Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe: 7-0 derby win wasn't as important as building fitness

Yahoo11-07-2025
Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe shrugged off a 7-0 Monklands derby win over Albion Rovers and insists the result is irrelevant at this stage of the summer.
A sparkling performance from the Diamonds saw them run riot at New Broomfield, with goals from Lewis McGrattan, Sean McGinty, Craig Ross, Chris Mochrie, Cammy Cooper (2) and Dylan MacDonald.

But McCabe says coming through another game unscathed – following a 2-1 defeat against Welsh side Penybont last week – was m ore important than defeating their neighbours from the Lowland League.
He said: 'At this time of the season the result is irrelevant.
'I was pleased to get boys minutes, to get through the game with no injuries is a big plus, and it was a well worthy exercise, especially in that first half.

'I know [Rovers boss] Sandy Clark really well, and he has a young, energetic side, with a lot of trialist who had a lot to prove, so in terms of the intensity of the game and how it was played I was really pleased.

'We looked to improve on last week, which was our first game back after the summer, after loading the boys' legs, in terms of their fatigue levels, and then building on that again – could we add a bit more quality.
'We knew the fitness has been pretty much drilled into them from pre-season, so I thought there were loads of good things, the young boys came on and kept that freshness really well.'
McCabe added: 'The result, for me, is irrelevant, but I was really happy with the performance levels, energy levels, and everything that we had targeted before the game.

'It's probably a good guide for our young boys, to experience what a match tempo is like and how quickly the ball needs to move, as opposed to academy or in training.

'It was a really good exercise for both teams. Albion Rovers' boys will have sen the level we're operating at, and that's something they're trying to strive towards.
'But in terms of the game itself, it never really felt like a pre-season game,. I've played enough of them in my career where it's a bit slow and lethargic, but I think there was great intensity in the game and for both sides it was a worthy exercise.'
Airdrie have a bounce game against Premiership side St Mirren on Tuesday, and McCabe said: 'Hopefully that will get the boys a little bit sharper than what they were on Saturday, which was really good, and gradually improve every week.'

Panthers premiership hero and two Broncos stars revealed as targets for rival team

Four new names have emerged as top targets of Mal Meninga and the Perth Bears, including a four-time premiership-winner with the Panthers, and two outside backs from the Broncos. It's been well documented that the NRL's newest franchise would love to snare a big fish like Cameron Munster or Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, and Meninga is reportedly preparing a $7.5m deal for Tino. But more players have been revealed to be on the Bears' hit-list. Phil Rothfield has revealed that Scott Sorensen is in Meninga's sights, with the Panthers and New Zealand forward off contract at the end of 2026. Sorensen has won four-straight premierships with Penrith and would add some steel to the Bears' forward pack, in the same way Felise Kaufusi and the Bromwich brothers did when the Dolphins entered the competition. With Sorensen off contract at the end of next season, he'd be free to sign with the Bears for their inaugural season in 2027 as of November 1 this year. Speaking on Triple M radio this week, Brent Read revealed the other names he's heard as being on the Bears' radar. Read named Sharks captain Cameron McInnes, Broncos outside backs Gehamat Shibasaki and Deine Mariner, and Titans gun Jayden Campbell. Shibasaki and Mariner are both off contract at the end of 2026, and the Broncos have a well-documented salary cap squeeze to try and manage. Campbell and McInnes are also without a deal past the 2026 season, and Campbell would be a huge coup for the Perth team. "There's been a lot of talk about Jayden Campbell's future," Read said. "He's got one more year left on his deal and he's raised some obvious concerns - similar concerns that Tino's had about Gold Coast at the moment. If they (the Bears) aren't looking at him they're mad." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Triple M NRL (@triplem_nrl) Phil Gould questions Tino Fa'asuamaleaui money The Titans recently stated that coach Des Hasler will still be around in 2026, despite recent reports he's facing the sack. It's believed the Gold Coast ownership group are trying to provide players like Fa'asuamaleaui and Campbell with some clarity in an attempt to convince them to stay. Last week, Fa'asuamaleaui's manager stated he'll test the open market when he's allowed to do so on November 1. The State of Origin star is on a long-term contract at the Titans, but has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave in 2027. RELATED: Parramatta grand final player announces immediate retirement NRL farce could see Selwyn Cobbo re-sign with Broncos this year It's believed Fa'asuamaleaui is keen to remain on the Gold Coast due to family reasons, but has a close relationship with Meninga and is reportedly set to be offered $1.5m per year to switch clubs. Speaking on the 'Six Tackles with Gus' podcast on Wednesday, Phil Gould questioned whether it's a mis-step to throw that much money at a forward. "If you're going to pay $1.5 million and your marquee player is going to be a front going to be a front-rower who doesn't play 80 minutes every week," Gould said. "You've got to pay someone else to play the rest of the game that he's not going to play. "Then who do you put into the positions that actually influence the scoreboard? He's a great player. He is an outstanding front row forward. But there has to be a limit. If you can't influence the scoreboard, it doesn't matter how rough and tough your front-rower is. So I find that ridiculous."

Simon Goodwin meets with rival AFL club as wife detail could hold key to next move

Former Melbourne Demons coach Simon Goodwin might not be out of a job for long, with reports he's already met with the GWS Giants about a role at the AFL club next year. Goodwin's wife Kristine is based in Sydney for work and it could be a key factor around the future of the former premiership-winning coach, who was shown the door at Melbourne before the final three games of the season. Goodwin's position had been in question after they failed to secure a top-eight finish for a second consecutive year. They also bowed out in straight-sets of the AFL finals the previous two seasons after finishing in the top-four. Goodwin led the Demons to their drought-breaking premiership in 2021, and admitted to AFL 360 on Wednesday night that his axing last week came as a surprise after appearing to have the backing of the Melbourne board. 'It was a shock, there's no doubt about that. I was disappointed that they'd come to that decision — but you accept that position,' Goodwin said. 'Do I 100% think that I was the right person to carry this team forward? Yes, because I've done it before... but that's the decision the board made, and I accept that decision." "There MUST have been more than that?!"Former Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin explains on #AFL360 the one reason he was given for his sacking - and why he thought the Demons weren't far off returning to glory. — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) August 13, 2025 Goodwin said the explanation he got from the board was that the club 'needed a new voice' to take the team forward and no longer felt he was the right man to do so. But the fact Goodwin is a former two-time premiership player with Adelaide and has spent more than a decade in the AFL coaching system, makes him a highly sought-after target for rival clubs looking for experienced people to join their footy departments. RELATED: Erin Phillips breaks silence on 'awful' moment with wife Ken Hinkley responds after Collingwood player linked with Port Sydney Swans champion flags full-time code-switch with NRL club Seven AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed on Wednesday night that GWS have already reached out to Goodwin about a role and says they 'would be able to comfortably afford' him in their footy program after an increase in the AFL's soft cap for next year. Cleary pointed out that a move to Sydney could be enticing for Goodwin because his wife Kristine is based there for business. Simon Goodwin has spoken with GWS over a role for next year. With the increase to the soft cap, the Giants would be able to comfortably afford Goodwin in their football program. He spent recent days in Sydney following his sacking @7NewsMelbourne @7AFL — Mitch Cleary (@cleary_mitch) August 13, 2025 Cleary previously wrote on social media: "Simon Goodwin's wife is based in Sydney. The Swans and Giants will sound out the departing Melbourne coach for a key role in their football departments. Both clubs have previously spoken of the challenges in attracting highly credentialed football people to Sydney." Simon Goodwin 'open-minded' about an AFL return Goodwin confirmed on AFL 360 that would be speaking to a number of different people in Sydney and remains 'open-minded' about a range of possibilities around an AFL return next season. 'I've spent some time up in Sydney, and I'm going to catch up with a whole range of different people,' Goodwin said. 'I'm open-minded to doing anything in football. I love the game, I love coaching. I want to get away, have a spell ... (but) coaching's never complete, you want to get better. And I know with the experience and everything that's I've gone through, with some PD (personal development), I'll come back even better.' Goodwin admits there were 'challenges' at the Demons that his coaching successor will have to address. Among them are the futures of superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver who have both been at the centre of previous trade requests. But Goodwin believes the club is well set up for success for whoever the new coach turns out to be. "If you walk through the doors at training at Casey Fields with those players, the environment's healthy, alive and well ... and that's the biggest part of your program to get right," Goodwin added. "For the next coach, I think it's set up incredibly well. I'd be incredibly excited by the group that they've got available to them.'
