Spain's King Makes Nadal a Marquis

Asharq Al-Awsat19-06-2025
Spain's King Felipe VI on Thursday granted tennis great Rafa Nadal the noble title of marquis, recognizing his contribution to the nation through sporting prowess, according to a royal household statement.
Nadal, a 22-times Grand Slam champion who retired last year, was among six individuals honored as part of celebrations marking the monarch's 10th anniversary on the throne, Reuters reported.
Other given such titles included pop-rock singer Luz Casal and Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales.
"They are a source of pride for Spain and a permanent reference point for values that should inspire our society," the palace said.
Former world number one Nadal, 39, will hold the title Marquis of Llevant de Mallorca, the island where he was born and lives. The title can be inherited by his descendants.
Nadal, who won the French Open a record 14 times, was commemorated last month at Roland Garros with a permanent footprint on the Center Court.

Raphinha and Yamal score as Barcelona start La Liga title defense beating 9-man Mallorca

MADRID: Barcelona began the defense of their La Liga title with a comfortable 3-0 win at Mallorca, scoring early and taking advantage of two first-half red cards for the hosts on Saturday. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, who led Barcelona's prolific attack last season, needed only seven minutes to impress again. Yamal's curling cross found Raphinha by the far post and the Brazil forward headed in from close range. Ferran Torres' shot from outside the area in the 23rd was a goal that drew complaints by Mallorca because one of their players was on the ground after being hit by the ball in the head in the buildup. Some Mallorca players stopped playing after teammate Antonio Raíllo went down, but the referee allowed play to continue. Mallorca immediately complained after Ferran scored. 'The ball hit my head and I got dizzy. I tried to get up and I couldn't. The referee should have stopped the game,' Raíllo said. 'After that, everything was harder and the game got out of control.' Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he understood why Mallorca were upset with how the goal developed. 'Maybe I would not be happy,' Flick said. 'But in the end I always say to my team, 'Until the referee stops the match you have to continue.'' Raíllo noted that Torres said he shot the ball only because he thought the game was stopping. Mallorca coach Jagoba Arrasate said it should be protocol to immediately stop play if someone gets hit in the head like what happened to Raíllo. 'The fourth official told the referee to stop the game, I don't know why he didn't,' Arrasate said. 'Then there were the red cards, and there was no more match after that. With nine players it was impossible.' The hosts went a man down 10 minutes later when Manu Morlanes was sent off for a second yellow card for fouling Yamal on the run. His first yellow was for protesting Barcelona's second goal. The second red card in the 39th came from Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi hitting the head of Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García with his left foot while reaching up for a high ball. The referee changed the card from yellow to red after a video review. Yamal made it 3-0 in second half stoppage time by hitting the top corner. Barcelona, who won the league last season after scoring 102 goals, were without veteran striker Robert Lewandowski because of an injury. Newly signed forward Marcus Rashford went in as a substitute in the 69th. New Barcelona goalkeeper Garcia didn't have to work much in his Barcelona debut after being signed in the offseason in a transfer from city rival Espanyol. Regular starting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is out after undergoing lower back surgery, and Garcia started ahead of Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña, who replaced Ter Stegen last season. Also debuting for Barcelona was 18-year-old defender Jofre Torrents. Other results Valencia were held to 1-1 by visiting Real Sociedad, with Diego Lopez putting the home team ahead in the 53rd and Takefusa Kubo equalizing for Sociedad three minutes later. Alaves opened with a 2-1 home victory over promoted Levante thanks to Nahuel Tenaglia's stoppage-time winner. On Friday, Rayo Vallecano won at Girona 3-1 and Villarreal defeated promoted Oviedo 2-0. Atletico Madrid are at Espanyol on Sunday, while Real Madrid host s Osasuna on Tuesday.

Sabalenka stunned by Rybakina in Cincinnati, Alcaraz into semifinal

CINCINNATI: Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka was dismantled 6-1 6-4 on Friday by Elena Rybakina who powered into her first Cincinnati Open semifinal with a display of clinical serving. The Kazakh ninth seed delivered a brilliant performance to secure her seventh career win over a top-ranked player and set up a blockbuster clash with Poland's Iga Swiatek in a showdown of Wimbledon champions. Rybakina fired 11 aces throughout the match, earning an impressive 81 percent of points on her first serve, while saving all five break points she faced as she secured her fifth win over Sabalenka in 12 meetings. 'I'm happy with the serve. It was the key,' former world number three Rybakina said. 'We're both big hitters. Today I served really well. If Aryna serves well, it's completely different. Hopefully I continue like this.' Earlier, third seed Swiatek advanced to her first WTA 1000 semifinal in 15 months, beating Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6-4. Kalinskaya, who had defeated Swiatek in their only previous meeting, put up a spirited fight by saving four match points, before the six-times Grand Slam winner converted her fifth opportunity on serve to seal the victory. 'I just played my game,' Swiatek said. 'For sure, it wasn't easy. Just happy I was solid and had the intensity to apply pressure.' Veronika Kudermetova breezed past Varvara Gracheva 6-1 6-2 to reach her first Cincinnati semifinal. The Russian seems to be back to the form that once carried her into the Top 10, earning her first WTA 1000 last-four spot since 2023. She will next face either second seed Coco Gauff or seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini in the semis. In the men's draw, second seed Carlos Alcaraz survived a three-set battle against Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev, claiming a 6-3 4-6 7-5 win to reach the last four. The Spaniard was far from his best, committing 15 unforced errors and three double faults in the decider, but capitalizing on his lone match point, courtesy of a Rublev double fault, to secure his 15th consecutive Masters 1000 win. 'Playing someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, it can cost you the set or the match. I just stayed strong mentally and that's what I'm most proud of,' Alcaraz said. 'It's just accepting the moment, accepting that I am playing a third set, that it's going to be a really tough battle, and I love that,' he added after setting up a showdown with either third seed Alex Zverev or American fifth seed Ben Shelton. Five-times Grand Slam champion Alcaraz, winner of 37 of his last 39 matches, advanced to his 12th Masters 1000 semi, equalling the mark of Italian top seed Jannik Sinner, who faces Frenchman Terence Atmane in the other last-four clash.
