Haitian police arrest a former senator accused of working with gangs to attack a peaceful community
Nenel Cassy was arrested on Saturday while he was at a restaurant in Petionville, a wealthy district of the capital, Port-au Prince, Haiti's National Police said in a post published on Facebook. The police shared photos of the former senator in handcuffs, next to heavily armed officers wearing ski masks.
Cassy, who was designated as a corrupt actor by the U.S. State Department in 2023, was accused by Haiti's police in February of backing gang members who launched attacks on Kenscoff, a wealthy neighborhood 10 kilometers (6 miles) outside Port-su-Prince, that had been largely untouched by Haiti's gang violence. Dozens of people were killed in the February attacks including farmers who worked in the nearby hills and a 2-month-old baby.
Gangs control 90% of Haiti's capital, according to the United Nations, and in recent months they have been launching attacks on previously peaceful communities in order to seize more territory.
More than 5,6000 people were reported killed in Haiti last year, with gang violence leaving more than one million people homeless in recent years, according to the U.N.

A 69-year-old Boston man is accused of trying to place a chemical-laced handkerchief over the mouth of a 14-year-old boy in what prosecutors are calling a "bizarre" assault. The incident happened in Roxbury at the corner of Dudley and Washington streets on July 28, shortly after noon. Willie Cowart, of Dorchester, was arrested and charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon (chemical handkerchief), the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said. Cowart pleaded not guilty to the charge in court last Wednesday. According to prosecutors, the boy told police he was waiting for a ride on a street corner "when an older man wearing a Hawaiian shirt approached, poured an unknown liquid on a red handkerchief, and tried to put the handkerchief over his mouth." The boy was able to run away to the Nubian Square bus station and called police. Officers found Cowart wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a red handkerchief shortly after, the district attorney's office said, and the boy positively identified him. Police searched Cowart's car and found chemical cleaning agents inside, according to prosecutors. "This is a strange, and extremely disturbing, set of facts," Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement Monday. "It doesn't take much imagination to appreciate how frightening it was for this young man to be standing on a street corner and suddenly be accosted in such a bizarre manner. I'm grateful that he suffered no apparent injuries." A judge released Cowart on personal recognizance and ordered him to stay away from the victim and the incident where the alleged assault occurred. He is due back in court on Oct. 29 for an appointment of counsel hearing, which a spokesperson for the district attorney's office said could be related to a court-appointed attorney work stoppage.

The search for a former U.S. soldier suspected of killing four people at a bar in Montana stretched into a fourth day Monday, with deputies scouring the mountainous terrain by foot and air after the man escaped in a stolen vehicle containing camping gear. Authorities say Michael Paul Brown, 45, fatally shot four people Friday morning at The Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda with a rifle that police believe was his personal weapon. He fled in a white pickup that he later ditched and stole a car stocked with clothes, shoes and other supplies. A female bartender and three male patrons were killed. The shooting rattled the tight-knit town of about 9,000 people, and many residents remain on high alert with the suspect still at large. Here's what is known about the search. Law enforcement officers from across the state have been brought in to assist with the search for Brown, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said. Search teams include multiple local, state, and federal agencies and are surveying the area both on the ground and by air. Helicopters whirred overhead throughout the weekend as Anaconda residents adjusted to daily life after the shooting. The effort initially concentrated on an area off Stumptown Road, west of Anaconda. Knudsen said investigators are now searching all possible options for Brown's whereabouts, including the woods where he hunted and camped in his youth. They suspect he may be armed. The woods southwest of Anaconda have been closed to the public by the National Forest System as the manhunt carries on. Business owners locked their doors Friday and sheltered inside with customers. A lockdown of the Stumptown Road area was lifted on Saturday, but many local businesses were slow to reopen. The victims were identified on Sunday as Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59, Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 64, David Allen Leach, 70, and Tony Wayne Palm, 74. All four were residents of Anaconda, which is situated between rugged mountains about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Butte. Robert Wyatt, 70, said he was neighbors with Leach at a public housing complex for elderly people and people with disabilities. Leach was deaf and kept mostly to himself, Wyatt said, but he was always happy to help his neighbors. In a town where 'everybody knows everybody,' the entire community is hurting, said resident David Jabarek, 70. Brown served in the Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, said Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009 and left military service at the rank of sergeant, Castro said. Brown lived next door to The Owl Bar, according to owner David Gwerder, who was not present during the shooting Friday morning. It was widely believed that Brown knew at least some of the victims. In a photo released by law enforcement, Brown appears gaunt, barefoot and wearing nothing but black shorts. Man arrested on suspicion of GBH after video appeared to show activist Tommy Robinson walking near scene
A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm in connection to an alleged assault at St Pancras station on 28 July. It comes after a video emerged, appearing to show the right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, walking back and forth next to a man lying motionless on the ground. Police said the man was arrested at Luton Airport shortly after 6.30pm, "following a notification that the man had boarded an incoming flight from Faro". "The man had been wanted for questioning after leaving the country to Tenerife in the early hours of 29 August following the incident at St Pancras," officers said. "He was arrested on suspicion of GBH (grievous bodily harm) and will now be taken to custody for questioning." Officers said they were called to the scene just after 8.40pm on Monday last week following reports of an assault. A man was taken to hospital with what police described as serious injuries. He was discharged last Wednesday.
