The first signs of spring arriving in Cumbria have been captured ahead of the official start of meteorological spring on Saturday, March 1.
Eagled eyed members of the News and Star's Camera Club have been out and about across Cumbria to snap pictures of those first signs of spring breaking through.

After suffering through the dark winter months, we are rapidly gaining around four minutes of sunlight every day as daylight hours continue to grow.

These seasons are split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar, making it easier for meteorological observing and forecasting to compare seasonal and monthly statistics. By the meteorological calendar, spring will always start on March 1 and will end on May 31.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hits northern Chile, with no reports of casualties

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Friday, causing minor infrastructure damage and cutting power to over 20,000 people. Authorities have not reported any casualties following the tremor. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake hit at 1:15 p.m. local time (5:15 p.m. GMT) at a depth of 76 kilometers (47 miles). Its epicenter was located near the coast of the Atacama Desert. While the quake was felt across several communities in the expansive Atacama Desert region, initial reports confirmed no immediate casualties. Chile's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service said the earthquake's characteristics did not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami along the South American coast. Miguel Ortiz, deputy director of Chile's national disaster response service, Senapred, said the powerful earthquake caused 'minor' infrastructure damage and power disruptions, leaving nearly 23,000 people without electricity. 'Some minor landslides have been recorded, which are being monitored and coordinated with the municipalities,' he said. Ortiz also noted 'some minor landslides,' which are being monitored and coordinated with local municipalities. Chilean President Gabriel Boric, said on X his government was in communication with the regional presidential delegate, and confirmed there were 'no reported casualties.' ____ Follow AP's coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at

Ryanair flight makes emergency landing in Germany after turbulence

Eight people were injured when a Ryanair plane suffered heavy turbulence caused by severe storms in southern Germany, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Bavaria, local police said on Thursday. The plane, carrying 179 passengers and six crew members, was en route from Berlin to Milan on Wednesday evening when it experienced violent turbulence, which led to eight passengers and one crew member being injured, according to the statement. The plane then made an unscheduled landing at Memmingen airport at 20:44 pm (1844 GMT), some 100 kilometres west of Munich, to allow for the injured to receive medical care. Three people were brought to hospital due to the severity of their injuries, including a two-year-old child who sustained bruises. As local authorities did not authorize the aircraft to continue, Ryanair organized buses to transport passengers to their destination overnight, police said. A replacement flight was organized on Thursday morning. Ryanair has so far not responded to a request for comment. The storms also caused damage to residential areas in the region, with the winds lifting the roofs off several houses in the city of Ulm, according to the fire brigade.

Massive plume of ash, gas spews from Italy's Mount Etna

A huge plume of ash, gas and rock spewed forth Monday from Italy's Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, after a portion of its southeastern crater likely collapsed, authorities said. Images showed a massive grey cloud billow forth from the volcano on the island of Sicily, beginning about 11:24 am local time (0924 GMT), according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Surveillance cameras showed "a pyroclastic flow probably produced by a collapse of material from the northern flank of the Southeast Crater", the agency said. A pyroclastic flow occurs when volcanic rock, ash and hot gasses surge from volcanos. They are extremely dangerous. The explosive activity "had transitioned to a lava fountain", INGV said, with the plume of ash expected to dissipate towards the southwest. A red alert issued for aviation authorities said the height of the volcanic cloud was estimated at 6.5 kilometres (more than four miles). The nearby Catania airport was still in operation. ams/jhb
