Lebanon city ordinance aims to limit liquor stores

Yahoo06-02-2025

LEBANON, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Lebanon City Council will soon decide whether or not to adopt an ordinance that would stop future liquor stores from opening.
On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the council approved the first reading of the ordinance in a 4-2 vote. According to the agenda from Tuesday's meeting, Ordinance No. 25-7149 aims 'to amend Title 8 of the Lebanon Municipal Code relative to the number of liquor stores allowed in the City of Lebanon.'
There are currently 14 liquor stores in Lebanon, and 22 licenses have been given to businesses. According to Ward 3 Councilor Camille Burdine, there is a liquor store every two square miles in the city.
Wilson County sheriff calls out Metro for not having LPRs; 'Fusus' deferred during Metro Council meeting
'I'm sure they would be just as happy in their ward to have another Chick-fil-A or In-N-Out Burger or something like that to bring in those tax dollars versus a liquor store,' Burdine said.
Burdine believes this is not a moral issue; she just wants Lebanon to have more types of businesses than liquor stores. She is also thinking about a vape store ordinance.
Ward 1 Councilor Joey W. Carmack — who was one of two council members who voted against the ordinance Tuesday — sent News 2 a statement saying, in part, 'We're moving too quickly before we understand the impact this might have on sales tax revenues. My vote last night against the ordinance was to slow down and make sure we are making the right decision long term.'

Some local liquor store owners believe there is too much competition in the area.
'There are too many liquor stores in Lebanon, just at the rate that more stores are opening. I never really felt that way before,' Andrea Ross, the owner of Cheers Wine and Liquor, said. 'We know multiple liquor store owners in Lebanon that are great people, great business owners, but in order for us to continue to be able to provide good pricing and all the things that we offer, we have to be able to sustain the business.'

The second reading of the ordinance is set for the next council meeting. If approved, it will go into effect.

Metro Bank shares soar as investors welcome possible takeover approach

Shares in Metro Bank (MTRO.L) have jumped by more than a 10th as investors welcome reports that the high street lender had attracted a takeover approach from a possible buyer. The London-listed bank was approached by investment firm Pollen Street Capital about potentially taking it private, Sky News first reported over the weekend. The discussions are said to be in the early stages and there can be no certainty of any deal. This would mark a turning point for the lender which secured a multimillion-pound rescue deal in 2023 and returned to profitability last year. Shortly after markets opened on Monday, Metro shares were soaring by about 13%. Metro Bank declined to comment on the takeover reports. The bank has emerged from a tumultuous period where it suffered sharp drops in its share price, before receiving a funding package worth £925 million to help secure its future on Britain's high streets. Colombian billionaire Jaime Gilinski Bacal became a majority shareholder in the group after contributing through his firm Spaldy Investments. The lender has made heavy cuts to its cost base, including reducing its workforce by about 30%. It now has about 3,000 employees nationwide. It also scrapped its seven-day-a-week opening hours across its branches – once a central feature of the banking group – which, in 2010, was the first high street bank to launch in the UK in more than 100 years. Metro runs 75 stores in the UK and is opening new branches in Chester and Gateshead in the summer. Cultivating community through hosting events, supporting local businesses

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Every community has groups of people that work to make it the best it can be. Hattie Dewalt serves as the director of the Bellevue Harpeth Chamber of Commerce, which is one of those groups. She told News 2 that she stepped into the role thinking it would be temporary, but three years later, she's still here. Her bread and butter is putting on events. NEWS 2 ON TOUR | PHOTOS: A tour of Germantown's historic architecture 'We do a crawfish boil. We have a picnic,' Dewalt said. 'We have a 'Women of the 'Vue' that meets. We have business before breakfast. We have luncheons.' Each flagship event hosted by the chamber hangs on her office wall. In the center is the biggest event they host: the Bellevue picnic, which happened in mid-May this year. However, events aren't their only focus. The chamber also plays a huge role in supporting the businesses in Bellevue, businesses that have stood the test of time, but also new ones, like Cafe Sperry's. 'We've never had something like this before, like a cute little cafe in this area,' an Employee at Cafe Sperry's, Layla Perkins said. The chamber has dialed in on getting local businesses to come and stay, like Cafe Sperry's, which is about as local as you can get. Most of their products are from the Nashville area. It's not just the products that make local shops unique; employees say they especially love the relationships built. News 2 On Tour | Explore the communities that shape Middle Tennessee 'The regulars — just seeing them flourish in life and hearing their updates like moving, getting engaged, finally having kids or a dog; it's just so much fun,' Amelia Saul, an employee at Cafe Sperry's, said. Dewalt added that they're always looking for ways to improve Bellevue through new businesses, new events and new people. However, as they build, they stay focused on their foundation: 'Advancing the cause of the community and the businesses that are members,' Dewalt said. 'Being able to expose them to a broader audience, to lift them up when things get challenging.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Entire Metrorail system to operate automatically starting this weekend

WASHINGTON () — Starting Sunday, the entire Metrorail system will operate on its (ATO), just six months after launching on the Red Line — and the first full return since 2009. Not only will ATO roll out to the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, but Metro is also returning to the original speed of the system, up to 75 mph, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) . 'This is a major milestone for Metro, and it has been a long time coming. I want to thank the team for their dedication and commitment to making this happen,' said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke. 'This is a win for customers and staff who will experience safer, more reliable rides. Meanwhile, Metro is saving money as ATO is more cost efficient.' PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Metro gets green light to introduce automatic train operations on Yellow, Green lines ATO controls the train's acceleration, deceleration and speed, getting signal and speed commands from equipment located between the tracks. This creates a smoother ride, enhances safety and improves on-time performance, officials said. Train operators will still work in the cab and will be responsible for the safety of passengers. Operators are still responsible for monitoring track conditions and closing the doors when people are safely on board. WMATA added that ATO is not used when there is inclement weather, single tracking or when workers are on the tracks. Metro said there have been no safety issues or red signal violations since ATO was implemented on the Red Line in December last year. Since then, travel times have been reduced by eight minutes. By June 22, Metro will reduce end-to-end times by about three minutes on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. The Yellow and Green lines — which began using ATO in May — will also see decreased travel times of a couple of minutes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
