One of the most important financial advices given to a financial professional is – 'follow the money trail'.
In plain language, it means track who has finally benefitted from the event / service and / or has made payment for the same. Money never changes hands unless there is a benefit or advantage derived from the exchange.
One can apply the lesson of 'follow the money trail' to many events that are happening in India today:
International rankings and ratings — whatever we in India may do to improve on international rankings such as health index, hunger index, per capita income, democracy index, national health index, etc — the subtle message coming thru is that you are not good enough. There is a lot of distance still to be covered by the country. In many cases, there are some very surprising countries ranked higher than us. The issue that we in India have to focus on who is the organization making the rankings and who is funding the organization.
It is almost certain that the Report creation by NGOs / influential thinktanks is funded by Financiers, Investment Trusts, etc who have a clear anti India agenda. There are many such entities in the World -worried by India rising economic and political power who would want to sow seeds of unhappiness, dis-satisfaction, despair, to make the country feel small and not upto the status that it merits and deserves.
The next time the Indian media quotes the findings of these Bodies and quotes their Reports as gospel truth – they should find out who is funding such organizations and mention their names in the news disclosures. That would immediately inform the reader / viewer as to whose vested interests are being served. For all the severe criticism President Trump is facing, he has highlighted the use of USA money for interference in our Nation political activity. There are vested interests outside India who want to see a destabilized India and sadly there are many powerful & influential press and media commentators who will keep this matter of India poor ranking alive.
We are all aware that the one who pays the piper calls the tune. These rankings and reports will finally closely align with the objective of the Sponsor or the Funding entity.
Income Tax Returns filing — it is a well known fact that very few Indians file Income Tax Returns though very large number of persons possess PAN Cards. It is opined by many Tax consultants and individual income Tax experts that possessing the PAN card is a ruse to escape high TDS rates on dividends income. The TDS (tax deducted at source) on dividends is less if there is a PAN card number submitted by the shareholder to the company. The income tax return will not be filed, though lower TDS rate will be taken advantage of.
'Follow the money trail' strategy could be brilliantly used for such cases where income tax returns are not filed. The process could be as under, thanks to success of the JAM trinity (explosion of Jan dhan bank accounts – Aadhaar card – mobile phone). Many possess bank accounts now:
Distinguish the income tax returns filers from those who do not file returns. Mainly, savings bank accounts and PAN Card numbers are linked. In the month of April (start of new accounting year), the bank savings account holder (above 21 years of age) with linked PAN Card # informs the bank whether he has filed an income tax return – in April '25, the individual submits proof of submission of income tax return for accounting year 2023-24.
If there is proof of submission of income tax return, the Role of the bank ceases. However, if there is no validation of income tax return being submitted, the banker has to play an important Role.
For those over 21 years of age, every month based on credits in the savings account of those not filing income tax returns (except interbank funds transfer), the banker does a Tax collection at source (TCS) at say 12% of the total monthly receipts credit and remits this TCS money to the Central income tax treasury. A TCS % rate between 10-15 % is fair. Every month, the individual's bank account has a debit for tax collected from his bank account. An annual statement of TCS deducted and paid to Central Govt Income Tax is provided.
This way the banking channel is used for tax recovery for non income tax returns filers – on amounts credited to bank account. In case an individual has a problem on high tax collection at source, he / she should file an income tax return and claim the extra tax deduction as a refund. Of course, the Income Tax Dept will need to be invested into to support the higher Returns submissions and assessments.
This 'follow the money trail' policy will see higher individual income tax collection and more income tax returns being filed.
The biggest advantage of this method of 'tax collection at source' is that it impacts all non income tax filing individuals equally. Equity and Justice come back into income tax collection and the income tax base of income tax players expands. Many individuals running businesses in unorganized sector and agriculturists with other taxable income sources would get impacted.
The income tax rules for computing taxable income stay and you have the freedom to file income tax returns and claim tax refunds, as applicable.
CONCLUSION – It is clear that this 'follow the money trail' policy brings transparency in purpose of country ratings and rankings and improves tax collection in India by tapping bank credits.

Govt to hold talks with exporters as Iran-Israel conflict stalls shipments, drives up costs
New Delhi: As the armed conflict between Iran and Israel threatens to disrupt trade routes across West Asia, the government will talk to exporters to assess the impact and chart a response, three officials aware of the development told Mint. The discussions will be aimed at safeguarding India's exports to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Israel, along with major European markets, the officials said on the condition of anonymity. The conflict has escalated concerns over the safety of cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, a critical maritime corridor for Indian exports. Shipping delays, rising freight charges, and limited insurance coverage are already being flagged by exporters and trade bodies, they said. Also read: Mint Explainer: How the Israel-Iran conflict can crash India's growth party 'As the situation has escalated only recently, we are closely monitoring developments and will engage with exporters and relevant industry groups to formulate a strategy that minimises the disruption to trade," said one of the three officials cited above. 'The discussion will be centred around finding a way out of the crisis and ensuring that trade flows are preserved to the extent possible." Export promotion councils, including those representing engineering goods, basmati rice, textiles, and pharmaceuticals, have raised an alarm. 'The geopolitical tensions will have a major impact on India's export-oriented trade to Europe and West Asia, as the Red Sea is a key route," said Arun Kumar Garodia, former chairman of the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC). 'The conflict will force shipments to take alternate, longer routes via the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), adding to the cost burden on traders and importers," he said. 'This disruption is likely to affect India's overall trade performance, which may be reflected in the coming months' export data." Queries emailed to the commerce ministry remained unanswered till press time. Also read: Mint Explainer | Strait of Hormuz: Will Iran shut the vital oil artery of the world? For trade promotion bodies, the key concern is the 50% rise in shipment costs just days after the escalation began, and these are anticipated to increase even more after 1 July, the second official quoted earlier said. Basmati exporters have raised concerns over growing uncertainty in the Iranian market, one of India's top destinations for the commodity. With consignments lying at Indian ports and many shipments in transit, exporters fear that any delay could cost them the critical mid-June to mid-July delivery window, before Iran begins harvesting its domestic rice crop. 'Iran typically imposes a seasonal import ban by mid-July to protect local farmers. If tensions persist, we could miss the shipment window entirely," said Satish Goel, president of the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA). India's rice exports to Iran rose to $757.30 million in FY25 from $689.80 million a year earlier, accounting for nearly 76% of India's total agricultural shipments to the country. Iran alone buys around one million tonnes of Indian basmati rice annually, or about 12% of India's total basmati exports, which stood at $5.94 billion in FY25. 'We are in a Catch-22 situation. With tensions escalating, many exporters have put their shipments on hold, even though consignments are already lying at the ports," Goel said. 'If the situation doesn't stabilise soon, exporters could end up bearing heavy losses." According to exporters, some ships in transit may be forced to turn back if the conflict drags on, while insurance remains another sticking point. Also read: India in anti-dumping crosshairs: US, Pakistan target Indian exports at WTO 'The major concern flagged by trade bodies is that many of these consignments may not be insured, as insurance companies typically refuse coverage for shipments headed to war or conflict zones," said the third official. Several other Gulf nations and nearby economies may face trade disruptions if shipping lanes become inaccessible or unsafe. The UAE, one of India's largest trading partners, could face delays in receiving food items, textiles and engineering goods. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, and Kuwait are similarly vulnerable due to their dependence on maritime imports, the official said. 'The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict is expected to significantly impact India's trade with Europe, given that much of the cargo to the continent transits through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal," said S. Ramakrishna, former chairman and now advisor of the Federation of Freight Forwarders' Associations in India (FFFAI). India's exports to Europe stayed almost unchanged over the previous year at $98.34 billion in FY25, according to official trade data. Israel, which imports high-value Indian goods like pharmaceuticals and machinery, may also experience setbacks in port operations and air cargo services if the situation escalates.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Did Turkish Technic service maintain AI-717 Dreamliner? Here's what Turkiye officials say
Amid Baba Ramdev alleged involvement of a Turkish maintenance agency behind Air India AI-717 plane crash, the Turkish government has denied the involvement of Turkish Technic in the maintenance of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The communication wing of the government on 13 June said that the claim that Turkish Technic maintained the AI-171 aircraft 'is false' and 'constitutes disinformation aimed at manipulating public opinion" on India-Turkey relations. 'The claim that 'the maintenance of the Boeing 787-8 passenger aircraft was carried out by Turkish Technic' following the crash of an Air India passenger aircraft during take-off is false. The claim that the crashed aircraft was maintained by Turkish Technic constitutes disinformation aimed at manipulating public opinion regarding Türkiye-India relations," the Turkish government said on June 13 on X. 'Under the agreements made between Air India and Turkish Technic in 2024 and 2025, maintenance services are provided exclusively for B777-type wide-body aircraft. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner involved in the accident does not fall within the scope of this agreement. To date, Turkish Technic has not conducted maintenance on any Air India aircraft of this type," it added. Though the Turkish authorities acknowledged that they were aware of the firm responsible for the last maintenance of the crashed aircraft, they refrained from revealing the name. "Although we are aware of which company performed the most recent maintenance on the crashed aircraft, it is beyond our scope to make a statement on this matter to avoid further speculation. The Center for Countering Disinformation will continue to monitor and take the necessary measures against efforts that target the reputation of our flagship brands, which represent Türkiye on the international stage," the Turkish government said. Among other things, the Turkish authorities said that they sincerely share the grief of the Indian people over this tragic plane crash, where over 270 people were killed. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Saturday had alleged the involvement of a Turkish maintenance agency whose contract with Indian airports was terminated in May 2025. 'I got to know that an agency from Turkiye used to take care of the maintenance and service of the aircraft. India will have to keep a close eye on the aviation sector,' Ramdev told ANI news agency. 'There is a possibility of a conspiracy by that agency.' Though he didn't provide any evidence for his claims, but said India must stop allowing foreign companies to interfere in such sensitive matters.
