Club Brugge Belgian Pro League 2025/2026 Preview

Yahoo22-07-2025
Overview:
Club Brugge may have missed out on title number 20 to Union St Gilloise, but they did manage to pick up a long overdue domestic cup and enjoyed a successful European campaign. This year, expect Nicky Hayen and Club Brugge to challenge on all fronts once again, although they will have to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in a while. The side have seen young talent Chemsdine Talbi join Maxim De Cuyper in moving to the Premier League. Ardon Jashri, despite Club Brugge playing hard ball with AC Milan, is also expected to leave at some point.
Transfers in: Carlos Forbs (Ajax), Ludovit Reis (Hamburger SV), Nicolo Tresoldi (Hannover 96)
Transfers out: Chemsdine Talbi (Sunderland), Maxim De Cuyper (Brighton), Illyes Benachour (Sint Truidne), Casper Nielsen (Standard Liege), Ferran Jutgla (Celta Vigo),
Key player: Hans Vanaken
This would be Jashari if he wasn't almost certainly leaving, but Vanaken at 32 is still a vital player for Club. He is ageing like fine wine, with another 12 goal season last time out, alongside 15 assists in 58 games, his best return on that front since 2018/2019. Vanaken is not slowing down just yet and remains one of the best midfielders in terms of scoring and creating for Club Brugge in the Pro League.
Young player to watch: Romeo Vermant
After a strong finish to the season last year, Romeo Vermant looks set to be the sides starting striker this year. The 21-year-old forced his way into the first team and ended the campaign with 11 goals in 38 games. He brings a more versatile profile to the sides attack than Gustaf Nilsson and should be even better this year.
Transfer window needs:
Should Jashari or Raphael Onyedika leave, another central midfielder would be a decent move for Club Brugge. Replacing De Cuyper is a must, as Bjorn Meijer is also expected to return to the Netherlands during the window. The Super Cup showed that Club can be competitive as set up, but if they want to be the best team in Belgium, they will need to add a bit more depth in certain areas to compete on all three fronts. Getting rid of some surplus players to make room for more quality and young talent from Club NXT would also be a wise choice for the Club Brugge hierarchy.

Alexander Isak: Liverpool handed huge transfer boost in striker pursuit as deal agreed

Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak looks to be gaining momentum once more as the Reds were handed a big boost to their transfer war chest. The Premier League champions last week saw a £110million plus add-ons bid turned down by Newcastle for the Swedish international, and reports soon after claimed that interest in the striker then ended. However, that stance is now believed to have changed with Liverpool nearing a key sale to bolster their transfer kitty. According to widespread reports, Liverpool have reached an agreement to sell striker Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal, who had made the Uruguayan their 'priority' target after missing out on Victor Osimhen, who made his loan move to Galatasaray permanent. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Saudi Pro League outfit are closing in on the signing of Nunez, in what would be a huge boost to Liverpool's chances of signing Isak. The Italian journalist detailed that the Reds would receive £46m plus add-ons for the forward. Not only does Nunez's prospective exit make room for another body in Arne Slot's striking ranks, it also brings in vital cash for Liverpool to tack onto their initial Isak offer as they prepare to test Newcastle's resolve once more. The Daily Mail reported previously that the Magpies were holding out for closer to £150m for their talisman, and funds brought in from Nunez will help Liverpool get closer to that figure. Liverpool have spent well over £200m this summer already, with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

WATCH: Punches thrown as Real Betis and Como players involved in pre-season brawl

Real Betis took on Serie A side Como in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, but the match in Cadiz was anything but friendly. A number of players from both sides were involved in a massive brawl, during which punches were thrown. After the half time whistle was blown, at which point Como were leading 2-0 courtesy of goals from ex-Betis player Assane Diao and Lucas de Cunha, a fight broke out after Pablo Fornals and Massimo Perrone exchanged blows. There was also a rather comedic moment shortly after when Los Verdiblancos striker Cucho Hernandez came flying in, but rather that landing a punch on a Como player, he hit teammate Natan instead. Fornals, despite landing the first blow, avoided being sent off, but Perrone was given his marching orders at the Estadio Municipal de La Línea de la Concepción. However, Betis did have a man sent off, that being veteran defender Hector Bellerin. Altercation could have a knock-on effect for both clubs Betis and Como, who face Barcelona in their next pre-season friendly, showed plenty of fight, although on this occasion, it went way too far. And there could be a knock-on effect for those involved in the scuffle, should the referee choose to take the matter further – which could result in suspensions for the start of the new season, which gets underway for Betis in 12 days' time when they take on newly-promoted Elche. If there are any suspensions that come out of this for Betis, with the likely candidates being Bellerin, Fornals and Cucho, it would be terrible news for head coach Manuel Pellegrini. The latter is expected to be the club's starting striker for the new season, while Fornals is a leading candidate to play on the right wing, due to the fact that a new winger has not yet been signed.

Chelsea striker Marc Guiu joins promoted Sunderland on loan

SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — Newly promoted Sunderland signed 19-year-old striker Marc Guiu on a season-long loan from Chelsea on Wednesday ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Guiu made 16 appearances for Enzo Maresca's team last season and scored six goals — all in the UEFA Conference League campaign. Chelsea won the third-tier competition. Guiu became the second-youngest player (18 years, 350 days old) to score a hat trick for Chelsea. That feat came in a 5-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers. The Spaniard also played twice in Chelsea's run to the Club World Cup title. 'I see myself as a powerful striker, who can make a difference on and off the ball, and I pride myself on being a natural goalscorer,' he said in Sunderland's announcement. Guiu rose through Barcelona's youth academy and made seven appearances for the Catalan club before joining Chelsea in 2024. Sunderland hosts West Ham at the Stadium of Light on Aug. 16 in its season opener. ___ AP soccer:
