Nature Play WA and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale's annual Muddy Buddy event attracts hundreds of families

West Australian28-06-2025
It was gumboots galore at Jarrahdale Oval on Saturday as hundreds of kids climbed up the muddy mountain and jumped in muddy puddles as part of the annual Muddy Buddies event.
Families queued at the gate well ahead of opening time to ensure they made the most of every sludgy second.
In its fourth year, the event hosted by Nature Play WA and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale was extended to a two-day affair after more than 3500 tickets sold out in less than 48 hours.
Some kids were seasoned mud veterans, while others savoured every messy moment because they usually 'aren't allowed to get dirty'.
Sarah Bridle and her three kids have been attending the Muddy Buddies event for years now, telling The Sunday Times it was a great excuse for her kids to get dirty with no consequences.
'It's an excuse for them to get muddy and us as parents are not gonna growl at them,' she said as her almost two-year-old stomped in the mud pit.
'Normally at home, you're like, don't get too dirty, but here it's just an excuse for them to have a great time.'
This was the case for a lot of families who travelled hours to be in Jarrahdale and get involved in the muddy madness, but for others — who lived on properties nearby — playing in puddles of mud was just another day.
Gemma Watts described her five-year-old son Dimitri as a 'bit of a nutter' because he is always playing in mud.
'I do everything in the mud, I love being in the mud and being dirty, it's my favourite place,' Dimitri said.
Similarly, four-year-old James Graham was a pro in the mud pit. His grandma, Cheryl, said he's happiest when he's playing in mud.
'I see real contentment when he is playing in the mud, and just joy,' the 69-year-old said.
'He plays in the mud every day when we empty the horse troughs . . . he doesn't realise how lucky he is that other kids don't have the opportunity that he has.'
Nature Play WA executive officer Kelsie Prabawa-Sear said having fun is not the only side effect of playing in mud.
'I think we parents need reminding that a bit of dirt is very good for kids and it's an important part of a healthy, happy childhood,' Dr Prabawa-Sear said.
'Not letting kids get dirty deprives them of important sensory experiences and exposure to good bacteria.'
Shire president Rob Coales said he hopes the 'flagship event' will continue to grow and be enjoyed by the community.
'We want a community where everyone feels at home and feels special,' Mr Coales said.
'I think in these days of technology, young people spend too much time indoors on devices, so this is an example where local government can put an event on . . . and do something that the young children come out and enjoy.
'I would love to see the event grow, whether we can do it twice a year, whether there's an appetite for that.'

Anna Friel lost her entire wardrobe when she split from Darren Day

Anna Friel lost her entire wardrobe when she split from her former boyfriend Darren Day. The 49-year-old actress dated the entertainer back in the 1990s and she's now confessed she regrets leaving all of her clothes behind at his home when they broke up in 1997 - because she never got them back. When asked if she has any fashion regrets, Anna told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Only about the things I lost. I had the best 1990s capsule wardrobe and when I split up with my first boyfriend, Darren Day, I was so distraught, I grabbed the essentials and left my whole wardrobe there, including an incredible Afghan coat from the Kings Road [ in London]. "I remember years later calling to ask for my clothes back and he'd ditched them all." Anna went on to reveal she now prefers vintage clothes to buying new pieces and spends a lot of time hunting for bargains in second-hand shops. She added: "My great passion is vintage - the materials are superior and I love pieces with a story - so I hunt down vintage shops whenever I travel. "I've been shooting in Bristol recently and found a red 1980s jumpsuit. Palma, Mallorca, is a great place to shop for unique embroidery and leather shoes and bags." Anna also explained she's ditched heels for flats in recent years and her favourite shoes are a pair of Adidas trainers. She told the publication: "My favourites are a chunky pair of red Adidas Campus 00s that I have in navy too. "I love shoes and I'm a huge Terry de Havilland fan because they were the only heels I could walk in, but I prefer looking at them rather than wearing them now." In the interview, Anna also shared her top beauty tips revealing she uses a concealer and highlighter by RMS as well as Chanel's Lip and Cheek Balm in Number 1. Anna insisted she now wears less powder and prefers a dewy look. She also credited her 20-year-old daughter Gracie with introducing her to a fragrance brand called Moods and she is now a big fan of the company's roll-on perfume Frisky.

Mary Austin calls Freddie Mercury secret daughter claims 'astonishing'

Mary Austin has declared it would be "astonishing" if Freddie Mercury had fathered a secret daughter without her knowledge. A new book titled Love, Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones claims the Queen frontman became a dad to a little girl - named only as B - following an affair with a friend's wife in 1976 and the child is said to have inherited diaries written by the singer in the run-up to her birth. However, Mary - who was close to the singer for two decades - is adamant it's unlikely Freddie could not have kept such huge news secret. She told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Freddie had a glorious openness, and I cannot imagine he would have wanted to, or been able to, keep such a joyful event a secret, either from me or other people closest to him ... "The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret. I've never known of any child, or of any diaries. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it, that would be astonishing to me." She also insisted she had never seen Freddie write a diary and she would be "very surprised" if the singer had started a journal in his later years. Speaking about her decision to break her silence on the reports, Mary added: "As this particular narrative has grown, I had to say something to prevent my silence being interpreted as confirmation - speaking now is not a decision I have taken lightly. "I wanted to carefully consider everything being said so I could approach the topic responsibly, most of all for Freddie, who is not here to speak for himself.' The 49-year-old known as B provided a response to Mary's statements through the book's author Jones, saying: "I am devastated by Mary Austin's alleged response. "For 34 years, the truth of Freddie's life has been distorted, twisted and rewritten, but she said nothing … Here, she has not yet read the book, yet she apparently makes this statement. I don't understand why ..." In Love, Freddie, B admitted she struggled with the public mourning for the singer, who died of an AIDS-related illness when she was 15 years old. An extract from the book, due to be published in September and which was obtained by the Daily Mail, stated: "I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. "For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him and accept that he wouldn't be there to share the happy moments with us. "For 30 years, while the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury's life, his music and all that he had been, I needed to have my dad just for me and my family. How could I have spoken before?"

British singer Jessie J shares emotional health update following breast cancer diagnosis and surgery

British pop star Jessie J has revealed she will undergo further surgery, all while still in the thick of recovery from surgery for breast cancer. Since publicly announcing her diagnosis in June, the 37-year-old singer, whose real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish, has been open about her health journey, sharing both the highs and lows with her fans. In her latest update posted on Friday, Cornish expressed her determination to keep doing what she loves — being a mother to her two-year-old son, Sky, and making music — despite needing another surgery this year. 'I can rest, parent AND release new music,' she shared on Instagram. 'I didn't leave a major label after 18 years to be scared to rewrite the rules to fit around my life and health. 'I just have to make it realistic for what I can deliver in all roles in my life.' Now seven weeks post-surgery, the singer acknowledged her recovery is still ongoing but her passion for music and life remains strong. 'I'm still in the thick of recovery and my body is still finding its way,' Cornish added. 'But I LOVE music and I LOVE my life and I want to LIVE in the moment. 'Instead of stopping and disappearing and waiting for the timing to be perfect to release music again. 'I am choosing to carry on.' Her heartfelt message follows a difficult week — just days earlier, the hitmaker revealed on her Instagram stories that she had been hospitalised due to an infection. Since announcing her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis on June 4, Cornish has been praised for her willingness to share personal details about her journey. 'I just wanted to be open and share it — one, because selfishly, I don't talk about it enough. I'm not processing it because I'm working so hard,' the pop star explained at the time. 'I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me — with other people giving me their love and support, and also their own stories. 'I'm an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much — similar, and worse.' On June 24, Cornish posted an emotional carousel of photos following the breast cancer surgery, including pictures of her partner, Chanan Colman, and their son, Sky. '!! Blood warning !! This post is some of the honest lows and highs of the last 48 hours,' she bravely posted. 'I will always show the good and hard bits of any journey I go through. 'Grateful to my doctor/surgeon, the nurses who cared for me, and all my family and friends who visited. 'I am home now, to rest and wait for my results. 'Chanan is in a nurse outfit. No no, he isn't, but funny to imagine. 'Still hugging everyone going through something tough right now. We all got this!' In a recent interview, Cornish recalled breaking down in tears while looking at her post-surgery scars and described a moment shared with her mother. 'The other night, Mum was massaging my boob for me, because I can't touch the scars,' she told The Sunday Times. 'And I started sobbing, 'I can't believe this has happened.' She was like, 'I wish it was me,' and then I'm crying, she's crying… I'm so glad it's not her.' Despite her health setbacks, Cornish isn't letting anything slow her down. In her most recent health update, the pop star also teased the release of new music on August 29.
