Flanagan read 'every comment' after Cork incident
Flanagan came under scrutiny for appearing to strike Niall O'Leary with his hurl in the 1-16-all draw after footage of the incident was posted on social media.
The incident was missed by match officials and the 28-year-old avoided a ban from the GAA but Flanagan was kept on the sidelines after he was sanctioned internally.
"It was one moment in my career that I regret," Flanagan said on the GAA Social podcast.
"It was a lapse in judgement. We've all been in the heat of battle and said something or done something we shouldn't."
Flanagan said he read every comment on social media about the incident after fan footage went viral, and said that he "let the team down".
"The aftermath on social media, I looked at every piece of it. I looked at every comment, with people calling me and that.
"You're saying 'if I just didn't lift the hurley, would my season have gone differently?'.
"It was probably the start of my downfall for the season. Other players came in and done really well, and I maybe lost touch with management because of it.
"I wouldn't class myself as a dirty player, but it was a big regret for me."
Flanagan added that he feels inside forwards aren't protected by officials and that played a role in the incident.
"There's so much off the ball that you have no control over.
"You're getting verbal abuse, physical abuse. I'm well able to give it, but it's one of the moments in my career that I regret the most.

Wiffen eighth in 800m final at World Championships
Olympic 800m freestyle champion Daniel Wiffen could not defend his world title as he finished eighth in the final in Singapore. Wiffen, from Northern Ireland, started brightly and led after 300 metres, but was soon reeled in and faded as the race progressed. Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi took the gold medal with a time of 7:36.88, ahead of the German pair of Sven Schwartz and Lukas Martens. Wiffen finished last with a time of 7:58.56 after fading badly in the second half of the race. He had spoken about being diagnosed with a bout of appendicitis in the build-up to the Worlds, and although he avoided surgery, he said he felt "really weak" after scraping through to the final as the last qualifier in his his semi-final. A year to the day since his Olympic triumph, Ireland swimmer Wiffen came out of the blocks fast and led the race after the opening 100 metres, when he was on world record pace from the outside lane. He maintained his advantage at the 300m mark, but was soon caught and passed by Jaouadi, Schwatrz, Martens and his American Olympic rival Bobby Finke. The 24-year-old continued to fall away as Jaouardi stretched his margin out front, and Wiffen would eventually come home in eighth place - some 22 seconds behind the Tunisian. Jaouadi's time was the third-fastest ever in the discipline after a blistering final 400m. Despite a disappointing defence of his 800m crown, Wiffen will try to reclaim his 1500m freestyle title when the heats start on Saturday.

Murder of mother and children has shaken community to its core, service told
The murder of a mother and her two children in Co Fermanagh has shaken the community 'to its core', mourners have heard. A service of removal has taken place in Maguiresbridge for Vanessa Whyte and her children James Rutledge, 14, and Sara Rutledge, 13, ahead of their funeral in Co Clare on Saturday. The three family members died in a shooting incident at a property in Drummeer Road in the Co Fermanagh village a week ago. Agricultural contractor Ian Rutledge, 43, who died on Monday, is understood to be the only suspect in the shooting of his family. Last week, police said a triple murder and attempted suicide was a line of inquiry. Mourners gathered at St Mary's Church in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday morning, with several dressed in bright colours following a request from the family. Large crowds lined the streets outside the church in advance of the service. During the service, a reading was delivered by Elizabeth Armstrong, principal of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School, were Sara and James were pupils. In his homily, Father Raymond Donnelly said people had gathered in a church 'filled with grief'. He added: 'There is a heaviness in the air, a silence within our hearts, that speaks volumes. 'The tragedy we have endured has shaken this community, and our country, to its core. 'We are left shocked, grieving, heartbroken, searching for meaning, grappling with questions too deep for words.' He added: 'The loss of Vanessa and her two beautiful children, James and Sara – lives taken in such an unspeakable way – is more than any heart should bear. 'A woman full of kindness and warmth, a friend to so many here. 'And her children, so young, so vibrant, so full of promise. 'Their laughter rang through school corridors, through playing fields, especially on the GAA pitch, where they thrived with passion and joy. 'That zest for life, their infectious energy, their open smiles. 'Words fail us. And when words fail, we turn to the word of God.' The priest told the grieving family members 'you are not alone'. He added: 'We stand with you. 'We hold you in prayer and embrace. We do not have answers, but we offer presence. We offer prayer. We offer love. 'To the classmates of Sara and James and to all the friends, know that it is OK to feel confused, angry, sad and to cry. 'Please speak to someone. Speak to your parents, to your teachers, to your clergy.' Fr Donnelly told mourners that grief is 'not something to carry alone'. He added: 'It is a journey we make together. 'To all involved in sport – to coaches, teammates, mentors – thank you for the joy you helped nurture in these children. 'Their bright spirits will remain a part of every game played in their memory. 'And we take a moment to thank all first responders and medics. Thank you for your service under unimaginable circumstances. 'Thank you to all who have come forward with meals, hugs, tears, prayers, practical and pastoral support or a silent presence. 'You remind us that light still flickers, even on the darkest of days.' Candles were then lit in memory of the three victims. The bodies will be taken to Barefield in Co Clare, where Ms Whyte was originally from, ahead of their funeral Mass on Saturday. The three will then be buried together in Templemaley Cemetery.

Sale hooker McElroy signs new deal
Sale Sharks hooker Tadgh McElroy has signed a new one-year deal. The 27-year-old Irishman joined the Premiership side on a short-term deal last October and made 24 appearances in all competitions last season. "I think this club is the perfect place for me to keep developing my game," he told the Sharks website. "I want to work on my set-piece and my defence and Byron [McGuigan] and the rest of the coaches at Sale have been brilliant to work with."
