Nathan Lane claims he missed out on big film role because of his sexuality

Independent26-03-2025
Nathan Lane has claimed he missed out on a role in Space Jam because of his sexuality.
The Tony-winner, 69, who shot to fame in The Birdcage – a 1996 comedy about a queer couple forced back in the closet for the sake of their son – was 'terrified' to be outed and didn't come out until 1999.
Lane said he had been hosting the Tony Awards in 1996 when Space Jam's director, Joe Pytka, observed he was 'too gay' to play Michael Jordan 's assistant in the film and cast Wayne Knight instead.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, he said: 'I was up for that part…Apparently the director saw me hosting the Tony Awards and thought that suggested I was too gay to play the part.'
However, Lane claimed he 'didn't really care about' losing out on the role, adding: 'So thank God, I didn't have to do Space Jam.'
He added: 'But I don't know. I'll never know what people say. Homophobia is alive and well, still.'
The Independent has contacted Pytka's representatives for comment.
Elsewhere in the interview, Lane detailed the challenges The Birdcage brought to his career. 'I don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but I can't help but think that it played a part,' he said.
Lane's agent at the time even warned against the actor coming out in case it impacted his chance of scoring roles.
'In the beginning, I never really pursued film,' he said. 'I always thought theatre was a more interesting place to be, because you learn more about acting that way.
'Movies were just to pay the bills so I could keep doing theatre. Then The Birdcage came along. I thought perhaps because of the success of that, it'd lead to other films, but then it didn't. It really didn't.'
He recalled: 'I said to my agent, 'I thought more would happen after The Birdcage. He said, 'Maybe if you weren't so open about your lifestyle, it would have.''
Lane continued: 'And he was an old queen telling me this. So I left him. […] There weren't a lot of opportunities.'
The Birdcage director Mike Nichols then helped Lane to find new representation at CAA.
However, the star admitted he still struggled to reach the success he wanted: 'Hollywood figured out nothing when it comes to me,' he said. 'I wish they'd figured out what to do with me.'
Back in 2023, Lane revealed how Robin Williams, who starred alongside him in The Birdcage, had protected him from questions about his sexuality at the time of the film's release.
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Lane was asked whether he was afraid of being 'typecast' for the role, at which point Williams jumped in and distracted the talk show host.
Lane described the comedian as a 'saint' for the way he'd helped him navigate media attention. 'Robin was just the greatest person,' he said. 'Such a beautiful, sensitive soul and so kind and generous to me.'

Fans 'emotionally wrecked' after first look at acting legend's comeback

Sir Daniel Day-Lewis fans have been delighted by the first look at the acting titan's comeback after an eight-year 'retirement' from the industry. The three-time best actor Oscar-winner – the only performer to achieve such a feat – has returned to make his first movie in nearly a decade after collaborating with his son Ronan Day-Lewis on the project. Anemone was co-written by the father-son duo and will be 27-year-old Ronan's directorial debut, with giddy fans predicting Day-Lewis, 68, will 'emotionally wreck' them with his most powerful and personal performance to date. It's set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, which runs from September 26 to October 13, and in conjunction with the announcement an official still from Anemone has been released. It shows Day-Lewis, rocking short grey hair and a statement moustache, gazing upwards, with co-star Sean Bean in the background. The official description of Anemone on the festival's website describes it as 'an absorbing family drama' and 'an emotional powerhouse'. Set in Northern England, the film follows a middle-aged man (Bean) who leaves his suburban home for 'a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship – one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier'. Anemone also co-stars Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green. 'Daniel Day-Lewis is going to be in another film. The world is healing,' announced @penguinhowler on X, while @barbarismcrit added: 'I'm a simple man. I will watch anything with Daniel Day-Lewis in it.' 'So DDL came out of retirement just to emotionally wreck us, cool cool,' quipped @Giii_014 of what they expected from Anemone and the star's performance, as Sagar Mishra tweeted: 'Daniel Day-Lewis returning under his son's direction – could Anemone be his most personal performance yet?' 'The other actors knowing they are gunning for 2nd place for best actor Oscar,' predicted another fan, following the Irish performer's wins for My Left Foot in 1990, There Will Be Blood in 2008 and Lincoln in 2013. He was also nominated in 2018 for his last performance as dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, while there were two further nominations over the years for In the Name of the Father and Gangs of New York. 'Using your nepotism to bring Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement is the correct and right thing to do,' quipped Jay of him being directed by his own son, while Niklander added: 'Nepotism is bad unless your dad is Daniel Day-Lewis.' 'I can't even be mad, like yeah if Daniel Day-Lewis was my dad I'd 100% use my nepotism to get him to star in my film. Instant win,' joked someone else. His shock retirement from the screen was announced out of the blue via a message from his then-publicist Leslee Dart in 2017. 'Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years,' the statement read. 'This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.' Since then, the star has rarely been spotted out and about. However, he did make an exception for his old friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese, appearing at an awards event in support of the filmmaker's movie Killers of the Flower Moon in January 2024. The actor, who starred in Scorsese's Gangs Of New York (2002) and The Age Of Innocence (1993), called working with the director 'one of the greatest joys and unexpected privileges of my life'. Scorsese joked that he was hoping to coax him out of retirement for one final film together, but he's been beaten to it by the star's son. More Trending He shares Ronan and younger son Cashel, 23, with filmmaker and author wife Rebecca Miller, who is the daughter of famous American playwright Arthur Miller. He is also father to actor Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis, 30, with award-winning French actress Isabelle Adjani. Anemone is set for a limited US release on October 3, 2025, with a UK release yet to be announced. Got a story? Jennifer Aniston breaks silence on terrifying gate-crashing stalker: 'People are out of their minds'

Jennifer Aniston offered a rare, unguarded look into her private life while reflecting on everything a frightening stalking incident and bizarre dating rumors to the grief of losing longtime friend Matthew Perry. During her vulnerable interview with Vanity Fair, the Friends star, 56, confessed she often wrestles with 'what to and not to share.' This includes finally breaking her silence about Jimmy Wayne Carwyle, the 48-year-old man from Mississippi, who allegedly crashed his car into the gate of her $21 million Bel Air mansion. Prosecutors say he had been sending her emails, voicemails, and social media messages for some time prior to her security detaining him until police arrived. Carwyle, 48, has been charged with felony stalking, vandalism and threatening bodily harm and faces up to three years in jail after what one of Aniston's lawyers called 'a two-year campaign of harassment and stalking'. He has since plead not guilty to felony stalking and felony vandalism, and at press time was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. 'People are out of their minds,' the actress said. 'Who wants to put that energy out there.' She proceeded to stress her security detail, outside her home, is simply 'necessity' and 'not glamorous in any way.' Her longtime pal Sandra Bullock, who endured her own terrifying stalker incident in 2014, stressed those experiences create a fortress mentality. 'It makes me think, "Do I really have to go outside and navigate the world?" … It's ongoing. It's not a one-off.' For both actresses, fears once extended to flying. 'The two of us on a plane, it's the most pathetic thing to look at,' Bullock joked. But during one difficult spring break trip, Aniston put her own fear aside to comfort Bullock. 'She just held onto my hand and goes, "This is just a bump" … I was like, "Who the fuck are you right now?"' she recalled. Aniston says hypnotherapy and calming apps have helped her in the air, but her empathy for others can override her own fear. 'When there's someone in need of being calmed, I have such empathy for it that all of a sudden my fear goes out the window,' the star noted. Since her split from ex-husband Justin Theroux in 2018, Aniston hasn't been publicly linked to any confirmed love interests and rarely talks about her love life to the media. Her friend Jason Bateman, when asked if he's ever played matchmaker for her, admitted to the outlet that he hasn't. 'It's not surprising to me that she's not some serial dater, not because she's overly picky or snobby,' he said. 'You don't need to be some superhero to grab her attention. If you are comfortable in your skin, she gravitates to you. The challenge is for a guy to see past her fame and charisma and presence and beauty—to not be distracted by that—and tune into the stuff at the deep core.' Earlier this year, headlines linked her to The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal after they were photographed outside a West Hollywood restaurant and even to former President Barack Obama, for reasons no one seems quite sure of. The rumor spread so far and wide that Emmy winner even addressed it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! 'Of all the calls you get from your publicist…and then it's that,' she said with a laugh as Kimmel showed her the cover of In Touch, which read 'The Truth About Jen & Barack!' The actress, who insists she knows Michelle Obama better than her husband, recalled dining with the former First Lady just a month prior. During their night out, the actress insisted the subject never came up. 'I don't think anyone really pays attention to reports like that if you're the subject of them,' she mused. Bullock admitted the two of them have tried to trace the origins of such outlandish stories. 'We try to figure out the genesis of where some of these stories come from…but 75 percent of the time, we just cannot. They're literally pulled out of the ether,' the Oscar winner explained. Still, Bullock confessed she understands the fascination with her pal. 'She's so beloved that you go, "I want that person to have their person" even if that person doesn't want a person,' the mother-of-two told the publication. More recently, Aniston has been linked to wellness guru and hypnotherapist Jim Curtis, with reports claiming the two vacationed in Mallorca and Big Sur over the summer. She had previously told Travel + Leisure she tried hypnosis to conquer her fear of flying. While her rep declined to comment to Vanity Fair about the dating rumors, Aniston follows Curtis on social media, has liked his posts and in May shared a photo of his book Shift: Quantum Manifestation Guide: A Workbook for Coding a New Consciousness. Within days of paparazzi shots from the Mallorca trip, also attended by Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka, Curtis's name was splashed across thousands of online stories. While reflecting on her career, Aniston said, 'What helped raise me is something I got to put into the world and help other people. If [Friends] was the only thing on my résumé, I would be very happy and blessed.' The 2021 Friends reunion, she added, served as a final curtain call for the six cast members. In 2023, that tight-knit group suffered a devastating loss when Matthew Perry died from 'the acute effects' of ketamine, with drowning a contributing factor. 'We did everything we could when we could,' Aniston said of efforts to help Perry through his long battle with addiction. She continued: 'But it almost felt like we'd been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there's a part of me that thinks this is better. I'm glad he's out of that pain.'
