Around 10,000 Ayrshire homes earmarked for faster broadband

Daily Record09-05-2025
The annoumcement is part of the UK government's Plan for Change investment.
Close to 10,000 homes in Ayrshire are to gain access to lightning-fast broadband for the first time as part of £157million UK government investment.
The news, part of the government's Plan for Change to boost economic growth has been welcomed by all four Ayrshire Scottish Labour MPs.

The aim is to tackle digital exclusion across the entire UK and boosting local economic growth through giving businesses the vital tools they need, to improving access to public services like virtual NHS appointments.

In a collective statement, MPs Alan Gemmell, Elaine Stewart, Irene Campbell and Lillian Jones said: 'This is brilliant news for people in North, South and East Ayrshire. Access to the internet is no longer a luxury, it is an essential way we live, work and learn in our everyday lives.
'I'm delighted homes across Ayrshire are set to benefit from the UK Labour Government making this investment, which will help families and grow our economy.'
Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray said: 'This £157 million UK Government investment is a game changer for tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the most remote areas of Scotland.
'Rolling out lightning-fast broadband will equip and inspire local businesses to thrive, enable families to access vital services, and build resilient communities.
'Our Plan for Change recognises that rural communities are the backbone of our nation and economic growth must reach every corner of Scotland, ensuring that opportunity isn't determined by postcode but by potential.'
The deal was struck under an £800 million agreement with Openreach announced last August as part of wider plans to end the plight of digital exclusion across rural Britain, with work already underway to connect over 227,000 premises in hard-to-reach parts of Wales and England as part of the agreement. The agreement is funded by the UK government who will work alongside the Scottish Government and Openreach to deliver the coverage.

Kids back to school, Greens back to improving education

Scottish Green Party co-leader Lorna Slater As schools across Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland return for a new academic year, families are once again adjusting to early mornings, packed lunches and the excitement that comes with new classrooms and new challenges. For us in politics, it is a reminder of our responsibility to ensure that every child in Scotland has access to the best possible education, no matter their background. That is why the Scottish Greens are working hard in Parliament to transform education, making it fairer, greener and more supportive for every pupil. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad One of the most significant changes we are delivering is the replacement of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). For too long, the SQA has been associated with a system that did not always put learners first. We have listened to the voices of young people, parents and teachers and now the Scottish Government must create a new independent qualifications body. This reform is about creating a system that is transparent, accountable and above all, centred on the needs of young people. Heading back to school. Making the school day greener is another key priority. Schools are not just places of learning, they are also part of our communities. By investing in renewable energy, improving insulation and cutting waste, we can make schools healthier environments for pupils while also tackling the climate crisis. Greener schools also provide valuable opportunities for children to learn about sustainability in practice, reinforcing lessons that will be vital for their futures. I am also incredibly proud of the expansion of free school meals. Good nutrition is essential for learning, yet too many families still struggle with food costs. By extending free meals to more pupils, we are reducing the stigma around school dining and making sure that no child is forced to go through the school day hungry. This is an investment not only in children's health but also in their education and wellbeing. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Affordability does not stop at food. The cost of school uniforms can be a huge burden on families. The Scottish Greens have been campaigning to make uniforms more affordable, working with local authorities and schools to promote more flexible and inclusive approaches. No pupil should feel left out or disadvantaged because their family cannot afford a particular blazer or logo. Education is about giving every child the tools to thrive. By reforming qualifications, making school buildings sustainable, expanding free meals and tackling the cost of uniforms, we are taking steps that will help build a fairer Scotland where every child has the chance to succeed.

Completion date announced for £17.2m housing development

A total of 75 new homes, including 40 one-bedroom flats, 30 two-bedroom flats, and five flats for wheelchair users, will be ready for occupancy early next year. The project was partially funded by a £6.7 million contribution from the Scottish Government. Councillor Martin Kilbride, buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: "The addition of another 75 affordable homes in Ayr is great news and underlines our commitment to build energy efficient and affordable properties which meet the needs of tenants." The council plans to write to these individuals to ascertain their interest in returning. For those who wish to return, the council has pledged assistance with removals and packing, as well as reimbursement for reasonable moving expenses. The last remaining tower block is set for demolition in September, with a plan for the works to take around eight weeks. The council has confirmed that the demolition will not affect the nearby housing development. After the demolition, landscaping works will be conducted across the entire site. Councillor Kilbride added: "With the telecoms mast decommissioned, we can get on with the demolition of the remaining tower block before the completion of the new development in January next year."
