McLaren boss says Formula One is a ‘healthier' place without Christian Horner

Horner was released from his position on July 9. The last 18 months of his reign were overshadowed by an accusation from a female colleague of 'coercive behaviour'. Horner always denied the claim and was twice exonerated.
The 51-year-old has been replaced by Laurent Mekies and Brown revealed he had met with the Frenchman ahead of Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
'I'm happy Laurent's in the role he is in,' said Brown. 'I like Laurent, that'll be healthy, and maybe we can get back to focusing on competition on the track.
'There's always going to be some political aspects to the sport, but I think it is going to be healthier with Laurent. I'm a fan of Laurent, I have known him for a long time, and it'll be good to go racing against him.'
Brown and Horner did not get along and aimed a number of slights at each other over the years – both on and off the track.
Brown continued: 'It went too far. There's always going to be politicking in F1; let's try and shut down their flexi-wings and that stuff, but when you start getting into frivolous allegations, that's just going too far.
'If I look up and down pit lane now, I see us fighting each other hard politically, but the line is not being crossed, and that line got crossed before.
'So I think that we'll see a little bit of a change for the better. There's a higher level of trust that now if we sit down and have a conversation on a topic where we think there could be some confidentiality, and it's just not an automatic: 'I'm going to use that as a political weapon'.
'We're going to be in a better place, a little bit more unified, and a little bit more trusting that while we're fighting on track, we can have a conversation about what's good for the sport off it. And that won't get manipulated for political reasons and taken out of context.'
Horner led Red Bull to 14 world championships in two decades in charge and Brown, whose McLaren team lead both the drivers' and constructors' championships as the sport approaches its summer break, concluded: 'I presume he'll be back. He's young, he's a racer, and he's got pretty awesome credentials.
'But I'm looking forward to racing Red Bull, more like we race Ferrari and Mercedes and being more collegiate, because it's important for the benefit of the sport that we all can work together.'

Florian Wirtz talks up early connection with new Liverpool teammate

Both men have only signed for Liverpool this summer but Florian Wirtz is already sounding optimistic about his connection with new teammate Hugo Ekitike. The Premier League champions have spent big this summer, with Wirtz and Ekitike arriving from Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively. The Reds are strengthening from a position of strength after such an impressive last season, with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez also arriving. Their pre-season friendlies are now at an end, with the Community Shield against Crystal Palace coming up on Saturday and Wirtz is already enjoying life playing with Ekitike. Both arriving from the Bundesliga, the German knew of the Frenchman and is excited to link up with him regularly this season. 'He is a really good player. I enjoyed watching him at Frankfurt and I was really happy that he decided to come to us,' Wirtz told The Times of the 23-year-old. 'In the training sessions already, he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good. I am really happy that I can play with him. 'It is good that we have a few players that come at the same time, so we can connect a little bit and talk to each other about how we deal with it. That helps when you come to a new team.' Ekitike and Wirtz started in the second of Liverpool's two games against Athletic Club on Monday which the Reds won 3-2 and will both hope to be starting at Wembley on Saturday. The Frenchman recognised that there is work to be done on the relationship with his new teammates but is already enjoying life on Merseyside. 'Obviously I am here now for more than one week so I'm still trying to find connections with the others in the last passes and even before,' he said. 'I enjoy playing with them, outside of the pitch they are good guys also. So, I take pleasure to play with them. Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen – £29.5m Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen – £100m Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth – £40m Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia – £25m Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt – £69m 'We have some little things to fix to get better. Even me with the ball, I knew I could do better today. But I really enjoy playing with them and I'm sure we're going to make really good things this season.' Ekitike is coming in to play up front with Wirtz behind the front line, but the Germany international says that you can expect to see him popping up all over the place. More Trending 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch, and the manager gives it to me,' said Wirtz. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this. 'I came [to Liverpool] because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going. I'm really enjoying the first weeks.' There could still be more new arrivals at Liverpool this summer, with the club remaining interested in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. If Isak does arrive in a huge deal, where Ekitike will fit into Slot's plans will be thrown into doubt. Scott Brown says Ayr will heed Championship warning and sets sights on home comforts

The manager is looking for his Ayr side to set the right tone when Raith visit town this Saturday. Scott Brown insists Ayr can heed their Championship warning with a quick return to form. ‌ United made a slow start at Arbroath on Friday night, in which they laboured for much of the league curtain raiser. ‌ Brown admits Ayr will need to up their game dramatically to be at the sharp end this season - but says the opening day draw has focused minds on what's required. ‌ He told the Ayrshire Post: 'We know how difficult this league can be from one week to the next. Friday night just proved that. 'The thing that frustrated me the most was how we fell into the trap of going long to our two strikers all night. 'We needed to show more composure on the ball and I hoped that getting the early goal would have allowed us to kick on.' ‌ Ayr have a chance to set the tone on home soil when they welcome Raith this Saturday. United were strong at Somerset last season and Brown wants more of the same this time. He said: 'We'll look to use the surface to our advantage and get it down and play. We've got good footballers in the team and we need to make the most of them.' Meanwhile, Brown has acknowledged the ongoing miss that is skipper Ben Dempsey, who has been sidelined since the end of last season with a knee injury. ‌ United's influential captain has seen a specialist in a bid to cure the problem and will not be rushed back as he bids to return. Brown said: "Ben is the captain of the club and a massive player for us. So not having him around is a blow. He sets the tempo for everyone and was tremendous for us last season. 'The priority has been getting him back in with us and we're building him up from there. We're starting to see progress on that now." ‌ Kevin Holt underwent a small operation on his groin last week but is not expected to miss much game time. Stuart Bannigan is back in training following an interrupted pre-season, with Brown keen to see what he adds to the squad. The boss said: 'It's been frustrating for Banzo as he's had a couple of niggles and missed a lot of the work. So that's put him behind. 'But when he does come back in he'll add that bit of experience in there.' Anton Dowds is continuing his long road back from injury but United won't rush the striker, who ruptured his ACL last September. United want to add a defender from Celtic as part of the co-op deal rubber stamped last week. Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar have already made the move from Parkhead.
