The Gallivant, East Sussex hotel review
Just a five-minute drive from Rye in East Sussex, you'll find the village of Camber which is home to The Gallivant. Camber Sands is admittedly not the most beautiful beach on the English Coast, but the wide expanse is perfect for a bracing walk in the winter or enjoying the warmer weather in summer, and there's plenty of room for dogs to run around (the beach is open to dogs year-round, although in summer there are some restrictions in terms of area). There's not much in Camber itself, but just down the road in Rye there are plenty of charming shops, cafes and restaurants – be sure to check out the recently refurbished George pub as well as the Fig restaurant. There is a railway station in Rye with regular trains from London St Pancras via Ashford, with a total journey time of roughly one hour 15 minutes.
The vibe
The Gallivant is unassuming from the outside, with a low-level motel structure, but you step into a homely coastal haven. There are plenty of nods to Camber's past, with the owners clearly keen to embrace the East Sussex beachside feel. You'll find exposed wood and brickwork, as well as lots of beach paintings, shells and plants. The communal areas include a cosy snug with books where you can sink into the sofas, as well as seating around a log fire and a Cabin Room, which can be used to take calls or do some work. Teas and coffee are available all day, and the Friday evening I stayed, cake was served at 4pm followed by a complimentary glass of wine and a raclette at 6pm. Outside there's a courtyard with two fire pits, as well as heaters – so it was fully functional (and very cosy) even on a February evening, Plus, staff were only too happy to bring out blankets.
Laid back and friendly, but very thorough. Guest happiness manager Naketa gave us a tour of the property that included a comprehensive rundown of the room and facilities. These are small details that make a big difference – there was no struggling with an awkward lock or wondering how to turn off the radiator. Naketa remained on hand throughout our stay; always utterly charming without being overbearing. There is real attention to detail at The Gallivant: a sleepy tea was waiting for us on our bed when we turned in for the evening, bar staff took time to help pick wines and a board at reception shares all the details for the day (including high tide/low tide, weather and complimentary drinks and snacks in the lounge).
Bed and bath
There are 20 rooms at The Gallivant, all individually decorated and beautifully furnished. These range in size from the cosy Snug Cabin to the Luxury Garden room with a roll-top bath, super king bed (the beds in other rooms are king size) and French doors that lead onto a private deck. All rooms are designed for two people, but the Baby Hampton and Large Hampton rooms have day beds which can be made up for a third person. Many of the rooms have direct access to The Gallivant's well maintained, but wonderfully wild, gardens. Interiors are bright and fresh, and filled with thoughtful details including lots of books. Bathrooms are small, but a number have tubs, and all have Bamford bath products. The 'minibar' features snacks from the local area, as well as a selection of teas and coffees.
Food and drink
Harry's restaurant is a new addition to The Gallivant, with a strong focus on British cuisine, serving dishes such as rabbit leg with ventreche smoked bacon and mustard sauce, and crab with fennel, blood orange and courchamps dressing.
While it shows plenty of promise with locally sourced ingredients and one the largest English wine lists in the country, there appear to be some slight teething issues. On a busy Friday evening, while service was slick, the food came out rather cold. It's also worth noting that there are limited choices for vegetarians and vegans. The roasted garlic and cauliflower soup lacked flavour, and the ricotta gnudi with pumpkin puree was decent enough but perhaps not as special as you'd hope for at somewhere as standout as The Gallivant.
Breakfast was a departure from the traditional cooked affair you may expect at a coastal UK hotel. Each guest receives a 'breakfast tray' with local cheeses, ham, smoked salmon, and a 'breakfast salad' of tomatoes, cucumber and radish, along with granola, roast nuts and seasonal fruits. There's also a 'Recovery Station' of bottomless bloody Marys, which you need to mix yourself. It's an interesting concept, but one that doesn't quite hit the mark if you're after a hearty warm meal before a walk on the beach – possibly more 'Los Angeles coastal' than 'English country coast'.
There is a full cocktail and mocktail list with twists on the classics – including a Sig's Marg (El Rayo tequila, Cointreau and fresh lime juice) and a Romp in the Dunes (Hastings gin, Doppelganger amaro, apple juice and elderflower) – and the wine list is excellent and reasonably priced considering the high quality.
Facilities
The Gallivant has a bright and airy wellness studio where yoga classes are held every morning at 8am, plus a moon rising yoga session that takes place once a month in the evening. When weather allows, 'wild yoga' classes take place on the beach. There is also a Peloton bike and static rower.
This hotel is the perfect base for exploring Camber Sands and the surrounding area (where there are castles, vineyards, beaches, antique shops and plenty of pubs to be discovered) and the hotel provides Hunter wellies in all sizes for country and beach walks, as well as Finisterre changing robes and stripy beach towels if you're brave enough to take a dip.
There are two electric car chargers at the front of the hotel, which you can call ahead to reserve.
Since last year, The Gallivant has worked in partnership with local winemakers Gusbourne Estate to run two wine tours that explore English wines and can be arranged by the hotel.
Accessibility
Although not fully accessible due to the size of some door frames, all rooms on the ground floor, as well as and common areas, are step-free.
Pet policy
Dogs are wholeheartedly welcomed – every four-legged guest was greeted with delight by staff while I was there. A number of the rooms are dog-friendly, with an additional fee of £25. The only areas where dogs are not allowed are the snug and Harry's restaurant (although there are tables in the bar area where guests with dogs can dine).

Migrants run across beach to board dinghy in the Channel
Pictures and video captured by the PA news agency show dozens of people sprinting in shallow water before climbing onto a boat at Gravelines beach on Thursday morning. French authorities in an inflatable boat out at sea approached the overcrowded dinghy, passing those on board lifejackets. No police were seen on the beach when the groups of people came out of the sand dunes and attempted to board the black inflatable boat. PA first saw one boat drop off several men at around 5am, who went into the sand dunes, before a second boat came close to shore, circling until the migrants appeared on the beach. The people, including a family with two children, put themselves into groups before trying to climb onto the boat. Around 40 people, believed to be about half of the full group, left on the dinghy. More than 22,500 people have arrived in the UK after making the journey across the Channel so far this year.

Prime Minister says UK will ‘work ever more closely' with Germany
The Prime Minister and German chancellor Friedrich Merz signed the deal – to be known as the Kensington Treaty – at the V&A Museum on London, as Sir Keir said they will look to 'work ever more closely' on issues such as trade, security and defence. The leaders agreed to 'reinforce Euro-Atlantic security' and support their defence forces, in an agreement was also signed by Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul. Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister told Mr Merz: 'It's a privilege to have you here today, particularly to sign this Kensington Treaty, which is a very special treaty, because it's the first of its kind ever, if you can believe it, between our two countries.' Sir Keir described it as 'evidence of the closeness of our relationship as it stands today' as well as a 'statement of intent, a statement of our ambition to work ever more closely together'. The document details the UK and German agreement to 'reinforce Euro-Atlantic security and ensure effective deterrence against potential aggressors' through their defence forces, as well as looking to improving defence cooperation in the future. It also reaffirms support for Nato and Nato allies. As part of Thursday's deal, Berlin has agreed to allow some arriving UK passengers to use passport e-gates. The move will initially be available for frequent travellers and is due to be in place by the end of August. The treaty also includes the UK and Germany agreeing to establish a taskforce aimed at paving the way for direct train services between the countries. It is hoped services could begin within the next decade. The treaty also says that the two nations 'value bilateral school and youth exchanges' and will help make them work. Elsewhere in the treaty it says that the UK and Germany will: – Cooperate in the joint fight against organised cross-border crime' in an effort to end migrant smuggling. – Work towards more bilateral work on defence – Pursue 'deep exchanges' on security issues such as arms policy, and chemical biological radiological and nuclear threats as well as counter-terror and space security The treaty comes as part of a wider visit by Mr Merz as Downing Street looks to boost ties on defence and tackling people smuggling, after Germany committed last year to make facilitating the smuggling of migrants to the UK a criminal offence Mr Merz is expected to commit to adopting the law change by the end of the year. Downing Street has described the move as a 'significant step'. Asked if Sir Keir was frustrated by the slow pace of change in Germany, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said that people smuggling is 'an international issue that requires international solutions'. 'And over the last year, you've seen the Prime Minister working tirelessly to reset relationships across Europe, and you've seen a number of examples of the progress of that, not least with the French last week,' he added. 'This is a significant step that will give law enforcement and prosecutors the tools they need to address this scandal of small boats which are destined to cross the Channel being stored and concealed in Germany.' After the signing ceremony, the two leaders then travelled to Downing Street for a further meeting. Mr Merz said he had been 'surprised' to learn that the agreement was the first UK-Germany treaty since the Second World War. 'We had you in the European Union and we thought that was enough,' he said. 'But we are now learning that it's not enough so we have to do more on that.'

Does airline travel really need to be so terrible in 2025?
July is an especially chaotic month for flying. It makes it the perfect time for workers to take a stand against staff shortages, low wages and poor working conditions. At the beginning of the month, air traffic controllers in France walked out for two days on July 3 and 4, citing low staffing levels and 'toxic and authoritarian' management. I was sitting in my cramped little window seat on board a Ryanair flight, anxiously rubbing the Saint Christopher around my neck, when the apologetic pilot announced to passengers that we might be stuck on the tarmac for several hours waiting for a slot due to airspace capacity restrictions. Flying is a privilege, I remind myself. But it sure doesn't feel like an honour these days. Between the illusion of low-cost ticket prices based on the infuriating strategy of 'unbundling' to the industrial action-inducing conditions for aviation workers across Europe and the UK, has flying ever been this bad? French air traffic controllers were not the only workers taking strike action this month. In Finland, industrial action rocked Finnair and Helsinki Airport across several days in a dispute over wages (some dates have since been called off). Across Italy, baggage handlers at several Italian airports took part in a 24-hour strike on July 10. Workers at a clutch of other airports in Italy took part in separate strikes around the same time. Spanish airline and airport workers also went on strike. July 26 should be a fun day to travel as Spanish and Italian aviation strikes coincide with the last day of a walkout by around 100 Glasgow Airport workers. Needless to say, this summer has seen record disruption with hundreds of flights cancelled and tens of thousands of passengers impacted. A huge part of the problem is that demand is back to pre-pandemic levels, but staffing levels are not. Budget cuts during Covid, coupled with stalls in training across parts of the aviation industry, have put pressure on everyone from baggage handlers and air traffic controllers to airport ambassadors, support officers and more. Then there is the squeeze on airspace over Europe caused by the war in Ukraine. Conflict in the Middle East has also led to hundreds of cancellations. As a passenger daring to go on vacation in the summer, these sorts of delays and cancellations are to be expected nowadays. And they are mostly out of the control of airlines. Industrial action on the ground is considered 'extraordinary circumstances', so airlines are not required to pay passengers compensation for any delays or cancellations caused by strikes. Airlines have been pretty vocal about their dissatisfaction at having to cancel hundreds of journeys. EasyJet boss Kenton Jarvis said the airline was 'extremely unhappy' at the French ATC strikers. Michael O'Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, accused French air traffic controllers of 'holding European families to ransom'. Buckled up on the tarmac, I debate forking over more than a fiver for a pack of Pringles and a lukewarm Sprite during the agonising wait to take off. As excruciating as it is to spend hours in a parked Boeing 737 (hours that could be spent on the beach), the torture of travel begins the moment you try to purchase a flight from a budget airline. Further inconveniences, delays and cancellations do not feel out of place in a system that is broken thanks to a low-cost model that created an incredible race to the bottom. July, for the obvious reason of demand, is not a cheap month to travel, even if you are flying with a budget airline. So, I pay a fare which only covers my bum in a seat that barely scrapes the minimum legal-size standard and try and figure out how I can pack everything I need into a little backpack. The size of which (40x20x25cm) is far smaller than the actual space beneath a seat. What the heck? I think. The airline describes this allowance as 'generous'. For the honour of putting a bag in the overhead locker, you have to pay for priority boarding. It allows the airline staff to examine the shorter, non-priority queue and pick off holidaymakers with oversized bags one by one with ease. It's marketed as a system that is all about efficiency, but it doesn't exactly feel more efficient. It feels more like creating artificial scarcity by limiting how much space you and your things are allowed to take up. Last time I checked, the layout of the aeroplanes did not shrink and neither did the overhead lockers. The unbundling model, which airlines say is good because it means people pay for what they want, is infuriating to me. There is little overlap with the policies of different airlines, confusion abounds, and as a nervous flyer anyway, the mounting fees at every turn are a never-ending source of jump scares. Airlines once prided themselves on how wonderful the experience was. Now the whole process has been so dehumanised, broken by design and frustrating that it leaves me wondering just how bad things are really going to get before they start getting better. Air fares might be low, but they are still increasing. So are all of the ancillary charges. As a customer, I am becoming less and less tolerant of being squeezed for every last penny before I've even landed. I look forward to travelling and taking time off work, and the first few hours of it are sometimes, if not always, completely ruined by the terrible state of air travel. Across the UK and Europe, we seem to be reaching a breaking point. If staff and passengers are the losers under the current system, who are the winners? Those who decided that air travel was a financial product and not a service. And I reckon those folk can afford to fly First Class.
