Cold-blooded NYC killer who gunned down childhood friend in ‘evil act' learns her fate as victim's family tears into her: ‘No remorse'
A cold-blooded killer who gunned down her childhood friend on a crowded Brooklyn street has shown 'no remorse' in the years since the shocking slaying — and the motive remains a mystery even as she was sentenced on Monday.
Claudia Banton, 46, deserved to rot in prison for the 'evil act,' victim Delia Johnson's grieving relatives said in Brooklyn Supreme Court before the convicted murderer was slapped with a 23-year-to-life prison sentence.
'It's an act of pure evil and what makes it even more painful is that she showed no remorse for what she did,' Johnson's brother, Mathis Lemons, 51, told Justice Margaret Martin at the hearing, urging the judge to throw the book at Banton.

'My sister's killer should never see the world again,' Lemons said.
Banton showed no emotion as Johnson's family expressed shock that the woman they once took into their home had turned out to be their kin's killer.

'I saw you as family at one point in my life,' Johnson's daughter, Ladeya Jenkins, 21, told Banton.
'To say this hurt, I cannot even say that. That's putting it lightly.'
Johnson's sister, Khadijah Berry, 31, echoed the heartrending sentiment.
'You and her were friends… but what broke my heart is knowing you did it and knowing how you did it to my sister,' she said.

Banton was convicted last month of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for the gruesome execution-style killing, which took place outside another friend's funeral on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights on Aug. 4, 2021.
Banton and Johnson were former friends, but no information about the killer's motive came out over the course of her trial.
Authorities said Banton blasted the 42-year-old mom at least five times in front of shocked mourners, sending them running for cover.

'The first shot wasn't enough for this defendant,' Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Michael Diamond told the court during the sentencing.
'She stepped over and pulled the trigger again and again as people ran for their lives.'
4 Delia Johnson's slaying was captured on surveillance footage.
Chilling police bodycam video shown during the trial captured a wounded Johnson bleeding out from her eyes as she lay face-up gasping for air.
Her slaying was also caught on surveillance footage.
Police stopped Banton in her white Mercedes moments after the shooting, but she was let go after witnesses claimed the shooter was a man.
Banton spoke to police like 'nothing happened' when she was pulled over, the prosecutor said.

Three months later, US Marshals tracked Banton down in Jacksonville, Fla. after she changed her appearance — including by wearing a blonde wig — and deleted her social media.
It remains a mystery why Banton killed her former friend, whose family let her live with them multiple times.
'The first time I saw you with chains on, it broke me,' Johnson's mom, Delia Berry, recalled inside the courtroom as she shook with emotion and held photos of her beaming daughter.

Eight years after a woman was found dead behind a local church, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says her alleged killer is behind bars in the Duval County jail. JSO spotlighted the arrest this week, which brings the case closer to an end. Officials say 39-year-old Rose Greene was found dead on Soutel Drive behind Master's Touch Ministry in June 2017. Percy Johnson, a local registered sex offender with sexual offenses dating back 30 years, was officially charged with Greene's murder in November 2024. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Greene's daughter, Catherine, said she searched for answers for years, even reaching out to a local Jacksonville social media influencer to spread the news about her mother's cold case. 'We didn't know who did it, so God put it in my heart to just reach out to Chelle,' Catherine said. Chelle Gman is a Jacksonville native who uses her Facebook page to highlight unsolved cases in the community. Catherine and Gman believe the local influencer's Facebook reach of over 25,000 followers may have lead to the arrest. 'A little information here… a piece there… can put together a whole puzzle and you never know who knows what until you ask,' Gman said. While Catherine says she has some closure knowing that someone is finally being held responsible, she says Johnson should have never been on the streets. Action News Jax found records dating back to 1996 of Johnson's arrests in St. Johns and Duval counties. The records show charges of sexual battery, kidnapping, and other similar offenses between 1996 and 2022. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officials say they are working with the State Attorney's Office in this case. Johnson is pleading not guilty. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Update: 2 men in custody after suspected explosive device found in Grand Forks County traffic stop
Jun. 11—REYNOLDS, N.D. — Two people have been arrested on suspicion of possession of explosives after a suspected explosive device was found during a traffic stop in Grand Forks County. Driver Gabriel Patrick Messmer, 41, and passenger Christopher Ryan Ringsrud-Knowles, 42, both of Fargo, were taken into custody shortly after noon Wednesday, June 11, and are being held in the Grand Forks County Correctional Center, according to jail documents. Neither appears to have been formally charged in district court as of Wednesday evening. Southbound Interstate 29 was closed from about 10:55 a.m. to 1 p.m. between Thompson and Reynolds after a North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper found what was believed to be an explosive device in a passenger vehicle during a traffic stop, according to a press release from the NDHP. The vehicle, a 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL2, had been stopped at about 8:40 a.m. due to illegal window tint when the trooper, based on probable cause, searched the vehicle and found the device. The Grand Forks Bomb Squad, made up of personnel from the Grand Forks Sheriff's Office, Grand Forks Police Department and UND Police Department, was contacted and responded to the scene, followed by the road closure for public safety. At about 12:10 p.m., the device was safely detonated on site, the release said. The bomb squad then used an X-ray screening and other search methods to deem the vehicle cleared. Evidence was then collected. The investigation remains ongoing. The Thompson Police Department, Reynolds Fire and Altru Ambulance were also involved during the incident.
