Detroit's oldest dance academy celebrates 41 years with special performance this weekend

Yahooa day ago

Despite 41 years of activity and service in the community, there's a Detroit arts gem many still don't know about.
Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy, founded in 1984 by Kresge Artist Fellow Debra White-Hunt, has spent decades welcoming and nurturing dancers of all ages and experience levels and will present its annual student dance concert on Saturday, June 14.
The theme of this year's concert is 'Higher.'
'It's celebrating how we took this year to look at where we are, who we are, and think of what more we can do in this life, in this world,' said White-Hunt. ''Higher' was the word that came to me, so that's the word we have been working with all year, all the students and all the teachers: 'How can we go higher?' Each teacher or special guest that choreographs, they take that theme and make it their own.
'I have a beginning ballet class, and for them I'm using Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground.' And you know part of the lyrics say, 'Don't let nobody take you to a low level, keep on going until you reach higher ground.' The Acorn Society, a group of young dancers that we've seen some potential in — their music is 'Anxiety' by Doechii, and the thought behind that is letting go, reaching higher and letting anxiety go out. We have 38 dances; the dances aren't long, because we want to make sure they're complete. And sometimes, when you're younger, you're not ready to do a long dance, so they're short and sweet, and they keep moving.'
The concert will also feature a segment of daddy-daughter dance numbers. Set to the music of Michael Jackson, students from age 8 up through 'probably somewhere near 70' will dance with their fathers in celebration of Father's Day.
'That's a very special one for me,' said White-Hunt, 'because my dad was always in it with me. For many, many years, he was always the oldest student here — when he passed away in 2016, he was 95 and still dancing. I think that's where I get my longevity in dancing. He passed away in June, and the concert was in June. The other dads were devastated because they had bonded so much. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I decided to go on and be in the dance as if he were there, and we dedicated it to him and my father-in-law.'

White-Hunt called the performance 'a labor of love.'
'We dance because we breathe,' she said. 'Our teachers are very passionate and dedicated to the legacy that we have started here. We have nine teachers, and seven of them grew up here. They went away to school and came back to continue to feed and grow the academy, and so for me and my husband, Bruce, it's very special to see them develop as young women and men, to bring forth the next generation of dancers.
'Sometimes, over the years, we've been so busy that I haven't really been able to smell our flowers. But one day, it hit me, (some students) were my age when they started, and now they're all grown up. So I believe that we are doing something really great for the community, and that was our vision and our mission, to establish something that last long beyond our years. We're in the fourth and fifth generations right now of students who've become teachers with us. A couple of the teachers have daughters and sons that are now old enough to take dance, and we welcome that because they are the ones that will be the next leaders."
Rochelle Riley, director of arts and culture for the city of Detroit, included White-Hunt in the city's Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship's (ACE) inaugural class of Detroit ACE honorees in 2022.
'If only Detroit knew what it has had in Debra White-Hunt and her founding of the Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy 41 years ago,' Riley said. 'Her dream-turned-reality-turned-training ground has birthed professional dancers, teachers, studio owners. While more than 15,000 students owe her a debt of thanks, Detroit owes one as well to the city's oldest, largest dance academy.'
The academy teaches students as young as age 2 and has no upper age limit. No dance background is required. To sign up for classes, go to detroitwindsordance.org, call 313-872-7200, or drop by in person at 3031 W. Grand Blvd., Suite 260, during open hours.
Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy will perform 'Higher' on Saturday, June 14, at 6 p.m. at Detroit School of the Arts, 123 Selden St. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at detroitwindsordance.org.

With a Foreword by Brunello Cucinelli, This Coffee Table Book Is a Father's Day Must-Have

John Pearson is known the world over as the first male supermodel, but it's the role of father that he considers his most important. 'I lost my father when I was 11, he was only 45,' he tells Robb Report. 'I fully support men speaking candidly, expressing what fatherhood means to them. It's healthy masculinity.' It's that sentiment that immediately drew Pearson to the latest project from photographer and author Claiborne Swanson Frank, a poignant collection of photographs and interviews with fathers and their children. Father and Child —available from Assouline just in time for Father's Day on June 15th—features more than fifty fathers with their children including Eli Manning, Craig Melvin, Jimmy Chin, Wes Gordon, Tommy Haas, James Van Der Beek, Rashid Johnson, Kevin Love, Tony Romo—and Brunello Cucinelli, with whom the photographer partnered to bring the project to life. The book follows Swanson Frank's Mother and Child , after which she felt it only natural to celebrate fathers all the same. 'As a mother of two boys who adore their father, I felt inspired to document and celebrate modern fatherhood the same way I did motherhood,' she says. 'It is no coincidence that the very first inspiration for this book stems directly from her family, from her dear ones.' Cucinelli also wrote the foreword for the book, in which he talks about the principles of fatherhood and what it means to be a 'good man,' something readers will find celebrated throughout. 'In fact, my babbo—as we call our fathers in my homeland of Umbria—repeated to me throughout my life that I could pursue any path I wished, so long as I never failed to behave as a good man, a decent and honourable individual, towards everybody,' he says. 'This book offered me a precious opportunity to revisit, in some way, the relationship I shared with my father. Within its pages, I found something of universal value, recognisable at every latitude: each son or daughter is called, over the course of their life, to cherish and nurture the invaluable human legacy bequeathed to them by their father.' Cucinelli, both a father and grandfather himself, also reflected on what each of those roles mean to him as he worked with Swanson Frank on this project. 'I would say that this book—among the many thought-provoking insights it offers—invites deep reflection on the value of experience,' he says. 'I have been a son, then a father, and now a grandfather; yet these existential roles remain within me all at once—I cannot, after all, separate them. Perhaps one of the most profound experiences I have come to appreciate is my father's gentleness — a virtue I only truly learned to value with the passing of time.' It was also important for Swanson Frank to celebrate this powerful group of men as not only exemplary fathers but leaders in the worlds of art, sport, design, business, tech, and film to illustrate the connection between leaving a legacy as both a parent and a professional. To fully embrace her subjects' individuality, she worked together with each of them to collaborate on styling and the location of their shoots, and the result is a collection of photographs that are palpably authentic and emotional. For Pearson, that meant shooting him and his son Cooper at their home in California. 'It's always time well spent, when together with any of our kids,' he says. 'The shoot was very relaxed, Brunello's clothes always feel and look elegant and Claiborne is a consummate pro.' Alongside interviews with her subjects, the book also includes an interview between Swanson and her own father, which she says was exceptionally meaningful to undertake. 'I was moved by how deeply he loved his own father and how inspired he was by him,' she says. 'My grandfather was my father's great love and he loved and admired him in such a profound way which in turn shaped his vision of his life and himself.'Above all, Swanson says she hopes this book reflects the meaningful imprint father and child relationships have on families, and on the world – something represented in the through line of all her interviews and photoshoots. 'I hope I conveyed the power of love and family legacy and the reminder that the greatest gift in this life is to love and be loved in return,' she says. The 5 best TV shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day

The 5 best TV shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day Show Caption Hide Caption The surprising origins of Father's Day The very first Father's Day in America was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. unbranded - Lifestyle Get out the grill accessories, the tacky ties and the golf clubs, because Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day. The annual holiday celebrating all things dad is a great day to spend barbecuing, going to a ball game or just hanging out on the couch with the old man, binge-watching a show that has his very same vibes. We're talking science fiction, history, cop shows, spy shows and, of course, Gary Oldman. We're talking shows that celebrate the bond between father and child (or father and adopted alien), shows that celebrate the very best of dads and men everywhere, and shows that contain no awkward moments or mature content that will have you hiding behind your hands in embarrassment. We're talking "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and hours of entertainment that will bring you and your father closer together. Please enjoy our top five picks for shows to watch with your dad this Father's Day, giving him the gift of something you can talk (and argue about) over dinner. If your dad likes 'Star Wars': 'The Mandalorian' "Star Wars" and "dads" go together like blue milk and Luke Skywalker, and have since the first film came out in 1977. The recent group of TV series from Disney's Lucasfilm has also landed squarely in the paternal category, particularly the first and most literal dad show of them all: "The Mandalorian." Pedro Pascal's helmeted galactic warrior is doing dad duty to young Grogu, aka "Baby Yoda," a little green Force-wielding toddler who likes to eat frogs and cause mayhem. A gritty and violent tale about what a father would do to protect his child from a big, bad world, "Mandalorian" is gruff and lovable all at once. It's a genre Pascal is acutely suited to, and can also be seen in his HBO post-apocalyptic zombie series, "The Last of Us" (streaming on Max), albeit with far more gore. How to watch 'The Mandalorian' Seasons 1-3 now streaming on Disney+ If your dad prefers 'Star Trek': 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' If your dad is more "Trekkie" than "rebel scum," it's worth checking out the very best "Trek" series of this century. "Strange" is everything that is good about the franchise spawned by Gene Roddenberry's hopeful 1960s sci-fi series, without the annoying baggage. "Strange" is colorful, joyful, surprising and nostalgic all at once, chronicling the voyages of the Enterprise captained by Chris Pike (Anson Mount) in the years before a certain Captain Kirk came aboard (a young version of James Kirk shows up now and again, played by Paul Wesley). Captain Pike gives off serious dad energy as he leads the crew of the iconic starship through the final frontier. The series includes young and aptly cast versions of Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) as well as likable new characters. How to watch 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Seasons 1-2 now streaming on Paramount+. Season 3 premieres July 17. If your dad is super into World War II history: 'Masters of the Air' Produced by the same team that brought dads HBO's "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific," Apple TV+'s meticulous 2024 epic details the story of airmen diligently fighting in World War II. The slick series, populated with young up-and-comer actors led by Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Anthony Boyle, follows men from the 100th Bomber Group, who flew dangerous raids into enemy territory and were far more likely than infantrymen to be killed or missing in action. The nine-part limited series tells a harrowing and sobering story with a perspective you may not have seen before, even in all those World War II dramas of decades past. How to watch 'Masters of the Air' Now streaming on Apple TV+. If your dad is into spy stuff: 'Slow Horses' Gary Oldman is probably your dad's favorite actor. It's just one of the immutable dad facts, and his skill is on display in this British spy black comedy set in Slough House, where all the disgraced and washed-out spies are sent by the clandestine British service. It's meant to be a place of administrative drudgery with zero action, and yet, led by the affectionately abrasive Jackson Lamb (Oldman), Slough House and its slow horses somehow get involved in some of the most important cases of the moment. Come for Oldman, stay for the rest of the charming cast and the tongue-in-cheek humor. How to watch 'Slow Horses' Seasons 1-4 now streaming on Apple TV+. The series has been renewed for a fifth season, due in September. If your dad likes easy watching: 'Bosch' Amazon Prime Video is known for making an entire subgenre of TV affectionately referred to as "dad shows." They include "Jack Ryan," "Reacher," "Patriot" and the original dad show to out-dad-show them all: "Bosch." Based on the books by Michael Connelly about LAPD detective Harry Bosch (brought to life in glowering glory by Titus Welliver), it features a cop who plays by the rules when they are convenient but follows his own moral code. Welliver's husky, haggard portrayal of the detective has kept the series going for seven seasons (2015-21), and inspired two spinoffs, "Bosch: Legacy" (essentially a sequel) and the upcoming "Ballard" (streaming July 9). How to watch 'Bosch' Seasons 1-7 now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
