India enters quantum era with breakthrough in free-space secure communication

India has entered a new quantum era by successfully demonstrating an experimental advancement through DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) and IIT Delhi. The free-space quantum secure communication using quantum entanglement over more than one kilometre was achieved via a free-space optical link established on the IIT Delhi campus.The experiment attained a secure key rate of nearly 240 bits per second with a quantum bit error rate of less than 7 per cent. This entanglement-assisted quantum secure communication paves the way for real-time applications in quantum cybersecurity, including long-distance Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the development of quantum networks, and the future quantum internet.advertisementUnder the project 'Design and development of photonic technologies for free space QKD', sanctioned by Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management (DFTM), DRDO, the demonstration was given by Prof Bhaskar Kanseri's research group in the presence of several dignitaries, including the DRDO DG Director SAG, Director DFTM, Dean (R&D) IIT Delhi, Director (DIA-CoE) and DRDO laboratory scientists.
Quantum entanglement-based QKD offers several significant advantages over the traditional prepare-and-measure method by enhancing both security and functionality. Even if devices are compromised or imperfect, the use of quantum entanglement ensures the security of key distribution.Any attempt to measure or intercept the entangled photons disturbs the quantum state, allowing authorised users to detect the presence of an eavesdropper.Quantum communication provides fundamentally unbreakable encryption, making it a dual-use technology with applications in securing data in strategic sectors such as defence, finance and telecommunications, as well as in protecting national security-related communications.advertisementFree-space QKD eliminates the need to lay optical fibres, which can be both disruptive and expensive, especially in challenging terrains and dense urban environments.Earlier, India's first intercity quantum communication link between Vindhyachal and Prayagraj in 2022, using commercial-grade underground dark optical fibre, was demonstrated by DRDO scientists along with Prof Bhaskar's team. Last year, the team successfully distributed quantum keys using entanglement over a 100 km spool of telecom-grade optical fiber in another DRDO-supported project.These technologies are being developed through DRDO-Industry-Academia - Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs) - an initiative of DRDO, where 15 Centres of Excellence have been established at premier academic institutes like IITs, IISc and universities for the development of cutting-edge defence technologies.Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and IIT Delhi for this landmark achievement, saying that India entered a new quantum era of secure communication which will be a game-changer in future warfare.

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): In what would be a big success for indigenous weapon systems, the Indian Air Force is looking to acquire an advanced version of the Indigenous Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, which would be fitted on almost the entire fighter jet fleet of the force, including the Su-30 MKI. A proposal from the Indian Air Force to get the satellite-guided version of the SAAW air launched glide bomb is expected to be discussed by the Defence Ministry soon. This would be able to hit targets with accuracy at 100 Km strike range, defence sources told ANI. SAAW, an indigenously designed and developed 120 kg class smart weapon developed by DRDO, is capable of engaging ground targets with high precision up to a range of 100 kms. The lightweight high precision guided bomb is one of the world-class weapons systems. SAAW is indigenously designed and developed by DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad has been developed with an aim of engaging ground enemy airfield assets such as radars, bunkers, taxi tracks, and runways etc. The stand off weapon is similar to the stand off weapons used in the Balakot air strikes on targets in Pakistan. The proposal is coming up for discussion at a time when the Indian forces are looking for long range stand off weapon systems and have tasted success in a big way during Operation Sindoor against Pakistani terror and military targets. The SAAW is one of the successful projects carried out by the DRDO. The DRDO has also offered the SAAW missiles to the defence forces under the emergency procurement process to equip the forces rapidly for future conflicts. The Indian Air Force is looking to equip itself with multiple long-range weapon systems, including missiles and other systems. (ANI)

Samsung R&D Institute, Noida (SRI-N) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras with a focus on pioneering advancements in AI for Indian languages, HealthTech and emerging areas such as Generative AI. The partnership is aimed at driving collaborative research, accelerate technology development, and nurture future-ready talent. The five-year MoU was signed by Kyungyun Roo, Managing Director, SRI-N and Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, a press statement informed. Highlighting about this partnership, SRI-N Managing Director Kyungyun Roo said that the collaboration with IIT Madras marks an important step towards co-creating solutions that are meaningful, inclusive, and future-ready. 'Together, we aim to enhance the Galaxy AI ecosystem with deeper integration of Indian regional languages and contribute to breaking language barriers across the country.
