NIOSH Calls For Enhanced Water Transport Safety Ahead Of VM 2026
In a statement today, NIOSH said tourism boat operators and handlers must comply with laws and safety standards.
This includes technical requirements under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 and tourism safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
'Various incidents involving water transport, including the capsizing tragedy in Pulau Perhentian that claimed lives and injured several victims on June 28, should serve as a reminder to all parties of the importance of adhering to safety procedures for the wellbeing of passengers, workers and tourism operators,' the statement said.
To this end, the agency expressed its readiness to assist relevant parties in complying with related laws and regulations through safety training, compliance audits and the strengthening of risk management systems.
NIOSH noted that the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022, enforced since June 1 last year, requires employers with five or more workers to appoint an occupational safety and health (OSH) coordinator.
These coordinators are responsible for assisting employers in complying with OSH legislation and implementing OSH programmes in the workplace.
'In this regard, NIOSH also offers the OSH Coordinator course and various other programmes to help operators meet legal requirements, such as basic OSH and first aid training, which also includes water rescue skills.
'In addition, NIOSH offers an internationally recognised management system known as the 'Adventure Tourism Safety Management Systems' or MS ISO 21101:2022.

Key tourism upgrades include a new night experience at the upgraded Johor Zoo and the imminent reopening of eco-tourism sites like Gunung Ledang Waterfall. Nazrul described today's event as the start of a comprehensive, inclusive and impactful promotion to position Johor among Malaysia's top travel destinations. Launched with the Johor Tourism Association, the initiative aims to deploy over 10,000 VJY2026 stickers on public transport and vehicles, including trishaws, motorcycles, cars, tour buses, caravans and e-hailing services. Aerotrain to undergo overnight works for 2 weeks to enhance performance
The new Aerotrain service, which was relaunched on July 1, has transported more than two million passengers, logged more than 1,100 service hours, and completed 18,800 trips, according to MAHB. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : KLIA will be carrying out scheduled overnight works on its Aerotrain system for two weeks beginning on Aug 18 to enhance its performance. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the works will take place daily from midnight to 5am to minimise passenger disruption, Bernama reported. 'During this period, the Aerotrain service will be temporarily unavailable, and airside shuttle buses will be provided to maintain seamless connectivity between the main terminal building and the satellite building,' MAHB said. It advised travellers to follow the airport signage and guidance from on-ground personnel. KLIA managing director Izani Ghani said the maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to fine-tune the system using real-time data since its launch. 'These scheduled works are essential to ensure optimal system responsiveness, safety and long-term reliability,' he said. He said KLIA is also introducing technical upgrades, including a new automatic vehicle wash plant on the Aerotrain track, replacing the previous manual washing method. Since its launch on July 1, the Aerotrain has transported more than two million passengers, logged more than 1,100 service hours, and completed 18,800 trips. It has faced some minor service disruptions recently because of technical glitches and water ponding after heavy rain, but these were resolved without major breakdowns.
