ESPN shares player comps for top Iowa women's basketball recruiting targets
Coming off a year in which the Hawkeyes found their way back to the NCAA Tournament and notched a win, head coach Jan Jensen is continuing to reload the roster with high-level talent from the recruiting ranks. Iowa has transformed itself into a national player in the women's college basketball recruiting world and is now among the favorites for the nation's best.
Kate Harping
The first of the two top prospects discussed was 5-foot-10 guard Kate Harping, who attends Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia.
In her junior year, Harping averaged a staggering 32.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 5.1 steals, 3.7 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, leading the War Eagles (29-3) to the Class AAAA state semifinals.
According to the article, ESPN compared Harping to Florida State's senior guard Ta'Niya Latson based on her aggressiveness off the dribble and physicality at the rim that translates to superior scoring, rebounding, facilitating, and 3-point shooting marksmanship.
Harpring is as aggressive as it gets off the dribble. Combine that with her physicality at the rim, and she looks a lot like Latson. Both score, rebound, facilitate and are respectable 3-point shooters.
Latson led the nation in scoring last year with 25.2 points per game and has already eclipsed 2,000 career points in college. She had a reputation early as a player who attacks the rim hard, then rounded out her game by adding shooting range. She also averaged more than four assists and steals rebounds per game last season. Both players create easy offense by forcing turnovers via their defense ball pressure. Harpring is a capable shooter-she averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the 3SSB league-but prefers drives and pull-ups, so her natural evolution will come from beyond the 3-point line, much like Latson. - Shane Laflin, ESPN
Harper is considered a five-star and ranked No. 1 prospect in the state, No. 1 in the point guard position, and No. 1 overall recruit in the 2026 class, according to 247Sports' 2026 Top Women's Basketball rankings.
Given her top ranking, Harping holds 11 additional offers outside of Iowa, including some of the game's legacy programs, such as UConn, LSU, South Carolina, and Notre Dame.
McKenna Woliczko
The second of the two Hawkeyes recruits discussed by ESPN was McKenna Woliczko, who currently attends Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif.
The five-star, 6-foot-2 wing is ranked as the No. 6 player nationally by ESPN, On3, and 247Sports. According to 247Sports, Woliczko is the country's No. 2 power forward and the No. 2 player from California. On3 rates Woliczko as the nation's top shooting guard and as the No. 2 player from California.
Despite an ACL injury ending her junior season, Woliczko has put up impressive numbers during her prep career, averaging 20.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game during her freshman season and 22 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game with Archbishop Mitty during her sophomore campaign.
Regarding the article, ESPN compares Woliczko to Baylor's senior guard Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, highlighting her ability to play bigger than her size, aggressiveness on the glass, and confidence extending out to the mid-range, as well as her potential to improve her 3-point efficiency.
Although Woliczko has missed some time due to injury since the high school season, her effort and motor have left major impressions among recruiters. Both she and Littlepage-Buggs (6-1) play bigger than their listed size, as they attack the glass and refuse blockouts by defenders. They're also nice shooters out to the extended mid-range, and are working to improve from deep.
But the prevailing similarity between these two players is their effort and willingness to do whatever it takes to win. Littlepage-Buggs averaged 15 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this season for the Bears. Woliczko was a double-double machine in high school as well, prior to injury. - Shane Laflin, ESPN
Regarding her recruitment, she named Iowa, Ohio State, South Carolina, and USC among the final four choices on June 12. She also scheduled her official visit to Iowa City over Labor Day weekend.
While the two Iowa women's basketball prospects named amongst the 10 premier recruits named in the article will generate significant attention from competing schools, it is clear that the Hawkeyes are not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the nation's elite programs.

Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever hold serve in ESPN WNBA power rankings after All-Star break
The second half of the WNBA season is upon us, and the Indiana Fever are looking to rattle off some wins to reclaim their spot among the league's best teams with a chance to make a deep postseason run. Unfortunately, Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark is being held out of their first action back from the All-Star break due to injury as she tries to recover for the stretch run. Without Clark, the Fever have been able to stay afloat, battling to a 12-11 record overall, which is not the most indicative of the talent lining their roster. Despite that, the Fever are holding serve in the most recent WNBA Power Rankings from ESPN, coming in at No. 4. 4. Indiana Fever (12-11) Previous ranking: 4 Next seven days: @ NY (July 22), vs. LV (July 24), @ CHI (July 27) How much of the season's second half will be able to play? She has been ruled out for Tuesday, which will mark the 11th regular-season game she's missed this year. She was also sidelined for the Commissioner's Cup final on July 1 and the All-Star Game. She is only 23 with many years ahead, so if her groin injury requires significant rest, it's possible the Fever could take a conservative approach and sit her indefinitely. - Michael Voepel, ESPN Caitlin Clark will miss the Indiana Fever's game against the New York Liberty tonight, July 22. Her next chance at a return comes on Thursday, July 24, when the Fever host the Las Vegas Aces. Should the Fever be extremely cautious with Caitlin Clark, her first action could be this upcoming weekend on July 27 when the Fever head to Chicago to take on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. Kirk Herbstreit: Play-in games may be right fix for College Football Playoff
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz spoke with the ESPN college football analyst about the suggestion from Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz that creating play-in games for automatic bids to the playoff may be the right solution moving forward. View more Video Transcript So I'm not sure in the short term how to get the Big Ten and the SEC to play nice in the sandbox together. Maybe they don't have to, but you've seen all of the playoff proposals. What do you think of what the Big Ten wants to do now with automatic qualifiers for their conference? I like, I like what Eli Drinkwitz came out and said against his own conference and, saying that why don't we have more play and opportunities. You know, can you imagine instead of that last Saturday this season being just the SEC or Big 10 or Big 12 or ACC championship. Imagine if the SEC had 1 and 2, but then you also have 3 and 6 and 4 and 5 playing each other. And imagine if we had the excitement of 3 and 6, winner of that game is in the playoff. 4 and 5, the winner of that game is in the playoff. I think that is fascinating, and he was very passionate in the way he described that. I would be a fan of that personally. And give these teams hope, as opposed to, you know, just the two teams that play in the conference championship have a shot to get that automatic spot, and then you're hoping for at large after that. I love the idea of a kind of a play-in weekend, throughout the entire country. I think that would create a ton of buzz for the players, and for the fans. It's fun debate, it's subjective, it creates a lot of passion. But I think it really, if you go back to the play-in model that I'm suggesting, it takes away some of the pressure of just a committee selecting these teams, and it gives the actual players a chance to set on the field by giving them that if they qualify, a play-in game, and then you have no one to blame. Hey, you were in, you had the play-in game, you lost, so you have no one to blame. You can't blame the committee. You know, you lost a football game, so you're not going. So I think that would be the right way to go personally. Close

The player Lakers plan to waive after Marcus Smart deal
The post The player Lakers plan to waive after Marcus Smart deal appeared first on ClutchPoints. On Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers made a free agency splash by signing guard Marcus Smart to a contract shortly after his buyout with the Washington Wizards. Smart gives the Lakers the point of attack defender that they desperately needed as well as some veteran leadership and toughness. In order to bring in Smart, the Lakers will need to make space elsewhere on their roster, and recently, NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN–who reported the Smart news–broke down the move Los Angeles may be forced to make in order to clear that space. 'The Lakers plan to waive guard Shake Milton to create the roster spot to sign Smart, sources told ESPN. Milton's $3 million contract for next season would have become fully guaranteed Sunday,' reported Charania on The Lakers are reportedly still evaluating their options, per ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel, and could end up trying to trade Milton on Sunday, but at this point, waiving seems to be the most likely course of action. Milton was brought to the Lakers midway through last season when the team traded D'Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets. Milton saw occasional minutes under head coach JJ Redick but never made a huge impact during his time with the Lakers. Still, he'll likely have suitors now that he is a free agent. A big move for the Lakers At this point, it's unclear how JJ Redick plans to utilize Smart in the Lakers' lineup. One option would be to start him alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, giving the Lakers a much-needed perimeter defender in a backcourt that is otherwise the worst defensively in the NBA. Los Angeles could also opt to bring Smart off the bench to help solidify that unit, which doesn't have a ton of depth at the current juncture. Whatever direction Redick chooses to go in, the Lakers certainly got better on Saturday, adding a player in Smart who has plenty of playoff experience and has also dramatically improved his perimeter jumper throughout the course of his career. It will certainly take some getting used to to see Smart, who has spent the majority of his career wearing Boston Celtics green, now in the Purple & Gold. However, Los Angeles fans have to be excited about the news.
