
The Surprising Way That People Fuel Their Own Impostor Syndrome

What is impostor syndrome?
Anytime you're doing something you've never done before, or your situation changes dramatically, it's the job of your identity to ask the question "is this safe?" and "should I have it?" If you don't have limiting beliefs about your worthiness, then you may still get a slightly heightened feeling of apprehension at times. But generally speaking, you should be ok as long as you stay grounded, focus on small steps, and acknowledge the wins as you go.
For this first type of impostor syndrome, you may also hear your inner critic giving you intrusive thoughts about if you're good enough, or if you're able to sustain it. The key difference is that you can fairly quickly catch and answer these thoughts with some self-awareness and courage, so they won't last very long, and in fact, the faster you get into action-taking mode, the less of an effect they will have. For many people, simply getting started cures their impostor syndrome thoughts, and they are free to do what they need to do.
When impostor syndrome won't go away.
The second kind of impostor syndrome is fuelled by identity. This is the one that causes the worst cases of impostor syndrome, and why much of the advice doesn't seem to work for you. When it comes to identity-fuelled impostor syndrome, you still decide to do something new and important to you, and it still triggers the same "is this safe?", "is this for me?" internal checks. The only difference now is that this time, the answer that your deeper beliefs and stories send back is: "Absolutely not, are you crazy?! - Who do you think you are for wanting something like this? This is far too nice... Why would you think you could have anything this good?" And it's almost always supported by the iron-clad evidence of: "We've never had it before."
But that's true of literally everything you have ever achieved. Anything you currently have in your life right now, there was once a time you didn't have that, so never let that hold you back. That said, if you are fortunate enough to at least make some progress, what people find is the more you learn, the more you realise how much you don't yet know - which only makes the feeling of not having enough to work with so much worse. So when you try to use positive thinking and force to make yourself do the things, you're really just pushing against yourself. This means the harder you force things, and the more pressure you add, the more your identity's resistance will push back. This is what many people describe as feeling stuck.
What actually works.
OK, so now we know it's not about forcing yourself to do the things, and the old ways aren't working for you anymore because it's your identity that is stopping you from moving forward with confidence. On a deeper level, a part of you doesn't feel good enough, and is using old beliefs and comparisons to support that feeling. When we consider that, we can work on reversing the feeling.
1. Ground yourself in safety and trust
Since impostor syndrome is mostly fuelled by insecurities and comparisons to others, the fastest way to get your power back is to reverse your focus back to yourself, and disregard all other people, at least temporarily.
This is also where we double down on love and worth. Where you feel into your body and send yourself the purest forms of love, that maybe you never had before, but you can allow yourself to receive it now. To anchor into your body, physically reassure yourself through words and touch, and connect to the sensations that your body is giving you. It's here where you create safety and security within yourself. You may need some support from a professional coach or therapist to help you with this if you have never or rarely felt safe in your body before. Once that's done, you can build up trust by doing small things and acknowledging yourself as you go to remove doubts and build confidence.
2. Directly challenge old beliefs
As mentioned earlier, impostor syndrome is made of old beliefs that don't serve you. It's these beliefs that your identity is measuring you against, so once you're in a safe and secure state of being, it's these beliefs that we're going to change. To do that, first follow the "If/Then formula" to discover the specific story that your subconscious is running to keep you stuck in self doubt. What you're looking for is a story that reflects a deeper fear or limiting belief. It may not be rational, in fact, it rarely is rational, but it's whatever comes through and you feel in your body that part of you might believe it.
For example,
"If I do this [big scary thing], then it will hurt me by [outcome I absolutely don't want], and I don't want that to happen" or "If I allow myself to fully trust [myself or someone else], then it could hurt me by [some betrayal, rejection, failure, etc], and I don't want that to happen"
This story will show you the deeper belief and fear, and once you can see the belief, you can start to challenge it and work to replace it with more positive and empowering beliefs.
3. Decide who you are and what you're capable of.
Finally, we take the last step. After we have cultivated safety in the body, and you are now the primary provider of safety and love in your life. We have isolated specific beliefs and stories and brought them into higher awareness. Now is the time we make some powerful decisions that can carry us through and into our best life. The word "decision" literally means "to cut away", so that's what I want you to do. I would like you to decide now that you are going to fully believe in yourself, that you don't need to know if it will be successful before you start, because you will decide now to take the leap of faith in yourself and do the thing.
I'm not promising that it won't be scary, but that's why you decide again and again, as many times as you need to, that you are good enough, and you can find a way to make your visions come true. Because it's in that certainty, that your greatness will finally be allowed to shine.

German sandal and clog brand Birkenstock has enjoyed strong consumer demand with little pushback from U.S. retailers since hiking prices at the start of July, its chief executive said on Thursday. As brands raise prices and cut costs to mitigate the impact of higher U.S. tariffs on their imported products, a key question is the extent to which consumers will be put off and buy less, or simply walk away from purchases. Comments from Birkenstock, Bugaboo, Coach, Ralph Lauren and other brands at the premium end of the market suggest that, so far, affluent consumers are shrugging off price hikes. "We saw no pushback or cancellations following the July 1st price increases implemented in response to tariffs," Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reichert told analysts on a call, adding demand for the brand has been "tremendously strong." Bank of America, the largest consumer facing U.S. bank, said this week that middle- and upper-income earners spent more on their credit cards in July than the same month last year. In contrast, spending among the lowest income bracket remained flat, the bank found. Overall U.S. consumer spending may stay strong, Bank of America said, as long as higher-income individuals keep spending. Lower-income earners account for only 15% of all U.S. consumer spending, according to Bank of America. However, Procter & Gamble, maker of Tide detergent, reported signs of spending cutbacks among higher-income consumers, indicating that shoppers may be becoming more selective with their purchases. Bugaboo, a Netherlands-based maker of expensive baby gear, also raised prices on its strollers, high chairs and play pens by $50-$300 in May because of U.S. tariffs. Retailers were open and accepting. "In general we did not see any pushback. They are like us. They understand it is a fluid situation," Chief Commercial Officer for North America, Jeanelle Teves, said. Bugaboo manufactures in China and sells strollers for more than $1,000 at Target, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and independent mom and pop stores. Coach handbags also remain in strong demand despite a gloomier economic outlook: the brand drew in more than 4.6 million new customers in North America this year, many of whom are Gen Z and millennials, Tapestry CEO Joanne Kuvoiserat said on Thursday. Coach, whose popular Tabby shoulder bags retail for $350, will maintain its operating profit margin despite the pressure of tariffs, Kuvoiserat said. Ralph Lauren, meanwhile, raised its annual revenue forecast as shoppers snapped up items like its $398 Polo Bear sweaters. But consumers' behavior in the coming months remains hard to predict, CEO Patrice Louvet highlighted on a conference call with analysts. "The bigger unknown here today is the price sensitivity and how the consumer reacts to the broader pricing environment. So that's what we're watching very closely as we head into the second half." Let's be real: Most founders don't need more marketing tactics. There is a ton of content out there about how to handle your marketing — so much that it's overwhelming. Marketing also accounts for a large part of business budgets, adding up to nearly 10% of the cost for the average business. It's easy to chase trends, try to be on every platform, run ads without understanding ROI and slap together messaging that changes every other week. When you do that, it just leads to more confusion for your audience and usually, a waste of money. Overcomplicated marketing strategies generally come from a good place — founders want to grow. But in trying to do everything, they end up doing nothing well. Let's talk about why this happens and how to simplify your marketing so it actually works. The most common thing I see in small business owners is a sense of "shiny object" syndrome. When a business owner sees a new tactic pop up on Instagram or their peer swears by a niche funnel, too often, they just start rebuilding their whole strategy around it. Even more importantly, too many business owners get into this situation and then have no data tracking set up. Trying new things is good, but how will you know if it worked or not? Gut feeling is definitely not enough when it comes to determining your marketing spend, and if you are too busy throwing too many things at the wall, you likely aren't setting up proper tracking, so those experiments aren't telling you much in the end. If any of that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Let's break down what a simpler, more effective marketing strategy might look like. Simple marketing strategies often outperform complex ones The best marketing strategies are clear, consistent and rooted in your actual business goals. They don't try to do everything, and instead focus on doing the right things well, consistently and with proper tracking. To start, define your one core message. You should be able to clearly articulate what you do, who it's for and why it matters. If you can't say it in a sentence, your audience won't get it either. Next, establish a consistent cadence that is realistic for you. Whether it's weekly emails, biweekly blogs or daily Instagram stories, consistency beats perfection every time. Resist the temptation to set too ambitious of a goal, if you realistically might not meet it. Setting a realistic goal sets up a habit, and that can build much more easily from there. Finally, establish a feedback loop. Your marketing should be a living system. You put out a message, you watch how it performs, and you adjust accordingly. For whatever you are trying, establish a KPI that defines if it is working, and monitor it. Be willing to cut when it's not working, and double down when it is. Most importantly, simple marketing is sustainable. This sets up the foundation for you to continue to grow. You don't need a fancy dashboard or expensive analytics software to do this. You just need to start with a few key questions: Where are your leads coming from? Look at your clients who came in as prospects in the last 30-90 days, and break them down by where they came from. If you aren't sure, this is a chance to pause and add more lead tracking into your marketing tech before moving on to the next point. What percentage of those leads turn into paying clients? Do the same exercise as the above, but only with those who bought. How much did you spend on each of these channels? This includes any labor spend working on your marketing, tech costs, ad spend, event entrance costs and more. Do your best to break that down by lead channel. What's the lifetime value of a client? Look at your clients from the last six months or so and their average spend. This is the value of the client to your business. These numbers will tell you more than any guru's playbook ever could. One of the most common trends to look at is where you're investing time and money versus where you're getting leads. For example, if you're pouring time into Instagram but your conversions are all coming from referral emails, that's a signal to double down on email and consider refreshing or cutting back on your Instagram strategy. The second thing to consider is the lifetime value of your clients as compared to the cost of a lead. If you're getting leads from paid ads but they are costing you two times as much as their lifetime value, it's very likely you need a paid ads refresh. Once you have this kind of clarity, you can market smarter, not harder. You don't need a 42-step funnel or three different types of lead magnets to make this work. You just need a clear offer, a consistent cadence and a feedback loop. It's easy to think more marketing equals more growth, but if that "more" isn't strategic, it's likely not serving you.
