Eligibility for the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance has been extended for thousands of households.
The scheme provides a once-off, means tested payment to eligible families towards the cost of school clothing and footwear. The rate of payment for 2025 is €160 for children aged 4 - 11 and €285 for children aged 12 years and over in second level education.
Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary has confirmed eligibility for the scheme is being extended to include children for whom Foster Care Allowance is being paid. It is estimated that up to 2,300 children, for whom Foster Care Allowance is being paid, will now qualify for the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.
Minister Calleary said: 'Foster carers play an essential role in our care system, and I am committed to supporting them. That's why I am really pleased to announce that children for whom Foster Care Allowance is being paid will now be eligible for the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.
'In the Programme for Government, we said that we would examine the Back-to-School eligibility criteria to allow flexibility for foster carers and I am pleased to fulfil this commitment.
"We expect some 2,300 children in foster care will now be eligible for this important allowance and I encourage foster care families to apply online at MyWelfare.'

Mayo school set for major development following multi-million euro investment

The transformative upgrade of the 150-year-old school will also include the demolition of existing buildings on the site. The announcement was made today by Minister Dara Calleary who confirmed that the project has progressed to stage four of architectural planning and will move into the construction phase over the coming weeks. Minister Calleary worked closely with former Minister for Education Norma Foley, and the current Minister Helen McEntee, to advance the building works. He was delighted to confirm the news and said: 'It is a very substantial investment in education in Ballina, a 13 classroom new build school plus accommodation for pupils with special educational needs and the demolition of the existing buildings at the current school site at an estimated cost of over €10 million, 'Scoil Íosa is a wonderful school, blessed with fantastic staff, very dedicated boards of management and vibrant school communities over the years. The physical core of the current building dates back over 150 years - this new build will ensure a proper match of the physical building to the amazing school ethos.' Scoil Íosa is a Catholic school committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and nurturing environment rooted in Christian values. The school prides itself on supporting children with special educational needs, embracing diversity, and delivering a wide range of teaching strategies and techniques to meet the varied learning styles of all students. Michael Tunny the Principle of Scoil Íosa expressed his gratitude: 'Our school has received €10m in funding and we are extremely happy with the news. This is a very much deserved facility for the wonderful children in the Parkside area of Ballina.' Mr Tunny said that in addition to the 13 new classrooms, two specialised classrooms will be created specifically for children with autism. He continued: 'We wish to express our thanks to Minister Dara Calleary, he was our main supporter in terms of achieving this funding.' Minster Calleary added: 'I have worked closely with the school principal Michael Tunney, the Deputy Principal Monica Duffy, board of management chair Christy McDonagh and the staff to progress this and I congratulate them on their work to date. I look forward to works now commencing and completing within the expected timeframe.' The building and demolition works are expected to take 19 months to complete.

Ireland's oldest woman to be laid to rest this Friday after passing away at 108

Ireland's oldest woman, who lived through the War of Independence, the Civil War and World War II, has passed away at the age of 108. Sarah Coyle, who was understood to be Ireland's oldest woman, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday evening, just days away from celebrating her 109th birthday, DublinLive reports. Sarah took the mantle as Ireland's oldest woman earlier this year after Ruby Druce, who was previously Ireland's oldest woman, passed away at the age of 109 in March. Born on July 24, 1916, in Knockatomcoyle, Co Wicklow, Sarah was one of 10 siblings, two of whom also reached over the age of 100. Sarah, whose maiden name was Byrne, married her husband Tom Coyle in the 50s and moved to Drumcondra, where the two lived happily together until he passed away in 1986. Mrs Coyle, who had received eight presidential medals each year after she turned 100, lost her sight when she had turned 40, but this did not stop her love of gardening and she had a keen fondness for radio. Sarah will be dearly missed by her adoring children and son-in-law, her sister, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as all of her extended family and friends. She is pre-deceased by her eight siblings and husband. A reposal will take place at Sarah's daughter's home on Thursday, July 17, from 5pm to 7pm. Removal to St. Brigid's Church, Blanchardstown will take place on Friday morning, July 18, arriving for Requiem Mass at 10am followed by burial in Glasnevin Cemetery. Sarah's Funeral Mass may be viewed online here. Only family flowers are requested. Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.

Thousands of Limerick families urged to check eligibility for government payment

The Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, given by the Department of Social Protection, provides financial support to eligible families with the cost of school uniforms and footwear ahead of the upcoming term. Last year, 6,618 Limerick families received the payment, and a similar number is expected to benefit again this year. The allowance is set at €160 for children aged 4 to 11, and €285 for children aged 12 and over in second-level education. In total, over 126,000 families across Ireland will receive payments this week, covering more than 221,000 children, with more than €47.5 million being distributed. Eligible families who qualify automatically will be notified by post or via their account. Those who have not received a notification are encouraged to apply before the September 30 deadline. Manual applications will be processed and paid once eligibility is confirmed. Welcoming the payments, Minister of State Niall Collins, Limerick County TD, said the scheme offers much-needed support: 'Over 6,000 families in Limerick received these payments last year which demonstrates the extent to which they are really making a difference. 'These back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance payments are a really welcome help to eligible families in meeting the costs associated with children starting and returning to school.' Application details are available through the Department of Social Protection website or
