Zahid: Over 100 new flight routes approved to prepare for Visit Malaysia 2026
PUTRAJAYA, May 22 — A total of 103 new flight routes, 29 increased flight frequencies and five chartered flights have been approved from various major countries in an effort to boost global connectivity in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the matter was disclosed during the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Tourism and Culture (JKPK), which he chaired here today..
The JKPK chairman said the meeting viewed that a comprehensive campaign approach up to the international level must be implemented with the full support of the government in preparation for VM2026.
Among the outlined strategies include creating demand by empowering the Malaysia Truly Asia and Cuti-Cuti Malaysia brands, joint promotions with airlines and tour operators, as well as market segmentation approaches to attract high-profile visitors from around the world.
'The government is committed to driving the tourism sector as a key catalyst for the country's economic growth in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, particularly the thrust of Rebuilding the Economy.
'This sector not only contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also creates job opportunities and enhances the country's competitiveness in the global market,' Ahmad Zahid said in a statement today.
He said the meeting was informed of seven iconic programmes that will be organised as major attractions for VM2026, namely the Malaysia Mega Sale, Malaysia Cultural Festival, Global Meet, World Tourism Day & Conference, Official Launch of VM2026, VM2026 Year-End Sale, and the VM2026 Countdown Celebration.
In addition, he said the meeting was also briefed on the Sustainable Tourism Programme through the Greening Protocol Initiative.
'Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Selangor government will spearhead the implementation of the Greening Protocol, which encompasses low-carbon technology, green mobility, and the empowerment of urban green spaces. This aligns with the goal of positioning Malaysia as a world-class sustainable tourism destination,' he said.
To ensure the sector remains competitive, Ahmad Zahid urged all ministries and agencies to join forces with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in driving the sector as a national agenda.
'The success of the nation's tourism can only be achieved through coordinated policies and collective, inclusive implementation,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid also called on all frontliners, especially at international entry points, to demonstrate friendliness and professionalism as the country's mini ambassadors in welcoming tourists.
'I am confident that with the joint commitment of all parties, we can make Malaysia a top global tourism destination by VM2026,' he said. — Bernama

In Kelantan, traffic at Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis and Terengganu-Kelantan via Pasir Puteh was reported to be smooth as of 9.30pm, following minor congestion earlier in the evening.

Has Lynas been able to eliminate radioactive waste, asks ex-MP

(AP pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysians must be given a clear update on the results of efforts by Australia's Lynas Rare Earths Ltd to eliminate its radioactive waste before the company can be allowed to expand its operations here, says a former DAP MP. Former Bentong MP Wong Tack criticised the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between Lynas and Kelantan for the future supply of mixed rare-earths carbonate feedstock. He cited the reason given by science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang for the extension of Lynas's operating licence in October 2023, and the lack of updates since then. 'Lynas will extract thorium from their existing radioactive waste. Eventually, there will be no radioactive waste. 'This was the reason given and the promise made by the minister. Can the minister tell us what is the status of this 'experiment'?' he said in a statement. On May 30, Lynas announced that it had signed a non-binding MoU with Kelantan government's investment arm Menteri Besar Inc with a framework to negotiate a deal for the future supply of mixed rare-earths carbonate feedstock. In 2023, Chang had said the extension of Lynas's operating licence until March 2026 was contingent on the company ensuring the radioactive content in water leach purification (WLP) residue was below one becquerel per gramme. Items below 1Bq/g are not considered radioactive waste by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) and do not come under the purview of the Atomic Energy Licensing Act. 'The decision of AELB is based on preliminary laboratory findings indicating that thorium radioactive elements can be extracted from WLP residues, allowing them to be released from legal controls under the AEL Act,' Chang had said. Wong derided Malaysian participation in the deal as being reflective of its politicians' 'mentality of colonisers'. 'Does our wealth in natural resources mean we should flip our entire country over so we can all be millionaires and let our children shoulder the consequences? 'Is this the only way our politicians can think of to build our country's economy: through the exploitation, extraction and destruction of our nation?' he said.

Penang to reassess Indian Muslim housing discount, considers extending offer to all buyers, says CM
GEORGE TOWN, June 8 — The Penang state executive council (MMK) will review the five per cent discount offer for first-time homebuyers from the Indian Muslim community in Penang and make an appropriate decision for the benefit of all parties. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he has directed State Housing and Environment Committee chairman, Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, to refine the policy with developers to extend the discount to all buyers. He said this is to ensure the policy is more inclusive and benefits all segments of society, in line with the principles of social justice. 'The state government has received various feedback regarding the announcement of the intervention measure to provide a five per cent discount to the Indian Muslim community for the purchase of unsold (overhang) property units, as announced by the State Housing and Environment Committee chairman on June 5. 'Some of the feedback and views received suggest that the discount should also be offered to all buyers to stimulate the property sector, particularly the sale of unsold properties or units,' he said in a statement today. On Thursday, Sundarajoo announced a five per cent discount for the Indian Muslim community for the purchase of residential and commercial units under the Madani Inclusive Property Sector Catalyst Policy (MOC). This is among several incentives in the policy, effective from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, in addition to introducing a special category, Rumah MutiaraKu (RMKu) Type D, with a maximum ceiling price of RM400,000, and a reduction in contribution rates for developers who do not physically provide RMKu Type A or B units. The policy is an intervention measure to revitalise the property sector, following discussions and agreement with housing industry stakeholders, taking into account the increasingly concerning oversupply of non-affordable units in Penang. According to the Penang Property Market Report for the Fourth Quarter of 2024, issued by the National Property Information Centre (NAPIC), a total of 2,796 residential units have been identified as unsold, involving various types of residential properties across the state. — Bernama
