Residents raise garbage disposal issues even as new agency streamlines waste management operations in Puducherry
After several residential neighbourhoods in the town and suburbs of Puducherry faced problems in timely removal of solid waste over the past few weeks, the new agency involved in collection, transportation, and processing of garbage seems to be getting its act together in streamlining its operations across the city. Green Warrior, the Tamil Nadu-based firm, had taken over garbage management in Puducherry from Swachatha Corporation last month. In the initial weeks, residents complained of conservancy workers not maintaining fixed schedule for waste collection from their localities and about lack of bins in the streets to dispose garbage. 'The workers do not follow any fixed time for collecting waste from houses. On one day, they come early in the morning, and on another, they arrive quite late. So, the office-goers find it difficult to dispose garbage. If we keep the waste near the gate, dogs and cattle rummage through the covers, littering the entire area,' Bhaskar, a resident of Lawspet said. The municipality should direct the agency to place large bins in select areas for the time being so that residents could dump the waste in case of workers not turning up on time, he said. Such problems were being reported at the Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipalities. According to an employee of Oulgaret Municipality, the civic body has received complaints pertaining to garbage collection. 'We have also served notice to the agency asking them to rectify the shortcomings. The agency has many vehicles, of which around 100 are battery operated and finding people to operate these vehicles was difficult. These are teething issues and will be addressed shortly,' the employee said. The idea behind not keeping bins on the streets was to promote door-to-door collection, said S. Sakthivel, Director of Local Administration Department. 'The agency has been tasked with the job of door-to-door collection so that household waste does not come to the streets. Till the agency streamlines the collection process, we may ask them to place more bins. Another problem with keeping bins is that people do not often drop the waste inside the bins but throw them around the bins. It creates more problems for the workers,' he said.

Cheating case against deputy superintendent of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad in Rs 2 crore land scam
Hyderabad: On the directions of a local court, Banjara Hills police have registered an FIR against the deputy superintendent of NIMS, Dr Nori Lakshmi Bhaskar, and others for allegedly cheating a Rajahmundry-based doctor of over ₹2 crore in a land deal. Acting on the orders of the III additional chief judicial magistrate, Nampally, the FIR was registered on July 26 under cheating charges. In his petition, the complainant, Dr V Sree Ramulu (54), alleged that Dr Bhaskar, along with G Siddaiah, then president of Sri Venkateswara Co-operative House Building Society for AP Legislators Ltd in MLA Colony, Banjara Hills, duped him into purchasing land fraudulently. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad According to the FIR, the incident dates back to 2019, when Dr Bhaskar, a college acquaintance of Dr Ramulu, claimed that a 600 square yard plot in MLA Colony was available at a discounted rate of ₹2.5 crore. He allegedly said the land belonged to the cooperative society and that Siddaiah could facilitate the sale as the original allottee was in financial distress. Dr Ramulu said he paid a substantial amount in cash and bank transfers, though only ₹3 lakh was recorded in the 2020 sale deed. However, in Aug 2022, the Registrar of Co-operative Societies annulled the sale, citing the plot as excess land meant for public utilities, and declared it could not be sold to private individuals. When Dr Ramulu demanded a refund, he alleged that Dr Bhaskar threatened to frame him in false cases and claimed to have political backing from top Telangana leaders. After police initially failed to register an FIR on April 22, Ramulu moved court. Following court directions, a case was filed under sections 316, 318, 336, and 338 of the BNS.

68 tanks to be rejuvenated in 3 constituencies
Krishnagiri (Kurnool district): A major irrigation initiative aimed at transforming Rayalaseema into a green belt was formally launched in Kurnool district. The project, considered the brainchild of former minister K E Krishnamurthy, seeks to fill 68 village tanks across Dhone, Pattikonda and Alur Assembly constituencies with water from the Handri-Neeva project. The inauguration ceremony was held at Lakkasagaram village in Krishnagiri mandal on Friday, where Labour Minister Vasamsetty Subhash, along with MLAs, Kotla Jaya Surya Prakash Reddy and K E Shyam Kumar, switched on motors to begin the water release into the tanks. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Subhash stated that the project was originally initiated in 2018–19 under the leadership of former deputy chief minister K E Krishnamurthy. With an allocation of Rs 280 crore, around 70% of the work was completed by 2023–24. He criticised the previous YSRCP government for neglecting the initiative, accusing it of focusing more on corruption and political survival rather than on farmers' welfare and rural development. The Minister highlighted various developmental works taken up in the Pattikonda constituency, including the construction of CC roads and drainage systems worth Rs 15 crore, and the modernisation of an SC hostel at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore. He pointed out that unlike the previous administration, which allegedly mismanaged welfare schemes like Amma Vodi, the current coalition government was delivering on all its Super Six promises. Under the new administration, welfare benefits were being distributed fairly, ensuring every eligible household receives support. Taking a strong dig at the YSRCP, the Minister accused its leadership of attempting to derail investments worth Rs 6 lakh crore into Andhra Pradesh by circulating misleading messages through tools like the 'Bhaskar' software. He stated that the previous government failed to present any meaningful development in five years and was instead focused on destructive politics. Referring to their electoral downfall — winning only 11 seats out of 175 — the Minister remarked that the people have decisively rejected their arrogance. He concluded by expressing hope that the opposition would recover from its political stupor and return to serving the public with sincerity.
