SP neta garlanded, then gets slapped on dais at public function in UP's Jaunpur; Akhilesh Yadav blames BJP for 'atrocities on PDA society'
A screengrab of the video that went viral on social media
VARANASI: Senior politician Mahendra Rajbhar was slapped multiple times after being garlanded by Brajesh Rajbhar of the Suheldev Swabhiman Party at a function organised to mark Maharaja Suheldev's birth anniversary in the Jalalpur area of Jaunpur district on Tuesday.
Mahendra had been referred to as 'Katappa' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was fielded as the
Bharatiya Janata Party
and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) alliance candidate against gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari from the Mau Sadar seat in the 2017 assembly elections. However, after being closely associated with SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar, Mahendra opened a front against him and formed his own Suheldev Swabhiman Party in 2019. He joined the Samajwadi Party in 2022 and came close to
Akhilesh Yadav
.
Reacting to the attack on Mahendra, Akhilesh posted on X, "The violent attack on veteran Mahendra Rajbhar is another condemnable example of the ever-increasing humiliating behaviour and atrocities on the 'PDA society' under BJP. If BJP's negligence is not involved in this attack, the assailant should be immediately arrested and punished for his act." Jaunpur SP Kaustubh told TOI in the evening, "We have taken note of the viral video of the assault on Mahendra Rajbhar, and a complaint has also been received against Brajesh Rajbhar at Jalalpur police station.

Police investigation has started in this matter, and appropriate action will be initiated as per its outcomes."
The complaint stated that the attack was carried out at the behest of SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar, whose closeness with Mahendra was not hidden in Rajbhar politics before the duo parted ways. Brajesh had hosted a function in Jalalpur to honour Rajbhar icon Maharaja Suheldev. Leaders from the Rajbhar community within the Samajwadi Party were also present at the event, in which Mahendra was called by Brajesh to the dais to be felicitated.
The viral video of the event showed Brajesh in his speech stating that the community's plight is due to its own people. "When our own people are at the helm, they do not advocate for their community but prefer to serve themselves and work for their families. There are many such leaders who have become tyrants, possessed by the spirit of Ghazi," he said.
Saying that the name of Maharaja Suheldev is being exploited by those who are deceiving and looting the community, he appealed to the Rajbhars to abandon 'such people'. Immediately after saying this, Brajesh garlanded Mahendra and then started slapping him multiple times until others present at the dais caught him. The surprise action led to chaos at the function, and people gathered there struggled hard to normalise the atmosphere.

Samajwadi Party approaches SC over cancellation of office allotment in Pilibhit
The Samajwadi Party has approached the Supreme Court over cancellation of its office allotment in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit. The special leave petition (SLP) filed before the apex court questions the validity of a decision of the Allahabad High Court which had dismissed the writ petition filed in individual capacity by then Pilibhit District President of Samajwadi Party and ordered that no liberty would be given to file a fresh plea on the same cause of action. The SLP said that the then District President did not act on behalf of the party, nor did he have any instructions from the party, but had filed the proceedings in his own name. It added that the Samajwadi Party intends to approach the Allahabad HC against "ill-conceived, abrupt and illegal decisions" of the Pilibhit Nagar Palika Parishad, but cannot do so as the impugned decision prevents it from filing a fresh plea on allotment cancellation. Since the party did not have any office in Pilibhit, as per the SLP, it was allotted the premises in question in 2020 and subsequently, a Letter of Possession was issued by the Pilibhit Nagar Palika Parishad. However, the Executive Officer, in an order passed in 2020, recorded that due procedure was not followed in allotment of the property and several procedures were circumvented, such as a public auction was not done and the rent agreement was not registered. "The officials of Nagar Palika Parishad, Pilibhit as well as the Executive Officer, Nagar Palika Parishad, Pilibhit had neither given an opportunity of hearing to the Petitioner nor have they considered the facts or the law relevant in this case, before passing the Order,' contended the SLP, adding that the party had been religiously paying the annual rent and has remitted rent payment till January 2021. It said that since allotment cancellation proceedings were not under the Public Premises Act, the order of the Executive Officer is without jurisdiction because the allotment was done by the board of Pilibhit Nagar Palika Parishad. "That acting under political pressure, the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council, Pilibhit along with his subordinates and associates, had been illegally interfering with the peaceful working of the office of the petitioner and had made innumerable attempts to forcibly shut down the Samajwadi Party office in the district," the SP's SLP contended.
