MLS suspension of Messi and Alba is 'draconian,' Inter Miami owner says
'They don't understand the decision,' owner Jorge Mas said Friday of the one-game suspensions. 'They don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension.'
Messi and Alba did not suit up for the match between the MLS and Liga MX of Mexico despite being voted to the game. Messi did not play to rest amid a packed schedule and Alba was dealing with a previous injury. Mas said the club made the decision for Messi and Alba to sit out of the All-Star Game.
Per MLS rules, any player who doesn't participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match.
The players will miss Miami's home match Saturday against FC Cincinnati, which sits atop the Eastern Conference standings. Both Messi and Alba practiced with the club on Friday in anticipation of playing in Saturday's match before MLS announced the suspension.
'I know Lionel Messi loves this league,' said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "I don't think there's a player — or anyone — who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision.
'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision.'
Garber added that the league will re-evaluate the policy and work with players to "determine how the rule should evolve.'
Mas said Inter Miami expressed its disagreement over the suspension and the rule. Mas also noted there were six MLS games Friday night less than 48 hours after an All-Star Game.
'That's not right,' Mas said. "That's not right to the players.'

Shedeur Sanders set to start against Panthers in Browns preseason opener
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — After an unexpected fall in the NFL draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders will make his NFL preseason debut for the Cleveland on Friday night when he starts the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. The 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award winner played for his father Deion Sanders for two seasons each at Jackson State and Colorado. Deion Sanders said he's already spoken with his son three times. 'But it's going to be a little weird. It's going to be a little strange,' Deion Sanders said. 'It really is. I got to admit that. But I'm praying for him, and God has set him up and placed him in the perfect position that he needs to be in. It's going to be a problem after tonight, though. I promise you that.' He said his son is well prepared and is approaching it like a regular season game. 'That's how he's always approached everything, to prepare and approach it like this is it,' Sanders said. "He's thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. He don't get caught up in all the rhetoric in the media. He's far beyond that. He was coached through that when he was a kid. We've always gone through that.' Sanders has been bothered by shoulder soreness in recent days, but Stefanski said Wednesday that's no longer an issue. He played in 50 college games, completing 1,267 of 1,808 passes for 14,353 yards with 134 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also ran for 17 touchdowns. Sanders will see time against the Panthers' first-team defense. Carolina coach Dave Canales said his starters will play about one or two series, depending on the length of the possessions. Not everyone is an admirer of Bumrah's availability algorithm
A disclaimer to open — this is not a roast of Jasprit Bumrah or a slur on his achievements or his abilities. Bumrah is one of Indian cricket's modern greats, a tri-format giant, with an impressive haul of wickets, from a superb set of performances leading to a superb set of numbers. Over 2024-25, Bumrah was outstanding in a largely un-outstanding BGT series for India. What's happening around Bumrah now though is a tug-of-war of brand persona and performance impact from the recently concluded England v India Test series. Bumrah produced two impressive first-innings fifers in it but without his usual sledgehammer impact. His series concluded with 14 wickets in 119 overs @25 econ 3.04. His work-load management mismatch – India winning the two Tests he skipped for fear of aggravating back strain – has caused a social media sniper exchange with BCCI's timed leaks about its future strictness against 'picking and choosing.' The science first. The latest studies, circa 2022, around lumbar stress fracture in elite cricket fast bowlers present a range of bone-density readings on specific spinal regions, that bowlers like Bumrah – and his medical team - are required to keep tabs on, following Bumrah's back surgery in 2023. In this series, Bumrah was handled as carefully as possible and the questions raised are cricketing, with no prior knowledge of his latest medical reports. In Leeds, with England chased 373 to win in the second innings, Bumrah bowled more overs than the other quicks – 19 to Mohammed Siraj's 14. After the match, criticism of the profligacy of the other Indian bowlers occupied more attention and sidestepped the question of whether their No.1 bowler could have bowled more. Bumrah was not going to play in the second Test a few days later, anyway. Surely captain Shubman Gill did not lose track of who was available in his final roll of the dice? Surely Bumrah wanted to grab the ball from Gill's hand and take a shot? There is no explanation why he did not or was not bowled on the evening of June 24 when the Lord's Test began on July 10. After Leeds, it was soundly being argued that at 0-1 down – with Edgbaston only beginning on July 2 – playing Bumrah would give India a better shot at 1-1. Rather than face 0-2 at Lord's when Bumrah returned. However, what if the bone density readings recommended rest. Fine. The Headingley euphoria sidestepped the question about Bumrah's availability. The series had many examples of players putting their body on the line. Ben Stokes bowled himself to a standstill and a grade three muscle tear. What Rishabh Pant (broken foot) or Shoaib Bashir (broken finger) or Chris Woakes (dislocated shoulder) chose to do regardless of how that would impact them later. Muscle tears and fractures are not the same as spinal stress fractures. The question of putting career at long-term risk over short-term team gain is only answered by the players' individual view of his situation. Then came the Oval release. At 3.10pm on August 1, just before the start of day two of the final Test, the BCCI's X handle posted that Bumrah had been 'released' from the squad. 'Released' means a cricketer can leave the venue. At the Oval, Bumrah was not seen anywhere on TV unlike previously. He may have been addressing medical issues but we don't know. 'Released' meant taking the choice to step away from his junior teammates, who would have lapped up 'Jassi bhai's' advice on lengths, lines and the various ticks and tells of the English batters in the most bowler-friendly conditions of the series. Mentor in the backroom instead of magician on the field. An image suddenly popped up. Photos of Anil Kumble, arm in sling, after shoulder surgery, at the India camp in Chennai before the start of the 2001 India-Australia series, working with the bowlers. It was Kumble and his mates, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad who first banded the bowlers together into a tight unit. Their idea was to be senior buddies, counsellors and gurus of the kind they had not found when they came into the Indian team in the Kapil Dev era. India's bowling brotherhood, set up by Kumble & Co in the early 2000s, has kept paying forward – Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan,nIshant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and then onto Bumrah himself. The Oval 'release' doesn't automatically mean Bumrah sees himself as a cut above his peers. Or indeed that he hollers at his juniors frustrated at their over-dependence on his wicket-taking. But to disengage from a young pack growing in strength and confidence is to deprive himself of their energy, joy and camaraderie. His availability algorithm has also quelled the possibility of Captain Bumrah even before the ascent of Gill. A Test captain only available for three Tests across a staggered random time-line is undesirable and unfeasible. One clear misstep has also taken place in Bumrah's name. After the series, the first visual of five on Bumrah's Instagram post of Tuesday features him back to camera with words: 'We take back great memories from a highly competitive and enthralling Test series. Looking forward to what's next'. While trying to put persona and performance in lockstep, Bumrah's management team's first choice in Instagram is a solo shot of a cricketer who didn't have the most important role to play in that come-from-behind series result. That's like an over-eager photo bomb.

Have Nair and Sudharsan done enough?
Mumbai: Karun Nair and B Sai Sudharsan didn't have a troubled time at the crease during most of their innings in the just concluded Anderson-Tendulkar series, but they weren't able to fully cash in on their chances either. Karun Nair in action. (AP) This English summer was just beautiful for the batters. With the groundsmen dishing out featherbeds, it became a story of runs and tons – the 7000-run mark being crossed for the first time in a five-Test series. In times like these, when runs were so plentiful, the failings become glaring. Karun Nair averaged 25.62 in the series and Sai Sudarshan 23.33, their numbers are dwarfed by Shubman Gill's 75.40, KL Rahul's 53.20, Rishabh Pant's 68.42, Washington Sundar's 47.33 and Ravindra Jadeja's 86.00. When the Indian selectors next sit down to analyse the England tour, Nair and Sudharsan's names will figure in 'not up to the mark' column. There were times in the series when both of them displayed some grit, but whether it is enough for them to keep their spots is the question. The competition for places in the India side is always intense. Ajit Agarkar & Co have to ask whether they go back to the likes of Sarfaraz Khan or Shreyas Iyer or have Nair and Sudharsan done enough to convince the selectors that they need to be given one more chance. The prolific Abhimanyu Easwaran is already in the squad, waiting for his chance. Nair's overall experience allied with the years playing in English conditions was one of the reasons Nair got the nod for the series. His form in the tour games was good as well and the selectors couldn't take a chance with the big hole that Virat Kohli's retirement had left. For the balance of the side, they needed a seasoned cricketer to fill the void, bind the side when the pressure was on. There was a doubt how the young batters would hold up. Shubman Gill was unproven as a leader and untested in the England conditions. He was tried at a new position at No 4, if he failed, Nair could fill in. It was Yashavi's first Test tour to England; Pant's form leading into the series was a concern while Sudharsan was also making his debut. Now that the young lot has exceeded expectations, Nair is on shaky ground. The main goal is to build a core for the future, the selectors may see value in adding one more young player to the line-up in place of a 33-year-old. For Nair, it was a critical series. Getting a chance after eight years, he knew he had to make it count. There were 12 hundreds from the India team, but Nair missed out, unable to build on his starts, getting out on 57, 40, 31, 26 and 20. He will be banking on his half-century in the last Test to get him a longer run. The selectors will weigh in on the quality and value of his 57, the top score in India's first innings of the final Test. SAI DEBATE From the three Tests matches he played against England, Sai Sudharsan's promise was there to see but he is not a finished product. There are areas of his game where he needs to work on after repeatedly getting out in similar manner. The selectors will have to consider whether to give the young left-handed batter the benefit of doubt as it was his first series in the hope that he will find his feet in the next series or he needs to go back to the drawing board and show them he has got more in him? One of the rare batters in the modern era who stands upright, Sudarshan needs to tighten his technique. In India, it won't affect his run scoring but when the conditions are slightly challenging and the ball is moving he can get exposed. England were dismissing him on the leg-side. Batting legend Ricky Ponting, during his commentary, pointed towards the southpaw's head position which was resulting in him falling over trying to play the fuller swinging balls on the leg-stump. The 23-year-old batter wisely didn't try to change his game during the middle of the series. When you change one aspect of your game there can be an impact on the other aspects of your game. Sudharsan has a superb off-side game with a cover drive to die for. Head position is critical in technique but he can't tinker his game without ensuring his strong points are intact. Any change has to be done with careful evaluation, have time to test it in the nets and domestic games before he tries it in the international arena. Sudharsan's knock of 61 in the first innings of the fourth Test at Old Trafford was invaluable. Some of the strokes he played were breathtaking, especially the off-side drives, highlighting his abundant potential. The selectors will need to take the call whether it would be a good idea for him to play a full Ranji season, build his game and come back. It will also depend on whether captain Shubman Gill is backing him. Gill has seen enough of him at Gujarat Titans where their opening partnership is a super success. The think-tank will be keenly watching his performances in the Duleep Trophy.
