Claudia Winkleman's battle with chronic eye condition

Daily Mirror13 hours ago

The television presenter was awarded an MBE for her services to broadcasting in the King's Birthday Honours
Television personality Claudia Winkleman has opened up about her health struggles, revealing a chronic eye condition left her 'never really' able to see her own face in the mirror. The 53-year-old star, who yesterday was awarded an MBE by King Charles, has undergone various operations to try to correct her vision.
Previously the Traitors host has spoken about "how blind" she is as she struggled with myopia, or short-sightedness, for years. In an interview with the How To Fail podcast last November, she explained: "I've always had terrible eyesight, which goes back to the blurriness of the paintings I like and the blurriness of how I really like life to be.

"I've had a couple of operations since then because I was just banging into walls. But now I wear lenses or glasses or whatever." She continued: "A lit candle and everything is just a bit fuzzy around the outside.

'I was born, I think, with minus 15, so I've never really been able to see my face. It's all guesswork.
"But everything is ish, it's just a vague idea, which is how I'd like to live. I don't want to live in 'perfect land'. I want to live in 'fuzzy world '.
"If there's perfect here — people who want things to look good and ordered and alphabetised and organised — and then there's the other end, I'm past the other end. I like irregular and ramshackle and messy. Just look at the way I do my eye make-up. I'm not very good at neat."
As reported by The Sun, she admitted that she has previously struggled to read an autocue while presenting. She also revealed that her vision problems have changed over time as she went from being short-sighted to long-sighted.
In 2021 she said: 'I can't even begin to tell you how blind I am. It's embarrassing. I can't read the autocue. My eyes have deteriorated so badly, I'm not meant to drive. I am doing the wrong job."

In another interview on Gabby Logan's podcast The Mid Point in December, Claudia said: "I've had lens replacement. I've had so many operations on my eyes. I had a lens replacement in my left eye because my astigmatism was so bad. I was minus 16, but that was 14 years ago.
"Then I had a little fiddle with it, but because I was so short-sighted, by fixing it I'm now long-sighted, so I can't really read anymore. I can with glasses—I've got plus 2.5—but I can't read The Bee Sting with those glasses and that light."

Yesterday (June 13), Claudia was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's Birthday Honours alongside her Strictly Come Dancing co-host, Tess Daly.
'I am incredibly grateful to receive this honour,' Claudia said. 'It's a real privilege to work with extraordinarily talented people and I have only got this because of them.
'So this is for the BBC, the traitors and the faithful, for pianos and for the cha cha. I will buy a hat and am taking my mum. I am ridiculously lucky and will celebrate with Tess by doing a paso doble.'

'Scared' Gemma Collins 'calls 999 after receiving abusive letter at her home'

The Only Way Is Essex icon Gemma Collins reportedly had to call the police after receiving a 'threatening and abusive' letter at her home A 'scared' Gemma Collins reportedly called the police after she received a 'threatening and abusive' letter at her home from a man who wrote about his extreme dislike for her. The former The Only Way Is Essex star, 44, called the cops, who then visited her home in the countryside. Following the reported incident, it has been said that the TV personality has upped her security with round the clock dog patrols and loved ones keeping her company. According to an insider, the Celebrity Big Brother icon was left 'shaken and very scared for her safety' after receiving the letter. ‌ ‌ The source said the abusive letter was from a "man expressing his extreme dislike for her and using menacing language." They added: "It was really nasty and made reference to tracking her down, so she called the police straight away." The Mirror have reached out to Gemma's representatives for comment. The source went on to tell The Sun that Gemma has been grateful to the police for their help in the "ongoing investigation". In May, Gemma revealed on a podcast that she had to deal with stalkers over the years, which "played havoc on her mind". Gemma said: 'No one would believe the bloody crap I've had to deal with. I've had a woman stalker who wrote me a letter in white gloves and wanted to kill me. "You know, people would wish me dead. I'd get all sorts at the shop. Weird. People are weird. And that's why in a way I came away from my shop in the end.' ‌ Meanwhile, Gemma has been struggling with her health in recent weeks. Earlier this week, a bedridden Gemma took to Instagram to share an update about her health, revealing that she had been seriously unwell for a number of weeks. In her post, which included a photo of the reality TV star laying in bed, she wrote: "Hey guys sorry been quiet i have Pneumonia. I'm not as fast or on it as I usually am on the daily. I am still honouring my work commitments which is taking every bit of energy I have but will be back entertaining you all soon." In a further update on her Instagram Story, Gemma revealed she was receiving treatment via a drip and had been seen by a doctor. ‌ Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs typically caused by an infection, and while most people recover within two to four weeks, infants, the elderly, and those with heart or lung conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness and may require hospitalisation. Luckily, Gemma has not had to go to hospital, but speaking to The Mirror, she admitted that she felt as though she was "dying".

The 36-year-old, whose real name is Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, has some prior experience on the hit BBC show. He was a contestant in the 2024 Christmas special where he was paired with professional dancer Nancy Xu, 33. There are hopes he will be able to work around his busy schedule that relates to Gladiators - which traditionally films across the summer. ‌ While Strictly usually begins airing in August each year, the contestants are secured weeks in advance and immediately begin training in an effort to gain confidence on the dance floor ahead of the live shows beginning. A source has told The Sun: 'Bosses have been desperate to get Nitro on the series for a while. They were in talks last year but couldn't get the timings to marry up with his work." The source continues: 'He was a huge hit at Christmas prancing around in lycra and showing off his biceps. Producers were also impressed with his dancing." The source also explained that they hoped Nitro's inclusion could attract a whole new range of fans to Strictly - as bosses are hoping to capitalize on the family friendly success of Gladiators. The Mirror has contacted the BBC and representatives of Harry for comment. Strictly has continued to draw scorn and scandal in recent years after accusations of abuse by professional dancers and star signings disgracing themselves with ungentlemanly behaviour. Last year, Go Compare singer Wynne Evans raised eyebrows when he ran his hands over dancer Katy Jones. ‌ He later caused scandal during the 2025 Strictly Live Tour when crude comments he made behind the scenes were made public. Fellow 2024 star Jamie Borthwick was engulfed in scandal this month as it was revealed he used a derogatory term to describe the people of Blackpool when the BBC show filmed there. A dark cloud hovered over Striclty last year when actress Amanda Abbington made accusations she was abused by professional dancer Giovani Pernice. A BBC investigation was held while Giovanni walked away from the show while protesting his innocence. Fellow professional dancer Graziano Di Prima admitted he kicked celebrity partner Zara McDermott during rehearsals and he left the BBC show. ‌ Strictly is expected to continue this year, with judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Motsi Mabuse and Craig Revel Horwood all set to return. It may be the final time that Craig takes up a seat at the table as he has long vowed to quit the series after he turned 60. With that landmark passed this year, some fans fear he could retire at the conclusion of the upcoming season. However, the star appeared to backtrack on his promise last year. He told The Mirror: "I have no intention of quitting because it's a fantastic Saturday job that I intend to do into my 80s, as long as I'm still compos mentis, darling! and if I haven't been cancelled before then!"
