Bikers from SA and beyond unite in Mpumalanga for charity
The city came alive with bikers from different provinces and neighbouring countries, who came together for a good cause at Mbombela Stadium on June 14.
The annual event, organised by Sun Riders MCC Rally Club in partnership with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, has, over the years, played a critical role in raising funds for charity, creating much-needed business opportunities and also entertaining people.
Bikers from Southern African Development Community countries such as Lesotho, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and eSwatini as well as from across SA, travelled to Mpumalanga to enjoy this highly anticipated event.
This year, the bikers collaborated with the Gift of the Givers Foundation to hand over blankets, food parcels and other basic necessities to almost 100 beneficiaries, including orphans, rehabilitation centres and senior citizens in need.

The Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, addressed the annual Sun Riders MCC Rally.
'We want all motorcyclists and motorists to return safely to their destinations. We all need to understand that roads are shared spaces. There should be more tolerance and patience among all road users so that we can all be safe,' Macie said.
He acknowledged the economic spin-offs of the rally, noting that most accommodation establishments were fully booked and local restaurants experienced a significant boost in business.

The MEC implored the riders and rally attendees to behave themselves well over the long weekend.

Provincial app flags Derdepoort as area with most potholes The potholes app, monitored by the Department of Roads and Transport, has identified parts of Tshwane with the highest number of potholes reported. According to the department, the PotholeFixGP App, indicates that Derdepoort and Bronkhorstspruit in Tshwane had some of the most pothole reports recently. According to Gauteng MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, 763 potholes were reported in Derdepoort and only 375 were repaired. 'The region has the highest number of potholes on provincial roads on or scheduled for full rehabilitation,' she said. She added that the region has 177 potholes on provincial roads being repaired or yet to be scheduled for repairs. Meanwhile, in Bronkhorstspruit, 57 potholes were reported and 18 repaired. She said the PotholeFixGP App has gained momentum as reports indicate motorists in the province have adopted the tool to report poor road conditions and non-functioning traffic lights in the province. 'This is on the back of strides by the department in attending to maintaining and rehabilitating road infrastructure, particularly potholes, across provincial roads.' According to the MEC, the app was developed to make it easier to digitally report problems with road infrastructure maintenance in Gauteng, including potholes and malfunctioning traffic signals. 'The app uses geographic information system technology, allowing it to pinpoint the exact location of reported maintenance issues and allocate the issue to the correct road authority for repair and maintenance. 'Since its launch in 2022, over 38 790 potholes have been repaired by the department's regional maintenance teams.' Diale-Tlabela said that 2 814 of the 4 000 potholes that were reported along provincial routes through the app had already been fixed, indicating a 72% repair rate. She added that the rest of the potholes are identified and attended to by the maintenance teams. 'This also excludes potholes, over 200, located on provincial roads on or scheduled for full rehabilitation. 'To date, a total of 3 926 potholes have been reported along provincial roads since May 2022, with 892 still pending repair, of which a portion lies on roads awaiting full-scale rehabilitation.' Diale-Tlabela said, although the app was initially developed to report on potholes on Gauteng roads, it has been expanded to include reporting of non-functioning traffic signals. 'It further enables the department to track and monitor progress on addressing reported issues, while providing updates.' She said as of May, the app has seen strong public engagement, with 15 701 downloads on Android, and 3 430 on iOS. The app consists of two interfaces: a mobile app, available for iOS and Android devices, that allows members of the public to report potholes and non-functioning traffic signals, as well as a web application dashboard for the department. 'When reporting a road maintenance issue through the mobile app, real-time data is transmitted, enabling the department to efficiently allocate resources, monitor reported cases and initiate repairs,' she said. Gauteng launches innovative number plates to fight crime

Image: Supplied The Gauteng provincial government this week launched a new high-tech, tamper-proof and crime-fighting number plate system to be piloted over the next six months on its fleet before being publicly rolled out. According to the provincial Roads and Transport Department, the new intelligent number plate system represents a giant leap as it is a secure, traceable, and smart solution, incorporating tamper-evident decals, forensic QR (quick response) codes, and a fully digitised back-end portal. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela officially unveiled the new system on Thursday in Johannesburg. The system's features include the ability to drastically improve the credibility of number plates and to enable license plate tracking within the value chain, from manufacturer to the vehicle owner. Next Stay Close ✕ 'These technological enhancements are designed to combat vehicle theft, fraud, and cloning, while improving road safety and empowering traffic law enforcement across the province,' the department explained this week. For the next six months, the system will be piloted using g-Fleet vehicles affixed with the technologically advanced new number plates as part of the stress testing project before the provincial rollout. 'This system is set to drastically improve the credibility of number plates and to enable license plate tracking within the value chain, from manufacturer to end user (vehicle owner),' stated the department. In addition, it is hoped that the system will also address longstanding challenges in vehicle registration and the law enforcement framework, tackling cloned or fraudulent license plates, lack of interoperability with Southern African Development Community systems, and inadequate data traceability. Lesufi said his administration, assisted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, is now deploying a digital system that ensures the ability to account for every vehicle on the province's roads. He warned that those using fraudulent or duplicate number plates will have no space or time to drive in Gauteng. Diale-Tlabela said the smart number plates will significantly reduce vehicle cloning, trafficking of stolen vehicles, and the use of falsified plates in criminal activities, as well as disrupt criminal networks and improve road safety. The Gauteng provincial legislature's Portfolio Committee on Transport and Logistics welcomed the strategic introduction of the number plates as an intervention towards safer roads.
