‘Astonishing': Text exchange reveals what boss didn't ask
UK workplace Ben Askins has created a niche online by sharing anonymous text message exchangers between workers and employees.
Mr Askins has now amassed millions of views by giving people a peek into workplace across the world.
'Hey. I've just had a call from Jamie's school, he has had a fall and they've asked me to pick him up,' the worker texted.
'Right. How long are you going to be?' The boss demanded.
'Not sure yet. They said he is a bit bruised and shaken. So I'm going to take him home, I'll have to have to work from home for the rest of the day. If that is okay?' The employee asked.
The anonymous boss didn't inquire if the child was okay and instead berated the employee.
'Can no one else pick him up? This is meant to be an office day,' the boss replied.
The worker replied and apologised, but said they had to leave because no one else was home to care for their child.
The boss didn't take the hint.
'What about our meeting later?' The boss asked.
The employee replied and said she has her laptop, and once she's home and gets her son settled, she'll log back on.
The boss replied that it was 'not really the same' and the employee fired back that she would be 'online and available' but couldn't leave her son alone.
'I will let you go but please don't tell anyone. I don't want people thinking this is an option for everyone,' the boss said,
'Okay understood. Thank you,' the employee texted.
Mr Askins argued that the employee had nothing to be thankful for because the boss was doing less than the bare minimum.
'Think about how wild this is,' he said.
'There are obviously things that are so much important than work.'
Mr Askins argued it was 'astonishing' that the boss didn't want other workers to know it is okay to take time out of work to care for your child.
Mr Askins said the only response to an emergency like that is to let your worker go home, and also let them know they don't have to log back in later if they can't.
'He absolutely Bodged it',' he said.
People online were fairly stunned by the texting exchange.
'Anyone else feels like workplaces are going backwards rather than forwards?' one asked.
'It's always the same people with sick kids and the rest of the team has to pick up their slack. Always,' another claimed.
'Do managers and bosses know that employees are only there so they have the ability to care for themselves and their family?' One asked.
Adding. 'It isn't an option available to anyone, taking care of the kid is the only thing to do here. There's not even a choice.'
'My first boss was like this, took me years to realise it wasn't normal,' one shared.
'I worked for bosses like this, who had kids of their own. They drained the joy out of my job for 6 years. I resigned without a new job, that's how done I was,' another said.

Graham Thorpe death: England star's wife reveals tragic details
England cricket star Graham Thorpe asked his wife to help him end his life in a Swiss clinic before he was hit by a train, an inquest heard. The dad, 55, was found dead on August 4 after a heartbreaking battle with anxiety and depression for several years. His wife Amanda today told an inquest how Thorpe had begged her to help him die when his mental health 'spiralled'. She said: 'The weeks leading up to his death, he told me he doesn't want to be here any more. 'He asked me to help him end his life. 'He said he wants to go to Switzerland. I was in turmoil.' The Surrey left-hander had previously tried to take his own life in 2022 after losing his coaching job with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Amanda told the court Thorpe had found Covid lockdown 'very difficult' and 'stressful'. His dad Geoff agreed with the statement, saying: 'Everything was fine until Covid.' He said Thorpe was 'not a fella who likes to be cooped up' and also told how his son's life had come 'crashing down' when he lost his job with the ECB. Geoff continued: 'What you've got to realise is sometimes us chaps are a little bit macho – we can cope. 'In fact, we can't.' The inquest was told Thorpe was dismissed from his role following an 'incident' surrounding a viral video. According to reports at the time, the video was filmed after a dismal Ashes series which England lost 4-0. It showed Tasmanian police breaking up a drinking session involving both England and Australia players. The leak of the footage caused Thorpe to be dismissed from ECB and he ended up in hospital for eight weeks due to a suicide attempt in 2022. Assistant coroner Jonathan Stevens said: 'Things continued to go downhill, he was really struggling, had anxiety and insomnia and it was all really dark.' Thorpe made repeated threats to kill himself and by June 2024, he lost interest in food and 'wanted to hide away, totally isolated, in real crisis and despair', the court heard. On August 4 that year, he left home and was never seen alive again. Amanda believed he had gone out to walk the dog but saw the pet at home still so tried to call her husband. The court heard she then received a call from Thorpe's dad telling her: 'He's gone'. Amanda added: 'He never really recovered from (his first suicide) attempt. 'He came back from the tour of Australia in a terrible state – lots of things, the video, the environment, the set-up. 'To be sacked after that I think it was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him.' Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and scored a century on his first Ashes appearance, becoming the first England player to do so in 20 years. He was an England regular and went on to play 100 Tests, scoring 16 centuries and featuring 82 times for the ODI side, as well as enjoying a 17-year career with Surrey. His final Test appearance came in June 2005 before he was omitted from that summer's victorious Ashes series and called time on his international career. The inquest continues. Passenger tackled after bomb threat on flight sparks terror
A man has sparked chaos after announcing he had 'a bomb' during a flight to Glasgow on Sunday morning. Disturbing footage shows the moment passengers on the 7am easyJet flight from London's Luton Airport tackled the man after he yelled out 'Death to America' and 'Death to Trump.' He then screamed 'Find the bomb on the plane' before chanting 'Allahu Akbar,' which translates to 'God is great' in Arabic. A male passenger can be seen pinning him to the ground as another passenger sat on him, telling him to sit down and not move. Other passengers can then be heard questioning if he was with someone else and whether he 'had a bomb' before demanding to 'check his pockets.' 'Have you been drinking, have you been doing drugs?,' questions one passenger. Further footage shows authorities boarding the aircraft upon its arrival and arresting the man while he is still on the floor. 'You're calm now, are you going to be calm when I stand you up?,' asks an officer. 'I'm calm now,' replies the man. As he's being escorted off the plane he can be heard questioning the whereabouts of his phone and wallet to which a passenger yells 'F**k off,' drawing laughs from the plane. A spokesperson for easyJet told local media: 'Flight EZY609 from Luton to Glasgow this morning was met by police on arrival in Glasgow, where they boarded the aircraft and removed a passenger due to their behaviour on board. 'easyJet's crew are trained to assess all situations and act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety on the flight and other customers are not compromised at any time. 'The safety of our customers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority,' they said. A Police Scotland spokesperson also added that the man 'remains in custody.' 'We received a report of a man causing a disturbance on a flight arriving in Glasgow around 8.20am on Sunday, 27 July. 'Officers boarded the plane on its arrival and a 41-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody. Enquiries are continuing. 'At this time we believe the incident was contained and that nobody else was involved. 'We are aware of videos circulating online and these are being assessed by counter terrorism officers,' they said. One woman took to Facebook to detail and the 'frightening and traumatic' experience. 'This is what happened this morning. I was sleepy and tired and ten minutes before landing a random man stood up and shouted, 'I have a bomb and I am going to kill everyone. F**k Donald Trump.' 'It was so frightening and traumatic.' The incident comes amid President Trump's five-day visit to Scotland that has seen mass protests break out across the country, with residents displaying signs such as: 'Scotland hates Trump' and 'Veto the Cheeto.'
