Kolkata: Work to make the Orange and Yellow lines meet below the city airport has started. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is implementing the 29 km New Garia-Airport corridor (also called the city's Orange Metro line), has barricaded a portion of the airport-bound flank of the airport access road for construction of the Orange line's diaphragm or D-wall.
This is the spot where the "Welcome to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport" signboard was mounted all this time. The signage has been shifted back, closer to the airport. Cars headed towards the airport have to curve along the barricade to make way for construction to join the two Metro lines at the airport or Jai Hind Metro station. The D-wall is the retaining wall constructed below the ground by excavating a trench and filling it with reinforced concrete.
It is a prerequisite for building tunnels to create a watertight barrier. The construction is being done in cut-and-cover method. Therefore, a stretch of the airport-bound flank has been dug up.
The Yellow line or the 16 km Noapara-Barasat corridor, too, enters the airport along this particular stretch. The Yellow line's Phase 1, covering 7 km from Noapara to Jai Hind (airport) stations, is almost complete, awaiting inspection by the safety appraiser or the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) for approval for revenue operations.

On the other hand, construction of the Orange line's last 900 m underground leg till the airport is underway, so this corridor can reach its terminal airport station.
The under-construction D-wall on the eastern side will fortify the Orange line's tunnels from one side while the already built D-wall of the Yellow line will be used as the eastern boundary.

TOI on June 10 had reported that "Orange, Yellow Lines set to meet 400 m ahead of airport station," and work was set to commence on the convergence of the New Garia-Airport Orange line's Up and Down tracks alongside those of the Yellow line.
RVNL has blocked a 9 m by 7.4 m section of the airport-bound flank. Following permission from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), it has shifted utilities passing below the airport-bound flank. Cars going toward the airport have to curve along the area cordoned off for the D-wall construction, to reach Gate No. 1. Traffic flow is unhindered so far. "Two rows of cars are passing through most of the airport-bound stretch.
The entire Kolkata-bound flank is accommodate two vehicular rows," an official said.
RVNL had to tweak the access roads design to ensure the smooth traffic flow. From June 6-8, the agency took a three-day traffic block on the airport-bound access road to dismantle the median divider that separated the two flanks. It also shifted a portion of the airport-bound flank to the other one that leads traffic from the airport to the city. Thereafter, each flank that comprised three lanes was temporarily reduced to two lanes.
The site at the airport-bound flank was recently handed over to RVNL so it could execute the seamless convergence of the twin lines into the tunnel leading to the airport station.

Mainline operations refer to flights run directly by United using its aircraft and crew, including Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777, and 787 jets, along with Airbus A319 and A320 models, reports Fox News. "Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports," the airline stated. "We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations." In a recent update, the airlines stated that their systems are being restored, but delays are expected to continue throughout Wednesday night. So far, 827 flights have been delayed and 23 have been cancelled. The airlines have confirmed that it is not a cyberattack, reported ABC News. The ground stop does not impact United Express flights, and any flights already in the air will continue to their destinations as planned, as per the airlines.
