Male nursing officers in Telangana demand equal promotion opportunities

The Hindu2 days ago
The Telangana Nurses Joint Action Committee (TNJAC) has urged the State government to remove barriers preventing male nursing officers from securing promotions, calling the existing rules discriminatory and in violation of constitutional provisions ensuring equality.
In a statement issued on Sunday (August 10), the committee said that while male candidates were permitted to enrol in government nursing colleges nearly two decades ago, they continue to face career stagnation due to outdated government orders.
The issue dates back to 2005, when the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy convinced the Indian Nursing Council to allow men into nursing courses, leading to the issuance of G.O. No. 82 on May 8, 2005. A year later, under G.O. No. 320, nursing schools were upgraded to colleges, paving the way for male admissions in all government nursing institutions.
Since 2011, around 1,000 to 1,200 male nurses have been serving in government posts. The TNJAC pointed out that in 2024, no male candidates were included in the seniority list for lecturer promotions, forcing some to seek judicial intervention.
The neighbouring State of Andhra Pradesh has already acted on this directive. Through G.O. No. 47, issued on March 14, 2024, the State amended its Nursing Service Rules by replacing the phrase 'only women' with 'men and women', ensuring that male candidates could also benefit from promotions. The TNJAC has appealed to the Telangana government to follow suit to align with constitutional provisions.

Income Tax Bill 2025: From UPS benefits to commuted pension rules — top 5 things every pensioner must know

The Lok Sabha passed the revised Income Tax (No. 2) Bill, 2025 on Monday, August 11, a move towards replacing the six-decade-old Income Tax Act of 1961. Introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament, the bill aims to streamline and modernise the country's tax framework. It will now move to the Rajya Sabha and, upon securing Presidential assent, become law. Out of the several provisions mentioned under the proposed bill, some key measures are specifically aimed at pensioners. Here are the top 5 takeaways for pensioners — The revised bill incorporates the tax relief for Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) subscribers. As per the bill, a subscriber to the Unified Pension Scheme under the National Pension System (NPS) will receive a tax-free amount up to 60% of the total pension corpus at retirement, whether due to superannuation (regular retirement), voluntary retirement, or certain types of early retirement. This tax-free benefit applies only if the retirement payout follows the conditions set out in a government notification issued on January 24, 2025. Notably, these tax benefits are already available to NPS subscribers. The bill proposes a tax benefit for 'retirement benefit accounts", where the income from such accounts maintained in a notified country will be exempt from taxes. Under the revised Income Tax Bill, 2025, the entire amount of a commuted pension is now eligible for a full tax deduction. Previously, only salaried employees could avail of a complete tax exemption on commuted pensions. But now, everyone who has invested in an approved pension scheme will receive tax relief. The proposed law clarifies the tax applicability for partial withdrawals from pension schemes before maturity, which seeks to provide clarity and minimise disputes over the taxation rules regarding early withdrawals. The bill maintains the same deduction for family pensions, where either one-third of the pension or ₹ 15,000, whichever is lower, is deducted from taxable income. The number of chapters have been trimmed to 23 from 47 and the number of Sections has been cut to 536 from 819. The new Bill has also increased the number of tables to 57 from 18 and the number of formulae to 46 from six.

Parliament Monsoon Session 2025 Live: Opposition continues 'vote chori' protest on last day of session

Parliament Session Day 17 Live Updates: Both Houses of Parliament entered their last day on Tuesday for the monsoon session. As the parliament reconvened, the Opposition leaders continued their protest against the voter list manipulation. Yesterday, the Lok Sabha passed four key bills: the Income-Tax (No. 2) Bill, 2025; the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the National Sports Governance Bill; and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, amid continued opposition protests. The Opposition MPs were not present during the same as they were detained during a protest march from Parliament House to the Election Commission, which was stopped midway. "The farmer cannot even recover the cost of production for his crops... The government talks about doubling the crop production and the income of farmers. The farmers are suffering losses and committing suicides... We demand an MSP for onions," says Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant. (Source: ANI) Along with voter list manipulation, the opposition also protested, demanding a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for onions in order to support farmers. Several MPs were seen wearing garlands made of onion as a symbol of protest. Protesting MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi, were seen wearing T-shirts featuring Minta Devi, a voter allegedly listed as 124 years old in the Election Commission's voter list. Before adjournment, the Rajya Sabha adopted the motion moved by Minister Piyush Goyal to elect one member from amongst the Members of the House to be a member of the Tea Board, Coffee Board and Spices Board. The Rajya Sabha proceedings have been adjourned till 2pm today. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 12 pm today. "Opposition has the right to protest against any issue, but it must be within the limits of law... As far as SIR is concerned, it is a welcoming step. They (opposition) are hindering the House proceedings just to mislead people for their political gain," says BJP MP Damodar Agarwal on the SIR row. As the monsoon session entered its last day, the Opposition leaders continued their protest outside the Parliament against voter list manipulation. Top INDIA bloc leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, led the protest against the Bihar voter list.
