paraguay next month but reports he will stay on as a coach and reject the opportunity to make his own way as a manager are wide of the mark.
It's expected Ancelotti will receive offers this summer from European clubs, but the highly-rated coach is thought to be excited by the project at Ibrox.

On Instagram, Ancelotti teased a "new phase" as he confirmed his exit from Real Madrid. He posted: "After 4 years... it's time to say goodbye.
"It's not easy to put into words what leaving Real Madrid means. This club is not just history, it's demand, it's greatness, it's a family.
"I have been fortunate and honored to live it from the inside, to grow as a person and as a coach in a unique environment.
"Thank you to the players for teaching me every day, to the staff for sharing so many hours of work and passion, and to all the people at the club who make possible what the world sees every week.
"And thanks, of course, to the fans. Being part of Real Madrid means living with the pressure of always winning... and with the privilege of feeling your support all over the world.
"Start a new phase for me. With excitement, with respect, and with the desire to apply everything I have learned here. Thank you Real Madrid. See you soon. 🤍"

Iwata in key Rodgers admission as reason for Celtic exit revealed

The midfielder completed a deadline day switch to the English third-tier outfit. Iwata has thrived in his first year south of the border, scoring eight goals and finding himself nominated for League One's Player of the Season award. Read more: He recently lifted the lid on his Celtic exit, admitting that he had no knowledge of Brendan Rodgers when he rejoined the club. "Manager Rodgers was a famous coach in Scotland, but I didn't know of him at all," Iwata told Soccer Digest Web. "At first, I wondered, 'What kind of person is he?' The team actually got going, and the football they were trying to play was interesting. "But there were some areas where I wasn't able to fully showcase myself. It was partly because there was an absolute player in Callum McGregor in the same position, but honestly, I feel like I could have done more. "For players in the front line, the numbers are clear, but my strengths are my one-on-one strengths and my ability to steal the ball. "At Celtic, it's difficult to show that. The teams that are overwhelmingly strong in Scotland always have the ball and take the lead. "I would take it positively that I was able to concentrate on the offensive side, but I can't show my strengths much and I don't get much playing time. "The level of the Scottish first division is a little lower than the top five European leagues, so I often felt that it was a difficult environment for me." The 28-year-old's lack of minutes, along with his family life, was a key factor in his exit: "I wasn't impatient, but more than that, I couldn't help but feel the regret that I, a soccer player, wasn't playing in the games," he said. "At that time, I had a very strong desire to play soccer. Seeing my wife taking care of our children in a foreign country where I was not familiar with them, cooking meals and doing housework, I couldn't help but feel the emotion. "Birmingham made me an offer as soon as the off-season began, and they patiently waited until August 31st, the final day for transfers. "I thought to myself, 'If they feel that way about me, I want to go,' and immediately packed my bags and headed for my new home. I didn't have any negative feelings about it being in the third division, and my biggest motivation at the time was wanting to show my family that I was working hard. "In addition, the manager, Chris Davies, had previously been a coach at Celtic and had recently been a coach under Ange at Tottenham. "The two managers had heard about me and offered me the position with confidence that we could work together, so I was able to go with peace of mind." Birmingham won League One last term, and Iwata will play his football in the Championship in the forthcoming 2025/26 season.

Rangers ‘take next step in Conor Coady pursuit' as Russell Martin makes 10-cap England star a top priority

The 10-cap England star is believed to be one of Russell Martin's top transfer targets as he aims to complete some quick-fire deals after taking over as Rangers boss. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell hinted at Martin's first press conference that the club will be looking for experienced players to join their squad - and Coady ticks those boxes. And the Daily Record now claim the Light Blues have opened talks with the Foxes over his availability. Coady is a versatile player who can operate in midfield or as a ball-playing centre-back. Martin's philosophy is all about playing out from the back so he could slot into the manager's system very well. Coady still has a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium but will have to take a cut after their relegation to the second tier. The Foxes will want to cut their wage bill but Coady's future at the club is currently unclear. It's particularly complicated by the fact there are still question marks over Ruud van Nistelrooy's future as well. Meanwhile, Rangers are also chasing Israel forward Dor Turgeman. Turgeman is currently away with Israel on international duty but Thelwell are keen to do quick business for the attacker. The Rangers manager is also a long-term fan of his former Swansea defender Harry Darling. The centre half is set to become a free agent and but the Light Blues will face a fight to land him. Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo over Ballon d'Or claim

Franck Ribery has hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo after the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward claimed that players need to win the Champions League in order to be in contention for the Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo has won the Ballon d'Or five times during his career, second only to Lionel Messi, who has won the award eight times. Ribery, meanwhile, did not win the Ballon d'Or during his career and the closest he came was a third-placed finish behind second-placed Messi and the winner Ronaldo in 2013. The former France international was tipped to pull off a huge upset by beating Ronaldo and Messi to the award after he won five trophies with Bayern Munich that year, including the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Ribery was also named UEFA's Best Player in Europe off the back of his impressive performances for Bayern. But it was Ronaldo who won the award despite failing to win a trophy with Real Madrid in 2013, although he did score 66 goals in 56 appearances. Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, Ronaldo was asked about this year's race to win the Ballon d'Or and the 40-year-old insisted that only Champions League winners should be picking up the individual award. 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win,' Ronaldo said. 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. 'But there is no consensus. I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. 'Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' However, Ribery hit back at Ronaldo's comments on social media as he posted a message on Instagram which read: 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?' More Trending Ribery's message was accompanied by three laughing emojis. In an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in 2022, Ribery criticised the decision to give the Ballon d'Or to Ronaldo in 2013. 'It was unfair,' Ribery said. 'It was an incredible season for me and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice.'
