He was arrested at the swimming pool of his hotel, next to the one where he is said to have forced himself onto the other Brit.
The teenager fled the woman's room after she resisted and screamed, detectives said.
He has since been placed in a juvenile detention centre in the Spanish holiday hotspot.
Before he was remanded he appeared at a youth court and was barred from leaving Spain while the investigation continues.
The ordeal unfolded during 'busy daylight hours' on July 31 according to police, with a source saying it occurred around 3pm.
A spokesperson for Spain's National Police in Tenerife said on Thursday: "Officers have arrested a minor aged 16 as the alleged author of an attempted sex attack on July 31 at a hotel in the municipality of Arona.
"The quick work of officers led to his rapid location and arrest, preventing the possibility of further attacks."
They added: "The incident occurred at the door of one of the rooms of the hotel where the victim, aged 22, was approached by an individual who managed to sneak in behind her.
"She resisted, screaming to raise the alarm, and managing to prevent the attacker from closing the door behind him who reacted by fleeing the scene."
Cops also noted that CCTV cameras enabled them to "reconstruct the events of that day and follow the suspect's movement".

This helped them to locate and arrest the teenager at the pool of the nearby hotel.
The police source said: "Both the teenage boy and the woman are British.
"She was holidaying alone and he was with his family."
Another source said: "The CCTV images police obtained showed this lad appeared to be on the prowl after entering a hotel he wasn't staying at.
"He didn't know the older woman. She was a complete stranger."
It is currently unclear which hotel the alleged attack took place at.
But the ordeal reportedly took place on Avenida de Las Americas in southern Tenerife.
It comes after four men were arrested in Greece over allegations they filmed a British woman having sex before sharing the video via their phones.
Greek cops from Aktio-Vonitsa Police Station conducted the arrests in late July in the Palairos area.
And on July 24, a Brit teenager was allegedly raped in the sea off a popular Greek holiday island.
The 16-year-old girl reported the alleged assault on Monday during a trip with her family.
The alleged attack was said to have happened in broad daylight at Rhodes' Ialysos beach - in front of a hotel packed with guests.
According to Greek outlet Dimokratiki, the girl approached cops with her father around 5.50pm local time.

Urgent warning issued over ‘very convincing' web scams as shoppers conned out of £100s

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHOPPERS have been warned to look out for "very convincing" web scams that are conning people out of hundreds of pounds. There has been a recent rise in criminals creating fake websites for well-known brands, experts say, and many scammers are using AI to help them. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Costco has recently seen a surge in fraudsters impersonating its website Credit: Getty Costco is one of the retailers that has recently been targeted by these criminals, with the wholesale business warning customers to be vigilant when shopping online. Dozens of reviews have appeared on Trustpilot in recent weeks from Costco shoppers who paid for orders but never received them, with some claiming to have bought items costing hundreds of pounds. Costco responded to several customers on the review site, writing: "We were unable to locate an order with the details provided and suspect that the purchase may have been made through a fraudulent website posing as Costco. "Unfortunately, there has been a recent increase in fraudulent websites impersonating Costco." In another Trustpilot response to a customer who had fallen for the scam, it urged shoppers to "check the URL which is displayed when shopping online". It added: "Our site displays at the beginning of the web address." Some Costco shoppers may have lost hundreds of pounds to the scam. In one review, a customer claims they bought a Bosch router table, which are on sale for up to £500 from some online retailers, but had not received it. Costco responded saying their order could not be found and it was likely bought through a fake website. Another customer said they ordered a keter Manor outdoor shed, which retails for over £200 on the high street, and were told by Costco they had likely been scammed. Avoid being ripped off by car hire companies with these four top tips It's not just Costco that has been targeted by fake websites - experts told The Sun that the scam is on the rise. 'Criminals are increasingly creating convincing looking websites that mimic well known retailer that lure shoppers in with seemingly genuine branding and tempting offers," said Jake Moore, global security adviser at ESET. "These sites often harvest lots of personal and payment information or take money without delivering goods." He said they're also becoming "incredibly easy to make" with the use of AI, as it means scammers no longer need to know how to code to create fake websites. "The end results are often near perfect copies too," he said. Starling Bank financial crime specialist Sarah Lenette adds: With the rise of AI, scammers have everything they need to create very convincing retail sites in very little time, which include all of the correct branding, products and relevant offers and deals." One common way you can end up on a fake website is by clicking on a fake ad on social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok or Instagram. "Users then unknowingly find themselves on a site believing they are on the legitimate retailer," Jake says. It comes after a raft of fake Wilko websites offering huge discounts were set up by scammers after the retailer fell into administration in 2023. Cath Kidston and Joules have also been targeted by the scams. How to spot a fake website While scammers have become more sophisticated, there are several ways you can keep an eye out for fake websites when shopping online. Which? Consumer Expert Rob Lilley-Jones says you should avoid any deals that seem "too good to be true" - as they usually are. "Another tell-tale sign of a scam website will be poor spelling and bad grammar," he adds. Look out for any websites that don't have a physical address and a phone number and email address to contact them. "If they don't, it's a red flag," Rob says. He also suggests using a domain checker like to see when the website was set up. "If it's recent, and the company claims to be a well-known one like Costco, it's a scam," he says. Sarah Lenette adds that you should be wary of any URLs for UK retailers that end in .org or .net. You should also avoid clicking on social media ads that you're unsure about, she says. "Always search for the retailer on a search engine and head to them independently, as well as checking for independent reviews on sites such as TrustPilot," she says. Costco was contacted by The Sun but declined to comment. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? A woman was asked by Ibom Air cabin crew to turn off her phone as the plane was heading towards the runway. But she is said to have ignored the request, refusing and insisting she would switch her phone to flight mode instead. When things became more heated, the pilot turned the aircraft back to the terminal at Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The woman was forced to get out of her seat and brought to the front of the plane, where she hit a flight attendant standing in the doorway. In the shocking video, the staff member can be heard saying: "She is hitting me. She is f***ing hitting me." The attendant raises her hands to protect her face from further blows. The incensed passenger shouts: "What did you do?" The passenger is then seen putting on her jacket and being removed from the plane with her luggage. Once outside, security staff were forced to restrain her. The woman shout and swears at airport officials before attempting to attack one. Staff had to lift her onto the airport bus, where she continued to struggle. Ibom Air has imposed a lifetime ban on the passenger, according to local outlet Business Day. A statement by the airline read: 'Ibom Air reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unruly or violent conduct that threatens the safety of passengers, crew, or equipment. "Such behaviour will be met with the strongest possible response, including legal action and permanent restriction from our services." It added that it "commended the bravery and professionalism" of its crew and the support of airport staff and the Nigerian Police. Speaking about the incident, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), reminded passengers that they should respect instructions by cabin crew. He said: "When cabin crew ask you to turn off your phone before take-off or landing, simply comply. "I can't understand why simple routine issues would lead to incidents like this. "Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights." It comes after a brawl recently erupted onboard a flight when some passengers reportedly refused to keep quiet after the lights were dimmed. Shocking footage from an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to China shows several people wrestling in the middle of the aisle. Tensions flared when a man seated behind a row of three young women became furious when they kept 'talking loudly'. He then shouted: "'Shut up... are you stupid? I want to sleep." Footage shows a woman in a green outfit and baseball cap leaning across the seat while repeatedly throwing punches at the man, who cowered beneath the food tray. Desperate AirAsia cabin crew in the company's distinctive red dresses can be seen wrestling with those involved in the fight. 5 The passenger grapples with staff

Nicola Sturgeon still friends with Derek Mackay after scandal

The minister sent a total of 270 messages over Instagram and Facebook between August 2019 and February 2020. The boy was over the age of consent and Mr Mackay broke no laws in the messages he sent, but Ms Sturgeon described them at the time as "unacceptable" and says in her new book they were "inappropriate". Read More: However, in the memoir as quoted in the Scottish Sun, the former First Minister says he remains a friend. Ms Sturgeon writes: "I was back at Bute House when the Sun story went online, late that evening. I felt sick as I read it. 'The messages were published in full and were not open to benign interpretation. "They would be seen by any objective reader as Derek trying to engineer reasons to meet with the boy and to strike up a relationship with him. 'Given the age difference and the power imbalance, it was impossible to describe the exchanges as anything other than inappropriate. I had received and accepted Derek's resignation within the hour. "He had made a serious mistake and, rightly, paid the price. He eventually got his life back on track and, though it would be a few years before I spoke to him again, I still count him as a friend.'
