This is kind of the Packers is what inspired this one, but there's other teams doing this, and this is split backs and busy backfields, you know, a lot of stuff's happening in the backfield in the NFL, and I don't just mean motion, which is a little bit about motion, but who is in the backfield?
It used to just be a running back and then maybe you go full back, maybe you go on 3rd down, you got a running back in the tight end because of pass protection.
Now it's first down, you got two receivers back there.
You got to run back in the receiver.
You got a tight end in the receiver.
And the Packers, I thought, especially once they went through that little Maik Willis, uh, sabbatical when Jordan Love got hurt, it really inspired them to do more with their little spinner series.
They led the league and receive.
runs.
It was mainly Jane Reed, but they're just finding ways to get their talented players touches.

And I think again, I'm talking about creativity with play callers, what coaches do this entire offseason is steal from each other.
when they just review and they go, Oh, that worked really well.
OK, how can we use that for our guys?
And I think teams are gonna watch teams like the Packers.
And others, uh, uh, uh, 49ers, of course, the Samuels, the Rams, always with their jet sweep guys.
um, the Cowboys actually with CD Lamb did some cool things, Chiefs always, and then the Broncos with Marvin Mips did some cool things too, putting him in the backfield as well.
But not just receiver runs, but getting receivers in the backfield.

Two tight ends in the backfield with a running back and making full house backfields.
I saw the Cardinals doing that a good deal.
I see the Bengals doing it a ton.
The Bengals did some really cool stuff with getting the tight end in the backfield and basically being a de facto fullback.
Defenses with the too high with all the quarters and stuff.
They have to read and react and see what you're doing.
If you guys got guys in the backfield, you're changing gaps, and you can change it without doing too much on your own end on offense and being too crazy, just getting these guys in different spots.
So busy backfields.

This is my scheme thing for this year.
Um, also, this is tied into more pistol.
Uh, 2024 featured the highest rate of pistol last year, um, ever, 8.6% league-wide.
They continued to trend from 2023.
That's tied.
Into this because when you're in pistol, you can kind of hybrid the backfield from gun looks and under center looks, and I think we're gonna see even more creativity with that because it's it's working for teams.
It's just a little change up.
You're not gonna major in it, but I do think more teams are gonna start using this changeup throughout the leagues and, uh, it's kind of cool when you see some talented players like Mims and Jareed get touches that aren't just like little 4 yard gains.
It's like first downs and explosive play, so I I I see more creativity happening on the offensive end on this side.

Stefon Diggs' Job With Patriots Could Be In Jeopardy After Disturbing Viral Video: Report

Stefon Diggs' Job With Patriots Could Be In Jeopardy After Disturbing Viral Video: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs' New England Patriots tenure may be over before it even gets started. Advertisement The 31-year-old wideout found himself in hot water after a video emerged on social media of him on a boat surrounded by women in swimsuits passing a bag containing an unknown substance to one of his guests. The Patriots are aware of the video, and the team is reportedly deciding on how to address it with Diggs. 'It's something that we're aware of, and obviously we want to make great decisions on and off the field,' Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters. 'The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions. And any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him and I and the club.' Diggs, a two-time All-Pro selection who signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots in March, hasn't been present at Patriots OTAs, and his future with the team is now in question according to a recent report from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. Advertisement 'I sort of think all things are on the table,' Breer said in a radio interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub. 'And I think it's really, to me at least, it's going to boil down to what [Stefon] told Vrabel and how believable it was, because I think it's going to be hard for anybody — the league's going to look into this and they're going to hit a dead end because they're not going to be able to prove what was in the bag. So, then it's up to the team to make a decision.' Diggs' deal, which included a $12 million signing bonus, comes with $25 million guaranteed. Breer noted if New England has any chance of getting some of that money back for essentially firing Diggs for cause, they have to move swiftly. Former Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at NRG Taormina-Imagn Images 'If the team wants to recoup any of the guaranteed money, they have to cut him right away because you can't hold him on the roster for two weeks and decide, 'OK, we're done with you then,'' Breer continued. 'So, my guess would be the reason he wasn't at practice—and this is purely a guess—might be because [Vrabel] told him to stay away and maybe they're sorting through everything now.' Advertisement Breer also noted that Diggs' behavior is exactly what Vrabel is trying to discourage with the culture shift he's trying to instill in his first year as Patriots head coach. 'This sort of thing can undermine all of that,' Breer added. 'If [Diggs] falls on the sword and does everything right, then fine, but, if [Vrabel] thinks he is lying to him I just wouldn't doubt Mike having the stomach to cut him.' Cole Strange is Falling Behing in Patriots' OTAs

Cole Strange is Falling Behing in Patriots' OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots are taking a serious approach to the 2025 season with competitions lining up on both sides of the ball. Advertisement The offensive line is an area that the Patriots needed to address after last season's latest disastrous performance. New England added some new veterans and used three picks on the offensive line, including drafting former LSU Tigers star Will Campbell with the No. 4 overall pick. While reports are positive for Campbell, there is one former first-round pick of New England who is failing to exceed expectations. Cole Strange has not only not locked up the starting left guard position, but he is reportedly letting other competitors look better for the position. Former New York Jet Wes Schweitzer has had some good looks in OTAs for the Patriots. ESPN reporter Mike Reiss says that Tyrese Robinson has been taking multiple first-team reps in practice. Advertisement This is bad news for Strange, who was the Patriots' first-round pick (No. 29 overall pick) in the 2022 NFL Draft. Strange is in the final year of his rookie contract while the Patriots declined his fifth-year option. He is on the road of being considered as a bust for the Patriots. © David Butler II-Imagn Images In 2022, Strange started and played in all 17 games for the Patriots posting an overall grade of 54.6 by Pro Football Focus. Since then, Strange's career has been derailed by injuries. In 2023, Strange played and started 10 games and only played three games (two starts) last season. There is still a great opportunity for Strange to re-enter the starting lineup. He is, however, off to a poor start if he is allowing a much older veteran in Schweitzer and a player who only played in the regular-season finale last year in Robinson to take his reps. Commanders UDFA Seen As Contender to Make 53-Man Roster

Commanders UDFA Seen As Contender to Make 53-Man Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a division with CeeDee Lamb, A.J. Brown, Malik Nabers, George Pickens and DeVonta Smith, the Washington Commanders know that they have to field a strong secondary to get any chance to be competitive. Advertisement Their defense made major strides in 2024 under coach Dan Quinn. After having the worst unit in 2023, the Commanders secondary ranked third in the league in 2024. Having a better offense certainly helps, but Quinn's work has seen staggering results. Washington isn't done, either. They added Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline last year, and hope that second-round rookie Trey Amos can have an immediate impact as well. There's one more player that Washington may have at their disposal. And he's a UDFA that is turning heads at OTAs. CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso believes that Fentrell Cypress II, the cornerback out of Florida State, has a great chance to make the 53-man roster for the Commanders. Advertisement "Fentrell Cypress II is a man-coverage specialist with the athletic attributes to play that role in the NFL," Trapasso wrote. "While not ridiculously long, the former Florida State star is 6-foot-1 and 181 pounds with 4.43-second speed in the 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical jump and tremendous agility illustrated by his 6.84-second time in the three-cone drill at the Seminole pro day. "Sometimes that natural talent is all a cornerback needs to impress coaches enough to go from undrafted to on the roster in Year 1." If there's a coaching staff who can develop unsure talent in the secondary, it is Quinn. It is what makes Washington such an interesting team going into the 2025 season. ... and made more interesting if a UDFA like Cypress makes the roster.
