Detroit Tigers fan in Alabama has been rooting for the team since 1984
I grew up a Detroit Tigers fan in rural Alabama in the 1980s.
Where I'm from, all we really had was college football. You were either an Alabama or Auburn football fan.
I have family that lives in Lincoln Park, so our family vacations would consist of driving to Detroit for a week during summer break. I had became a Tigers fan just from watching them on TV during the '84 season.
Living in Atlanta Braves country meant that it was rare to get to see them on TV much. So during the 1985 season, we went on vacation to Detroit, and I got to live my childhood fantasy of seeing a game in Detroit.
Your guide to Tigers Opening Day 2025: Parking, tickets, food, things to do, more
It was my first baseball game ever to see in person. I still remember, to this day, going to the game. The Tigers played the Mariners. I still have my ticket stub somewhere. I fell hopelessly in love with the Tigers from that point on.
I've had a few great memories of games there from the past. I remember having a hot dog, having my first beer at a game. I remember getting Bo Jackson's autograph, of all places in Detroit, instead of here in Alabama. (Editor's note: Jackson was a running back at Auburn University.)
In 2018, I got to bring my family to a game in Detroit, and see my son have the time of his life at the game, just as I did so many years before. I have been a Tigers fan from probably age 9 or 10 till now. Even during the lean years, I've never once considered jumping ship, even when Atlanta was rolling in the 90s.
I remember the feeling I had watching the Tigers win it all in '84, the anger I had seeing Kansas City win it all in '85, or the heartbreak falling in the playoffs in '87.
I'm in my early 50s now, and hopeful for the future of our team.

Our friends over at Draft Wire did just that recently, posting a first-round mock as the NFL heads into Organized Team Activities. The Cincinnati Bengals had the 24th pick in this mock, as the order was set using reverse Super Bowl LX odds, giving the New Orleans Saints the No. 1 pick. RELATED: Bengals news: Jermaine Burton buzz, practice urgency and more The Bengals don't have too many cornerbacks entering a contract year, but one of them is former second-round pick Cam Taylor-Britt. The Bengals could be in the market for a starting cornerback next season, which makes the pick made by Curt Popejoy sensical. With the 24th pick, the Bengals selected Alabama cornerback Domani Jackson. Listed at 6-1, 195 pounds, Jackson started all 13 games last season in his first season with the Crimson Tide after two seasons at USC. He recorded 52 tackles, two interceptions, seven passes defended and had a forced fumble. In three seasons between the Tide and the Trojans, Jackson has recorded 87 tackles in 33 games with two interceptions and 11 passes defended. Auburn football lands commitment from three-star 2026 athlete
Auburn football lands commitment from three-star 2026 athlete After a going through a commitment drought, Auburn landed a quality back from Mississippi on Monday. It has been over two months since Auburn football has landed a commitment for its 2026 recruiting class. That changed Monday as a three-star athlete from Mississippi announced his pledge to Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. Eric Perry, a three-star athlete from Desoto Central High School in Southaven, Mississippi, made the announcement Monday after taking an official visit to the Plains over the weekend. Perry has received offers from Jackson State, North Alabama, and Sacremento State, among others. However, he could not turn down an offer from the program the caliber of Auburn, and jumped at the first opportunity. "I just wanted to play at the highest level in the SEC," Perry said in an interview with Auburn Undercover. "I really didn't want to play anywhere else. They had reached out to me and I was real excited because my cousin played at Mississippi State and so to me, that was the standard for where I had to be. It was really the first time I came here." Perry is an elite talent with the skill set to play multiple positions. He plays quarterback for Desoto Central, however, Auburn plans to use him as a running back. The 6-0, 195-pound speedster has rushed for 1600 yards and 18 scores over the last two seasons as a quarterback, while passing for 2,832 yards and 19 touchdowns in that same time frame. Perry is the No. 35 player from Mississippi according to 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 cycle, and is the No. 87 overall athlete from the class. He is the eighth player to commit to Auburn's 2026 class, and is the first running back to do so.
