With their doom-laden take on electric blues, Black Sabbath turned the world of heavy music upside down when they released their debut album 55 years ago, in February 1970. A 1964 Gibson SG propelled Tony Iommi's instantly recognizable guitar sound, but if it weren't for a bad pickup and a risky gear swap, the band's change-making album might have sounded very different.
Iommi had a few misfortunes to thank for his title as the inventor of heavy metal. He'd lost the ends of several fingers on his fretting hand in an industrial accident when he was 17, requiring that he devise leather thimbles to cover his damaged finger tips. .
He then had a brief, unsuccessful run in Jethro Tull, after which Iommi returned to Sabbath with a fresh drive and greater work ethic. But as the band went in to record their debut album, Iommi found his Fender Stratocaster — which he can be seen as he plays with Tull on the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus — was having some issues. It was especially bad luck because, as Iommi tells Gibson TV, he'd worked hard to make the guitar suitable for his damaged digits.
'I worked on it myself to try and get it right for me to play, because I couldn't just pick up a guitar like you'd be able to pick up and play,' he tells his interviewer, Judas Priest's Richie Faulkner. 'I couldn't use heavy strings anymore. I had to change everything — change the fretting and lower the strings — because I was using the thimbles. i couldn't feel the strings."
His backup guitar was a right-handed Gibson SG that the left-handed guitarist had strung upside down. As luck would have it he was able to swap it for a proper left-handed model shortly before recording began.
'I heard of this bloke that had a left-handed guitar, and he was right-handed, and he played that upside down,' Iommi says. 'Really peculiar! So I got in touch with him, and I arranged to meet him in a car park.
"It was a bit dodgy,' he adds. 'He might have nicked it!'
Although Iommi intended the SG to be nothing more than a backup guitar, it quickly became his main guitar when the Strat developed a problem with one of its pickups.
'I recorded 'Wicked World' with the Strat, and then the pickup went,' he recalls. 'So, I thought, I've got to use the other guitar. It was the first time I'd ever really played it, and I thought, Here I am, doing an album on a guitar I've never played before!'
Yet, something about the SG won him over. 'I never went back after that. I've stuck with the SG ever since.'
Asked why the Strat was abandoned rather than repaired, Iommi says, "as far as I knew, it was buggered. In those days, you couldn't just go and buy a pickup. I could have taken the front pickup out and put it in, but I never thought of that."
Besides, he says, 'as soon as I started using the SG, and that was on the album, that was it. I swapped my Strat for a sax. I had this mad idea of trying to play the sax, which I drove everybody up the wall with.
Iommi is set for one last Black Sabbath show this summer, having recently spoken to Guitar Player about why 'Iron Man' is the Sabbath song he relates to the most.

Hammerhead shark falls from sky in South Carolina, interrupting disc golf game

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A hammerhead shark recently crashed down on Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While waterspouts can pull fish from the sea and drop them over land, the culprit was a more common fish foe: an osprey (Pandion haliaetus) that had lost its lunch. The unusual event took place on May 18 near the 11th hole of the wooded course near the ocean. "It's not uncommon to see an osprey carrying something, but you take note because it's still really cool to see," Jonathan Marlowe, who witnessed the hammerhead fall as he was playing disc golf, told Garden & Gun magazine. "I thought it would be a random fish." Instead, it was a small, dead hammerhead shark, easily identifiable by its wide, mallet-shaped cranial structure known as a cephalofoil. Also known as "fish hawks," ospreys are excellent aquatic hunters and the only raptors with feet designed to catch slippery prey. But they tend to feed on fish less than 12 inches (30 centimeters) long, and the hammerhead found on the golf course appears to be longer than a foot. Related: Sharks: Facts about some of the ocean's top predators It's likely the osprey carried the fish at least half a mile (800 meters) from the ocean before losing its grip. Marlowe said two crows chased the osprey into a tree, where it dropped the hammerhead onto the ground below. Crows and other smaller birds are known to use a technique called mobbing to protect their territories during breeding season by teaming up to ward off predators. According to posts on the Myrtle Beach Disc Golf Facebook page, wildlife such as snakes, raccoons, and alligators are common sights on local courses. But seeing a shark in the woods might just be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "We couldn't believe it and kept asking ourselves, 'did that really just happen?'" Marlowe said, who left the hammerhead behind in the hopes that the raptor might return and make a meal out of it. A survey by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources that ran from 2013 to 2016 detected three types of hammerheads — bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo), scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), and great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) — in coastal waters off South Carolina and Georgia. And in 2013, a new, rare species was discovered in the same area. Named the Carolina hammerhead (Sphyrna gilbert), the fish look a lot like scalloped hammerheads but are genetically different. It is unclear which of these species fell from the sky in Myrtle Beach.

Sydney Sweeney Turned Her Bathwater Into Soap, And She 100% Explained Why She Did It: 'When Your Fans Start Asking For Your Bathwater...'

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Sydney Sweeney is one of the biggest actresses working in Hollywood at the moment, and it seems she has the world's attention whether she's starring in an OutRun movie or on a safari vacation. There are even some so obsessed with her they'd buy her bathwater, and it turns out Dr. Squatch will soon let them do exactly that. Sweeney has been a spokesperson for Dr. Squatch for some time now, and has led some viral ad campaigns encouraging men to care about natural homemade soap rather than personal care products with more chemicals. For their latest collab, the company has developed "Sydney's Bathwater Bliss," a soap infused with water the actress bathed in. The actress, who has long had to deal with comments about her body from fans and producers critiquing her looks, has leaned into the bit by explaining why she'd agree to this unique promotion: When your fans start asking for your bathwater, you can either ignore it, or turn it into a bar of Dr. Squatch soap. It's weird in the best way, and I love that we created something that's not just unforgettable, it actually smells incredible and delivers like every other Dr. Squatch product I love. Hopefully, this helps guys wake up to the realities of conventional personal care products and pushes them towards natural. For those curious about the bath water and where it was sourced from, CinemaBlend learned it apparently came from this viral ad Sydney Sweeney participated in back in 2024. Check out the ad below, which I suppose began the long process of transforming those suds into a soap product readers will soon be able to own: Yes, this is real, and it'll be arriving sooner than Euphoria Season 3. The soap, which is infused with douglas fir, exfoliating sand, pine bark extract, and other things that didn't come in contact with Sydney Sweeney, will be limited to 5000 bars. Beginning May 29th through June 5th, Dr. Squatch will hold a contest on Instagram allowing 100 U.S. participants to get a free bar of the soap. More On Sydney Sweeney Sydney Sweeney Knows Anyone But You Got Negative Reviews From Critics. But I Appreciate Her Take Those looking to buy won't be able to until June 6th, and it'll only be available until all 5000 bars are gone. That said, like the odds of an Anyone But You sequel, I would imagine things that stay in demand stand a good chance of getting a follow-up, so I wouldn't be surprised if the actress takes another dip if the ad campaign gets a ton of attention. If nothing else, one can't help but wonder if this truly bizarre product line will be something we look back on when remembering 2025 and wonder what we were thinking. Or, Sydney Sweeney's advocacy for more natural personal care products sparks a worldwide movement that forever alters the beauty industry as we know it. Only time will tell! Keep an eye out for Sydney's Bathwater Bliss when it goes on sale on June 6th. I'm sure it'll sell fast, so be sure to check out Dr. Squatch's social media to enter for a chance to win that contest.
