James Gunn on Henry Cavill's Superman exit: 'It was really unfair to him and a total bummer'
In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, DC Studios co-head James Gunn opened up about the difficult conversation he had with Cavill when he and Peter Safran took over the reins of DC Studios in 2022.
Reflecting on the situation, Gunn revealed his admiration for Cavill and left the door open for the actor's future in the franchise.
'It's terrible. Believe it or not, the day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios,' recalled Gunn. 'The day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I was like, 'What is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman.' It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.'
According to Gunn, the circumstances surrounding their appointment were less than ideal, with various competing visions for the DC brand at the time.
'There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people were… They had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation for [WBD CEO] David Zaslav,' said Gunn. 'We came in, and that was really unfortunate. I'm like, 'This poor guy.''
Despite the upheaval, Gunn emphasised Cavill's professionalism and grace when they informed him of the decision to move in a different direction.
'He was an absolute gentleman and a great guy about it,' Gunn shared. 'He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to coming from you guys.' And I'm like, 'That's a class act.''
Though Cavill will not be reprising his role as Superman, Gunn confirmed discussions were had about future opportunities within the restructured DCU.
'I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something,' said Gunn.
The upcoming 'Superman' film, starring Corenswet, will be the first official instalment of the new DC Universe, kicking off its 'Gods and Monsters' phase under the creative vision of Gunn and Safran.
While Cavill's time as the Man of Steel may be over, fans can still hold out hope for his return to the DC world in a brand-new role.

'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' box office collection Day 6: Pedro Pascal starrer sees another drop; earns Rs 24.71 crore total
Marvel Studios' latest release, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps', continued its theatrical run in India with a declining box office performance on its sixth day. According to early estimates on sacnilk, the film earned approximately Rs 1.05 crore (India net) on Wednesday across all languages, bringing its total collection to an estimated Rs 24.71 crore. Box Office Collection Break Down Despite opening with a promising Rs 5.5 crore on Day 1, the film has since witnessed fluctuations in daily earnings. After a decent weekend haul of Rs 20.1 crore, Monday brought a significant dip to Rs 1.66 crore, followed by a marginal growth on Tuesday with Rs 1.9 crore. Wednesday's earnings suggested a further decline in numbers, considering that the movie recorded its lowest collection to date. Tough Competition While the film has found moderate success at the Indian box office, it must be noted that it can be linked to the film facing stiff competition from the Bollywood blockbusters like 'Saiyaara', which is on its way to the Rs 300 crore mark. Additionally, the animated epic 'Mahavatar Narsimha' has also eaten into the superhero film's market share, especially in regional circuits. Hollywood Films In India With just one day left to end its first week, 'The Fantastic Four' is expected to cross the Rs 25 crore mark in India, though its long-term performance might not be able to match the success of recent Hollywood releases like the DC superhero film 'Superman' which earned Rs 35 crore by the end of week 1 and the dino film 'Jurassic World Rebirth', which lapped up an impressive Rs 56.25 crore in its first week, with an estiamted Rs 26.1 crore raked in, just from its English shows. Directed by Matt Shakman , 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps 'stars Pedro Pascal , Vanessa Kirby , Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Julia Garner , Sarah Niles, and Ralph Ineson . The film marks the introduction of Marvel's First Family in the MCU. The film is also crutical as it sets the ball rolling for the next big blockbusters 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Avengers: Secret Wars'.

Will Robert Pattinson's Batman be Integrated into the DC Universe? James Gunn Spills the Beans
James Gunn has shared a major update on Robert Pattinson's Batman. While the fans are highly anticipating the second part of the trilogy, they are also wondering if the movie will be released under DCU or a separate banner. According to the media reports, Matt Reeves' The Batman Universe will be released under the Elseworlds banner, instead of DC. While the change in the movie's banner comes after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC studios as co-heads, the fans are disappointed, as they wanted Pattinson's Batman to collide with other superheroes of the Universe. James Gunn's take on Robert Pattinson's Batman existing outside of DCU In conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the DC head confirmed that they are not going for Pattinson's film to be included in the studios. Gunn shared, 'I've said it before, we've talked about it before, so it's not what's happening right now. Everything's in flux, so we'll figure out what we're doing next.' While the fans demand that Batman cross paths with other superheroes, it does not fit well with Gunn and Safran 's vision for the studios. DC makers are currently working on The Brave and The Bold, wherein they will showcase the journey of the Caped Crusader as he goes on to become a crime fighter. With the stories and the timelines moving ahead, Pattinson's Batman does not enter the scenes everywhere in the near future, and hence, Gunn has decided to keep the film out of the studios. As for the update on The Batman II, the script is ready, as announced by Matt Reeves. He took to his Instagram account and shared a picture of himself and the co-writer, with the script on the table and the Batman logo in focus. The movie is expected to hit theaters in October 2027.
