Christine Fan competes in singing reality show, gets eliminated in 1st round

Singer Christine Fan has openly expressed her disappointment with her performance of 'The First Dream' (2004) on Chinese reality music competition 'Singer 2025'. Photo: Christine Fan/Instagram America-born Taiwanese singer Christine Fan made a short-lived appearance as a contestant on Singer 2025 – the Chinese reality music competition broadcast on Hunan Television – before getting eliminated in the same episode. The show, which premiered on May 16, features an international line-up of professional singers, including Chen Chusheng from China, Beni from Japan and Mickey Guyton from the US. Three winners will be named at the end of the season. Singer 2025 was formerly known as I Am A Singer , which premiered in 2013 and was renamed in 2017. This is the 10th season of the show, and voting results are determined by in-person audiences as well as Internet users. Fan, better known by her stage name FanFan, was brought in to replace Taiwanese singer Terry Lin, 58, who was eliminated after the fourth episode, which aired on June 6. Fan came in last among eight singers, ranking below those from China, such as Ma Jiaqi, Shan Yichun and Gai. Fan, 49, sang her hit track The First Dream (2004), but was off-key and suffered from shaky vocals. She reportedly cried as soon as she left the stage. Netizens compared her performance to the scene of a car accident, with viewers adding she was not confident and appeared nervous. In an Instagram post on June 7, Fan said she was thankful and satisfied to have participated in Singer 2025 . She expressed her disappointment, writing that 'it has been many years since I have participated in the recording of such shows, and I am upset with my subpar performance'. 'I have failed to meet the expectations of viewers, and I am deeply sorry for that.' However, the singer remained positive, adding that one need not excel every day, and that life will turn out fine as long as one bravely works towards accomplishing his or her dreams. She wrapped up her caption by thanking the show's crew, as well as her colleagues, friends, family members and the team behind Singer 2025 who cheered her on. Fan's latest album, Solitary Moment , was released in 2022. Since her music debut in 2000, she has staged several concert tours, with the most recent being her On Road To Happiness world tour (2017 to 2019), during which she made stops in cities like Taipei, Los Angeles and Singapore. She is married to Taiwanese television host Blackie Chen, 48, and the couple have nine-year-old twin sons. Chen was embroiled in Taiwan's #MeToo scandal in 2023 after being accused by Taiwanese actress Tina Chou of committing sexual harassment in 2012. Chen and Fan have denied the allegations. In 2023, the couple filed a NT$10mil (RM1.41mil) lawsuit against Chou to 'restore the reputation of the parties concerned', but ended up dropping it. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network View this post on Instagram A post shared by 范范范瑋琪 (@fanfan)

Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein convicted in New York retrial

Harvey Weinstein, former co-chairman of the Weinstein Co., appears at Manhattan criminal court in New York, U.S., on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Michael Nagle/Pool via REUTERS NEW YORK (Reuters) -A Manhattan jury found Harvey Weinstein guilty on a sex crimes charge on Wednesday in a retrial after a state appeals court last year overturned the former movie mogul's 2020 conviction. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, was accused by prosecutors in the case of raping an aspiring actress and assaulting two other women. Weinstein, 73, pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. In closing arguments on June 3, the prosecution told the 12 jurors that the evidence showed how Weinstein used his power and influence to trap and abuse women. The defense countered that the accusers lied on the witness stand out of spite after their consensual sexual encounters with the Oscar-winning producer failed to result in Hollywood stardom. Jurors reached their verdict on the fifth day of sometimes fractious deliberations. The retrial began on April 23. Weinstein has had a litany of health problems and attended the retrial in a wheelchair. In the retrial, Weinstein was charged with raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and assaulting Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress. A jury had in February 2020 found Weinstein guilty of raping Mann and sexually assaulting Haley. Sokola's allegation was not part of that case. The conviction was a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. But the New York Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, threw out that conviction in April 2024. It said the trial judge erred by letting women testify that Weinstein had assaulted them, though their accusations were not the basis of the criminal charges. Though the 2020 conviction was thrown out, Weinstein has remained behind bars because of his 2022 rape conviction in California, which resulted in a 16-year prison sentence. He is appealing that verdict. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. The retrial was handled by prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. They portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. The defense rejected that characterization, saying Weinstein engaged in "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities. Weinstein co-founded the Miramax studio, whose hit movies included "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." His own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after sexual misconduct accusations against him became widely publicized. Weinstein has experienced several health episodes while being held at New York City's Rikers Island jail, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. #SHOWBIZ: Ed Sheeran forced to increase security after 'weird' incidents

LONDON: British singer Ed Sheeran has revealed he's had to install 24-hour security at his home due to "weird things which have happened". The Daily Mirror reported yesterday that Sheeran strives to maintain as normal a life as possible with his family. In a new interview with Louis Theroux, he explained: "I was having a conversation with my wife about this actually, because I do think that there's a different kind of normal that is our business." "For instance, I have like 24-hour security on my house, I have security with my kids, "I have security with me, I have security with my wife, just because there've been a couple of like, weird things over the years that have happened." Sheeran added: "I've never seen that as normal, but within my industry, that's completely normal." He also shared that fame makes it more difficult to do ordinary things with his children, and he "mourned" not being able to take his kids to the swings in a public park. "I don't do it that much. Of all the things that I've tried to do normal for my kids, I took them to see my friend's mum's pantomime and she shut off the top of the theatre so we could sit there on our own and watch her." Sheeran is married to Cherry Seaborn, and the couple has two children. The four-time Grammy-winning singer also revealed that he does not own a private jet and prefers to travel by train.
