La Liga Set for VAR Revolution After Real Madrid Controversy
La Liga Set for VAR Revolution After Real Madrid Controversy
Major changes are coming to La Liga next season as the Spanish Referees Committee prepares to implement revolutionary VAR system aimed at increasing transparency and reducing controversy.
Coach Challenges Now Allowed
According to COPE Radio, the new system'll grant each manager 2 VAR challenge opportunities per match. If the challenge leads to overturning wrong decision, the coach'll retain the right to make another appeal. But if the referee's call's upheld, no additional challenges will be granted.
This move comes after turbulent season that saw Real Madrid's official media attack referees weekly prompting the referees union to file lawsuits against the club.
FIFA and IFAB Greenlight
FIFA referee chief Pierluigi Collina confirmed the system's under close monitoring. Approved by IFAB last March , it could soon become standard in top leagues worldwide.

Chelsea striker Marc Guiu joins promoted Sunderland on loan
SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — Newly promoted Sunderland signed 19-year-old striker Marc Guiu on a season-long loan from Chelsea on Wednesday ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Guiu made 16 appearances for Enzo Maresca's team last season and scored six goals — all in the UEFA Conference League campaign. Chelsea won the third-tier competition. Guiu became the second-youngest player (18 years, 350 days old) to score a hat trick for Chelsea. That feat came in a 5-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers. The Spaniard also played twice in Chelsea's run to the Club World Cup title. 'I see myself as a powerful striker, who can make a difference on and off the ball, and I pride myself on being a natural goalscorer,' he said in Sunderland's announcement. Guiu rose through Barcelona's youth academy and made seven appearances for the Catalan club before joining Chelsea in 2024. Sunderland hosts West Ham at the Stadium of Light on Aug. 16 in its season opener. ___ AP soccer:

Sophie Cunningham fined again, this time four figures, for criticizing referees a second time
Sophie Cunningham did not learn the lesson. Days after she was fined $500 for criticizing referees on a TikTok, she was fined triple that amount for doing so again. In her new podcast, "Show Me Something," Cunningham insinuated that refs "mess up all the time." "If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time. Like, I'm not saying that your job is easy, but when it is a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing?" Cunningham began. "They're just so inconsistent, like that's one thing. If you're on the other team, and you're going to be fouling the s--- out of me, cool. But let me do it to you… I think players across the league, and new fans across the country are like, 'What is going on with the refs?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.' And you fining me $500 is not going to do s---." Cunningham accurately predicted she would get fined. "They fined me $1,500. I'm like, 'This is just the beginning.' I'm like, 'You're kidding,'" Cunningham said on the podcast's most recent episode. "They email our GM, and she pulls me aside and says, 'Sophie, I've got to talk to you,' and this is front of everybody. I'm like, 'What did I do now?' And just smiled, and she goes, 'Hey, they're going to fine you again.' I was like, 'I even told them I credited them that their job was hard.' I did say that. I said that I would not be good at it. I did say that. Like, look at the whole picture. What are we doing? Ugh. But yeah, so I got fined for that." The Indiana Fever guard is in her seventh WNBA season, but she's hit the big time ever since she started a ruckus in defense of Caitlin Clark. Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye and was also pushed to the floor by Marina Mabrey. Cunningham wrapped up Sheldon under the basket on a hard foul in the fourth quarter, and the two were ejected. In 25 games this year, Cunningham is putting up 8.0 points per contest and shooting 41.9% from three-point range.

Just in – Barcelona take away captaincy from Marc-Andre ter Stegen
In a huge development, Catalunya Radio is reporting that Barcelona are stripping Marc-Andre ter Stegen of the club captaincy amid their ongoing standoff. As per the report, manager Hansi Flick will remove Ter Stegen from the captaincy group at the request of the club. Barcelona consider that with disciplinary proceedings open against him, the German goalkeeper can no longer form part of the team's leadership. This decision comes after Ter Stegen refused to authorise the club to submit his medical information to La Liga. The 33-year-old veteran's decision sparked great anger at the club, prompting them to open a disciplinary case against him. Now, the La Liga champions have therefore decided to withdraw his captaincy, viewing the open disciplinary file as incompatible with holding a leadership role. The update has now been confirmed by Mundo Deportivo journalist Fernando Polo as well. No longer captain. (Photo by) This development comes even as Ter Stegen remains firm in his refusal to sign the medical report. There has been no direct talk between the player and the club as he has delegated all communication with the Catalans to his representative. Meanwhile, Barcelona's legal department is working to identify a way to send the necessary medical information to La Liga without the player's consent. The club's aim is to obtain a long-term injury status in order to free up salary space for registering new players. However, even if the Blaugrana do manage to send the documents, La Liga's Medical Commission will not assess Ter Stegen's case without his formal consent. The players' union (AFE) has reached out to the goalkeeper to offer support during this situation. Several Barcelona players had previously come out in support of Ter Stegen continuing as captain. So, it will certainly be interesting to see how the locker room reacts to this huge move by the club.
