A 24-year-old woman died of a sudden cardiac arrest while competing in a CrossFit competition in held in 96F heat in Mexico.
Nayeli Clemente was taking part in the Cholula Games, a CrossFit licensed event in San Andras Cholula in the south east of the country on May 2.
But during the 'Team Pyramid Run' - a grueling relay-style race where teammates take turns running increasingly longer distances before working back down - Clemente began to find it hard to breathe and fainted.
The fitness enthusiast had to be given emergency CPR by a doctor in the crowd, who was able to briefly stabilize her before an ambulance arrived.
However, she died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Officials later clarified that she had reportedly suffered a sudden heart attack.
While officials are yet to clarify what caused a cardiac arrest, it can be assumed she died due to performing intense exercises in high temperatures.
According to the local press, spectators have claimed that the medical team at the event was slow to respond to Clemente's condition.
Paramedics were allegedly encountered issues when deploying a stretcher and an oxygenation device reportedly was not connected when it was needed.
Some witnesses have also claimed that there were not enough paramedics on site to cover the event - which has led to backlash against organizers of the event.
However, they soon assured people in a statement that they maintained close contact with the family of the young woman.
They said: 'During the main event of the Cholula Games, an athlete developed a medical complication.
'She was treated by the event's medical team and transported alive to a private hospital, where she sadly died the following day.
'The Cholula Games has been in constant communication with the athlete's family since the incident.
'We remain in contact with them to provide them with all the support they need during this difficult time.'
Doctors are warning that working out in excessive heat can increase your risks of a cardiac arrest.
Heat-caused stress to the body can force the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart to work harder to pump blood to the surface of the skin for cooling.
This can lead to to dehydration and electrolyte loss, which can disrupt heart function and raise the risk of death.
Dr Hugh Shoff with UofL Health Emergency Medicine told WDRB: 'If your body is not able to cool itself down, what ends up happening is your organs can't function as well.
'So you start evaporating a lot of water out of your system, then you become dehydrated to where your body can't pump as much fluid and that ends up injuring the organs.'
According to a 2010 study, 95F is considered the upper limit for human survival, beyond which the body cannot effectively cool itself through sweating and becomes susceptible to a cardiac arrest.
Over 350,000 Americans experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital every year. It typically affects adults, but it can happen in children, too.
Pyramid runs are known to push runners to their limits in terms of endurance and speed due to their structured pattern of running and resting.
However, this exercise can be demanding on the cardiovascular system and muscles - leading to fatigue, excessive sweating as well as damage to your organs.
According to Dr Emil Hodzovic, a Pittsburgh-based doctor and health coach, fitness enthusiasts, whether new or seasoned should not perform intense exercises such as Crossfit during a heatwave.
He said: 'If you experience lightheadedness, hot or red skin, blurry vision, extreme fatigue, weakness, an excessive heart rate or vomiting, then rest in the shade and rehydrate.
'If symptoms persist consult a medical professional. This is not the time for "no pain no gain".'
Additionally, if you are exercising during intense heat, Dr Hodzovic recommends consuming an electrolyte drink before and after your session to make up for lost fluids.
'Hydrate above and beyond what you expect you'll need. Sweat needs to be replaced and you'll lose litres an hour, far more than you can absorb by drinking,' he added.

Canada men's national team manager Jesse Marsch believes that three players he called up from the Vancouver Whitecaps were poisoned in their trip to Mexico last weekend. The Whitecaps traveled to Mexico City to take part in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final, losing 5-0 to Cruz Azul. On Wednesday, the club cancelled a training session after a 'significant number' of players and staff members began suffering gastrointestinal issues. In a statement (via The Athletic) the club said, 'As a precautionary measure, and in consultation with the club's medical team, as well as the local infectious disease consultant and Vancouver Coastal Health, the club cancelled training on Wednesday and held a modified individual closed session for cleared players today.' Three Whitecaps players - Sam Adekugbe, Ali Ahmed, and Jayden Nelson - were called up the Canadian national team for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. Prior to a friendly tournament against Ukraine, Marsch spoke to reporters following an event with the Canada Ukraine Foundation to blast CONCACAF for its inaction and making accusations - admitting he had no proof. 'It's, for me, appalling that this is the second year in a row that CONCACAF and the powers that be have allowed an MLS tea to go down to Mexico for a big final and get poisoned,' Marsch said. 'It's ridiculous. Something has to be done to protect these environments.' Last season, the Columbus Crew played in the final of the same tournament - traveling to Mexico to take on Pachuca. Pachuca won 3-0. Following that game, Columbus manager Wilfried Nancy reported that multiple members of the first team and the coaching staff were suffering from food poisioning. General manager Tim Bezbatchenko suggested the team may be a victim of 'subterfuge'. The Whitecaps attempted to mitigate these circumstances from happening to them by hiring their own chef, however the issues occurred anyway. Marsch continued, telling reporters: 'Look, in the past when you would go down there, I remember being with the U.S. national team and club teams going down to Mexico, it was 'will the fire alarm be pulled in the middle of the night? Will there be dancing and singing?' And those are somewhat spirited, competitive advantages that are created when you go down to Mexico. But poisoning the team is another version.' 'Look I don't have any proof here that this (occurred) but it's not random. It's not random that two years in a row this has happened. 'If I were the Vancouver Whitecaps, if I were the Columbus Crew, if I were MLS, I would be absolutely angry that this has been allowed to happen. 'When all three of (Adekugbe, Ahmed, and Nelson) are sick, it's clear. It wasn't just 'Ah, I don't feel so great'. There was talk of whether it was an infectious virus but in the end, I don't want to speak but I think the results are that it was food poisoning.' Adekugbe, Ahmed, and Nelson all participated in training sessions with the Canadian national team on Friday morning. However, Marsch says their recent ailments have led to him re-considering who starts against Ukraine on Saturday. 'We weren't planning to but when the Vancouver guys got poisoned, that changed the plan. They all feel good today, but they're all different. They're not at 100 percent like they would be,' Marsch said. 'You don't run into two years in a final and a bout of MLS teams getting food poisoning for a final. I get it why (players) can't say anything, they're not sure, and I'm not sure either. But this is too much of a coincidence.' After the fixture against Ukraine, Canada will play Cote d'Ivoire in another friendly on Tuesday evening. From there, they travel to the west coast for the start of the Gold Cup - which has them in Group B. They open the tournament against Honduras in Vancouver before traveling to Houston to face Curacao and El Salvador. Under Marsch, Canada has continued its strong form in CONCACAF competitions. Earlier this year, Marsch's men defeated the United States to finish third in the CONCACAF Nations League.

MARTEL MAXWELL: Dundee 'weight-loss wave' has me tempted by shortcuts

As summer approaches and holidays are planned, it is not unusual to notice a friend – or maybe two – looking fabulous. You do a double take when you see them – they look younger, fresher and thinner. The kind of dramatic weight loss that is transformative. Middle-age spread, pot belly, and puffy face gone. But here's the thing. And it's quite a thing. I'm double taking all the time. Give me any gathering of people in Dundee – school pick-up, kids' football match or a night out – and it's like a Slimming World magazine. Many will have found that oft elusive motivation to shed pounds (we all know how it works), to eat less and move more. Others – and not just the ones who admit to it – will have taken the short cut of injecting the new, increasingly-prominent, weight-loss drugs which suppress appetite and work to shift excess fat. More power to both camps – no judgement. But it's getting a bit Twilighty. It's like body snatchers are sneaking down to Dundee as night falls, replacing the lumpy and bumpy with Instagram-edited version of themselves – all flat stomachs and cheekbones. Regular readers of my column will know I've touched on this before, including last year when I discussed the Ozempic boom. I told you about a friend who admitted she was on the weight-loss jabs. She all but tapped her nose as we looked around the ladies' charity lunch we were at and said: 'Mark my words, women here are on it.' She told me she'd developed a sixth sense in telling who was on the medication. My friend was brilliantly honest, explaining how she paid for the jabs and how she couldn't shift the middle-aged spread which had taken her from a size 10 to 14. No clothes fitted and it was getting her down. She quickly lost a stone with the jabs but also admitted they affected her mood and made her a bit sick for the first few weeks. Another friend who's gone from a size 16 to 10 says she has had no side effects. She has more energy and claims the jabs took away her desire to drink as much alcohol, which was becoming a daily few glasses of wine after work. Fast forward eight months and sudden transformations are everywhere. I have also noticed an increase in people committing to sport, which is great. One friend is wild swimming twice a week while another is running ultra marathons. And one has even started her own CrossFit business – PeaceFit in Wormit. Many mutual friends attend her classes and look awesome – stronger, fitter and toned. I've noticed couples losing weight together. Going back to the jabs, I suppose it's too easy for the muffin tops like me to point a finger and say everyone's on them. But who wouldn't want a quick fix? A stone down for summer? The reintroduction of a bikini following a decade of covering up after kids and – if I'm entirely honest – dieting and sporadic exercise interspersed with occasional gluttony… I'm tempted myself. However, if something seems too good to be true, maybe, just maybe, it is. The jury is still out, with research pointing to the possibility of health complications involved with the jabs. This can be counter-argued with the fact obesity can cause diabetes, heart problems and cancer. Shifting weight if you're over 40 has the magical plus of shifting a few years in appearance too – puffy faces and pot bellies begone. Some of the people I'm seeing seem to have had a magical elixir of youth. If I sound envious, I probably am. The £60 pills that will give England an edge at the World Cup

Of all the items handed out to England players this week – from match shirts to personalised legacy number caps to training bibs – they can be sure that there is one which the Football Association staff will not be asking them to give back. The biometric pills swallowed by Thomas Tuchel's squad on their training camp in Girona, as part of the heat acclimatisation project, have been common in many other sports for the past decade. Football, however, has been a relatively late adopter. For a World Cup next summer in the heat of the United States and Mexico they are now considered a crucial part of preparation. The pills are passed out of the body naturally. While they are inside an athlete, they send information on a radio frequency that can be read in real time by sports scientists. The pills beam the data to a 'gateway' – most commonly a wristband – which uploads it immediately to 'the cloud' from where the data is accessible. It can show a player's core and surface temperature, his heart-rate and many other crucial metrics. Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer both explained how, at England's camp, they had been tested to exhaustion in heat chambers while their body's reaction was measured via the pills. The players were asked to cycle for 45 ­minutes at a consistent level inside the heat tent. Palmer said: 'It was tough. It was 35C, 36C inside the tents and we had to get to a certain watts [level] on the bike and maintain it. For 45 minutes.' The England squad had practised heat acclimatisation in the build-up to the 2022 tournament in Qatar but never went as far as the biometric pills. They allow sports scientists to measure a player's reaction to extreme heat and tailor preparation accordingly. It was never clear to those outside the England camp why Gareth Southgate was not prepared to take that step. Scheduling may have played a role, and the greenhouse-effect chambers required may also have contravened Covid restrictions still in place in Qatar. Before that World Cup, England players trained at temperatures of 32C, in particular before the first game against Iran. Now the squad appear to have taken the next step. Biometric tablets have been used in endurance sports for years. In addition, athletics, rugby and motor racing are among sports that regularly test players this way. Military forces around the world do so when training personnel. They pills are also used for some oil workers in demanding conditions in the Middle East. Although the tablets are unusual, footballers generally need little time to reject the alternative ways of measuring body heat in extreme conditions: a probe down the throat or introduced rectally. 'We make it clear that athletes are not to retrieve the pills' Dr Lee Taylor, of the sports science school at Loughborough University, an expert in athletic performance in the heat, has used the biometric – or telemetric – pills with athletes at the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships and rugby's World Sevens. He says that they have been relatively less used in football because a player cannot have an MRI scan having taken the pill, and footballers tend to be scanned more than any other athlete. 'Using them in a training environment is lower risk than that,' he says. 'The players would be doing minimal contact either side of the heat acclimation sessions. It is very simple tech that has been around for quite a while. They are very accurate. They allow us to store more data than we actually need so you can sample body temperature between five and 30 seconds, and the download time is really quick. We can get a measure of core body temperature during activity.' The pills, which cost around £60 each, will start to work effectively around six hours after they are taken. They are passed naturally and not retrieved although Dr Taylor says there have been a handful of athletes – typically the bloody-minded types in endurance – who have been known to retrieve them if they do not feel enough data has been extracted. 'We do make it very clear to them,' Dr Taylor points out, 'that they are not to retrieve them'. During the Tokyo Olympics of 2020, Dr Taylor was able to monitor real-time data from athletes via the biometric tablets. 'They [Tuchel and staff] will do technical and tactical work in a temperate environment,' Dr Taylor says, 'so they are not stressing the players too much and then they will give them passive or semi-active heat exposures. I imagine they are getting the players to a specific core temperature, they stop exercising and then when their core temperature drops they exercise a little bit more.' Dr Taylor says that elite athletes grasp the benefits very quickly. These are not pills designed to enhance performance; instead they measure it more accurately than ever before. 'You need a scientist who has good soft skills in talking to the athlete,' he says. 'To get the laboratory gold standard practices out on to the pitch you need to build a rapport with the girls or the guys. That's the most powerful thing we do. We would chat to the senior leaders in the team and say, 'You have struggled with the heat previously so we want to give you the best preparation to express your physical capacity and technical ability'. It allows us to individualise training as we would recovery. The pills themselves are a very low risk procedure.'
